What are your thoughts on the Manchester United vs Manchester City game? (11/12/17)

An underwhelming but effective Manchester City manages to eke out a victory against a competitive but Pogba-less United in the most anticipated clash of the EPL year, almost guaranteeing the EPL title.I normally would not write a review for this match, but the other answers give surprisingly little insight into Guardiola’s fascinating tweaks for this game.United lined up with an unusual Rojo - Smalling CB pairing due to the injuries of Jones (who made it to the squad but is not fully match fit) and Bailly, and Herrera played instead of a penalized Pogba. In classic reactive Mourinho fashion, a hard-working but offensively unproductive Lingard played as CAM.Meanwhile, City played with their usual 4–3–3, but Guardiola made several tweaks in response to Mourinho’s expected match preparations:Switching the positions of Silva and de Bruyne, who played this game as RCM and LCM, respectively.Gabi Jesus playing as a starter instead of Agüero, and starting from the left wing instead of playing as a CF.Sterling given freedom of movement throughout the attacking front, playing like a false 9.The first half exhibited complete domination by City against United’s low defensive block, with United not completing a successful attack until the end of the half. The unexpected positions of City’s front three allowed them to create a few good goal scoring chances.Deco, Sneijder, Xabi Alonso, Özil, Pogba. Mourinho teams can rarely execute their attacking plan against top teams without a top playmaker who is in charge of starting and organizing counterattacks. Without Pogba, United had no midfielder who could perform this task. Herrera is a good playmaker, too, but he does not have the physique or mindset to both defend against Silva and de Bruyne in a low defensive block and then start a counterattack. He’s not that kind of player. It didn’t help that Mourinho, in his eternal quest to minimize mistakes against top opponents, laid out his characteristic low defensive block, which always left Matic and Herrera at a disadvantage against City’s pressing.Lukaku, Martial and Rashford are top assets on the counter, but they can’t produce anything if the ball doesn’t get to them with some frequency. That’s how United went through the first 45 minutes of the game without producing a single shot against City.At the very least, United’s defensive system prevented Silva and De Bruyne from playing at their best, and thus undermined a lot of City’s offensive potential. However, the unexpected change in positions in City’s forward three did give United’s defense some headaches. With Matic and Herrera worried about Silva and De Bruyne, Sterling dropped down to receive in between the lines and produce 3 v 2 overloads against United’s midfield pair, and then proceeded to load the box and link up with Sane and Jesus. When this didn’t happen, Fernandinho tried to reach Sane and Jesus with long passes. One of these produced a key goal scoring chance that was beautifully struck by Sane and saved by De Gea, and led to the corner kick that produced City’s first goal. After this goal, United finally moved their lines forward in pursuit of a goal. Not exactly a very organized or well thought out attack, but at least enough to provoke mistakes in City’s shaky back line, which led to Rashford’s goal.In the 2nd half, City tried to control the game with a more defensive approach, but it gave United more space and opportunity to attack.Since De Bruyne and Silva had been mostly kept in check in the 1st half, Guardiola had to find other paths to build up attacks. That’s why Guardiola subbed in Gundogan as a holding midfielder, and moved Fernandinho as a CB instead of Kompany. This change didn’t improve City’s attack much, but at least City managed to score from another set piece, and another “non-academic” clearance from Lukaku.Soon after this goal, Guardiola decided to change his tactics once again. Mangala was subbed in as a CB, Fernandinho returned to his usual holding midfield spot, while Gundogan moved to the LCM position, with Silva now acting as the false 9 and Sane and Sterling returning to their usual positions on the left and right wings. The team stopped pressing so high and moved to a more reactive plan, hoping to nail a desperate United on the counter. With the need to score a 2nd goal—and without having to defend against an out-and-out striker like Jesus or Agüero—United starting taking more risks and playing more offensively once again. And just like in the end of the first half, they got surprisingly good chances against City’s nervous back four, and if it were not for some better finishing by Lukaku, they could have perfectly tied the match. Conclusions and commentsCity’s defense allowed United to produce several goal scoring chances that should not have happened in the first place. Delph’s mistakes handed over a goal and a goal scoring chance to Rashford, and Otamendi had mistakes both in defending and passing that led to United chances, as well as Rashford’s goal.John Stones is sorely needed for City to consistently build up good attacks from the back. Otamendi has improved in this regard, but he cannot be the main defender in charge of this task.Delph has been one of the season’s surprises at City, but he had a pretty rough night in defense against United.Sterling is probably my MOTM. City’s most effective and intimidating attacker in this match. Guardiola’s decision to use him as a false 9 caught United’s defense completely off guard. I’m loving his evolution as a player under Guardiola. While the Sterling experiment was a success, I’d say the Gabi Jesus experiment wasn’t. The young Brazilian striker plays best when he’s closer to the box, not starting from the left.United has to work on their set pieces. Apart from Lukaku’s bad clearances, City shouldn’t have had free players in the box that could strike those bad clearances.I think it would be unfair to criticize Herrera’s performance given that (a) he had to focus on the complex task of defending De Bruyne, Silva and Sterling and (b) the low defensive block and City’s pressing made it very difficult for United to counter attack successfully. Only midfielders with the ability to consistently dribble past pressing lines (Modric, Verratti, Pogba, Kovacic, etc) could succeed in such an unfavorable context. And finally, we come to the biggest loser of the match: Lukaku. Not only did his bad clearances allowed City to score twice, but he also missed United’s best chance of the 2nd half. The Belgian striker still can’t dispel the doubts we all have about his performances against top rivals.

