The Communist Party of China says that it opened cells at foreign universities. Are there any in the U.S.?
It was probably a reference to the Confucius Institutes which are non-profit organizations in colleges, universities and high schools all over the world. The institutes are affiliated to the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and are officially there to provide funding and support for Chinese language and cultural learning. Comments have sometimes been made about the institutes use for political propaganda. There is a particularly high number of them located within the USA. What must a professional show, in terms of documents and experience to candidate for a teaching position in the US?
My information concerns only elementary and secondary education teaching accreditation. The public school systems in the US are in the hands of individual state school systems, so it is almost impossible to answer this question since each state's rules can, and will, vary; furthermore, the state systems are divided into regional districts which may add rules concerning accreditation. Yet, most state's Boards of Eduction have implemented an evaluation process for teachers coming from other countries; while the process may vary from state to state, most of the procedures are similar.Do not let the fact that there are 50 state Boards of Education discourage you. Once again, the country is experiencing a teacher shortage, and states do hire credentialed teachers from other countries. The first step in the process is to get your credentials evaluated by an approved evaluation organization (see below). The organizations that evaluate teaching credentials are national organizations, so the evaluation you receive from them will be accepted by all the states. For example, I worked in an Illinois public school district that hired many teachers from other countries whose teaching credentials were evaluated by the state and district. After being evaluated, many of them had to take some more coursework and/or tests within a certain period of time, but they could work while they were doing this! Even US educated and certified teachers often have to take more coursework when they move to a new state, and they, too, often get a "grace period" allowing them to work while they finish their new state's requirements. So, the good news is that most states do hire teachers from other countries. The bad news is that individual state teacher accreditation requirements vary somewhat and you will have to research requirements on a state by state basis. Below, I have cut and pasted the names and web addresses of some of the organizations that are approved by the Illinois State Board of Education, http://www.isbe.net. Most of these organizations do credential evaluations for other states as well.
