How hard is nursing school?

Nursing school is meant to kick your ass. Even when there are areas of study that are not conceptually difficult, nursing instructors will load you down with work to make sure you have examined ALL the nursing implications. One of my fellow students in nursing school said, “I don’t need to be the best. I’m perfectly fine with having a C average. I just want to get through nursing school.” I have no idea what her gradepoint average really was, but she was the only person in my class who didn’t pass her nursing boards. A C average in nursing school indicates somebody who doesn’t care or isn’t qualified to be an RN.Once you graduate, you will literally have the lives of people in your hands. In USA hospitals, physicians spend an average of maybe 10 minutes a day with each patient (although in a teaching hospital they likely spend a little longer discussing the patient, but not much; also, in intensive care units, physicians spend more time with patients. I’ve read that in an ICU, the physician averages about 30 minutes a day with each patient). So you, as the RN, have near-total responsibility for the patient 23+ hours per day. You need to listen carefully to the previous shift’s report, to your patient, and to your patient’s family. You need to be able to quickly evaluate your patient and determine when he/she is deteriorating and what appropriate interventions may be. You need to know when you need to call in other professionals for help with a patient, including physicians. Many non-healthcare people think that physicians issue orders and nurses follow them. It doesn’t really work like that. Nurses are the eyes and ears of the physician, and while RNs don’t write orders, we do request orders when we see changes in our patients. Many of the orders that physicians write are in response to what we, the RNs, tell them.In other words, nursing school HAS to kick your ass. Your instructors know this. Expect to work really hard. If you go into nursing just for a steady job and steady income, God forgive you.Edited to add: As of 6/5/18, Quora has blocked my posts from most feeds due to a controversial post I wrote on that day that started to go viral (1300 views within about an hour then views for ALL my posts suddenly slowed to a trickle). Is it demeaning to be a male nurse?

My answer is a resounding NO.I am a recent graduate of a diploma program. In our class of 28, I was one of 5 males. While gender did cross my mind as a potential obstacle, I have yet to run into any in real life. There will always be some patients who want to be taken care of by a nurse of the same gender, but most of the time; it doesn't really matter. As nurses, we take a comprehensive role to meet the needs of the patients - so it's just a matter of accommodating them. I've had a few patients apologize for asking to switch to a female, but I encourage them and support them speaking up about it. I make it a point to VISIBLY not take it personally, and still offer a spirit of helping.Becoming a nurse, regardless of gender, means that you become part of the rich history of people who took making a difference in the lives of others to incredible limits. We deal with people at their most vulnerable points in their lives, and work to take care of all of their needs to get them back to where they were before. Our training gives us the ability to integrate the anatomy, physiology, gender, culture, social, economic, developmental, nutritional, medicinal, spiritual, familial and psychological dimensions and create personalized treatment for each patient. With each step along the way, we interact with patients and their families. We have front row seats to seeing people's lives put back together, treat them, teach them how to heal themselves, educate them about their medicines, advocate for them with other disciplines, see life brought into the world, and - unfortunately - see life pass from this world. We are the ultimate caregivers. And, if that isn't exciting enough, our careers go beyond a traditional deskjob. We can work in doctors offices, nursing homes, emergency rooms, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, wound care centers, pediatrics, cancer centers, cardiac labs, and many other healthcare services. If you don't like a particular field, you can always switch.I am very excited about being a nurse.....and love what I do.p.s. technically, while I have graduated nursing school - I still need to take the 'state boards.' It's a comprehensive test that, upon passing, makes me a REGISTERED NURSE. I take that later this month! =)UPDATE: I have passed the NCLEX, and am now, officially, an RN. Woot Woot!