What are the positives and negatives (with suggestions for improvement) of the education system in India?

Education, officially is a service, but openly and practically a business. The politicians, education officers and the education sellers connive and rob the gullible general public in broad day light. There is no monitoring of donations collected by schools, there is no monitoring of standards, there is no monitoring of processes and procedures. There is absolute disregard to the psychology of the children. There are schools which operate in a small 2 storey house and terrace, with very narrow staircase and in case of fire the children will get charred. How the safety and academic clearance is given to such schools - only the education department officials and the minister can answer. They are so shameless, they milk the defective education system (courtesy Thomas Babington Macaulay) to the core. Whenever the schools get caught, they are let off, with a lame excuse that if we penalize the school, the future of the children gets affected. The cramming (promotion of students just like that, whether or not they learn) which happened en mass, resulted in many clearing the 10th class - Many of them do not know elementary mathematics, letter writing, forget about English, they are dunce in their mother tongue / native language. They cannot write in their native language with out spelling and grammatical mistakes. Then comes the Intermediate education - the propaganda is so massive by corporate colleges, the poorest of the poor send their children to these colleges by borrowing money, by cutting on all other expenditure, and they are all disillusioned at the end, the plight of their children becomes miserable.Ultimately, the foundation is so fragile - that the child is worth nothing and is not even suitable to take up a job of casual labour. He is not learned enough to take up a decent job, he is also not fit to take up the job of casual labour, because of the false ego, his 10th class certificate gives him.Just by criticism, nothing changes. Is there a better idea? Is there hope?Well, yes.All private schools in the business of primary education must be closed. The Government must constitute an independent body like CBSE which takes care of primary education - pan India. Schools with uniform curriculum must be set up, with corporate participation (Only CSR fund - not management). The medium of teaching up to class V, must be in the local language. A little of English, No uniform required. No shoes. No fees. Only very nominal fees, irrespective of the economic status. The emphasis must be on real learning. At the end of the course, each student must be able to do simple mathematics, write letters - formal & informal, play outdoor games, build a healthy body and attitude. and all the teachers working in the existing private schools and those who have B.Ed must be appointed in these schools. The teachers must be trained to understand the aptitude and attitude of each child. Teacher to child ratio must be 1:20.Based on the above, each child must be promoted not on completion of a few years, but on complete learning to read & write and do simple mathematics, to secondary school. The secondary school must impart learning of subjects of higher standard, in both the local language and English. Again, no cramming, the emphasis must be on complete learning. The learned progresses, the remaining continue to learn. After secondary education, the child can join agriculture, higher education, vocations, purely on the basis of aptitude rather than the herd mentality of the parents. Again, the idea is to excel in their respective fields rather than be a mediocre in everything. The higher education of graduation, post graduation & research must be totally revamped with real teachers at the helm of the affairs rather than political appointees. The progress in the next 15–20 years will be exponential.Who will do all this? Pray God - Hope that Mr. Narendra Modi and his team takes a step forward.Thank you very much.

Why do former CIA directors need to have security clearance?

I think it’s easier to answer the question by explaining the nature of security clearances. The term “security clearance” references to a range of clearances. So you and I could both hold clearances yet we’re not cleared to the same level. To get a TS-SCI clearance averages around 500 days right now. The point is: getting a clearance is a BFD, it takes a lot of resources, it takes a ton of time. For my clearance, all of my foreign contacts were checked out, all of the foreign trips I’d taken in my life were reviewed, my neighbors were interviewed, all of the places I’d stayed from high school on up (including a girlfriend’s apartment I stayed at for 3 months) were confirmed. It’s very, very time consuming. That’s why Jared Kushner’s list of omissions on his security application were such red flags—they really do sweat the details on those things.Additionally, people cross back and forth all the time. Take James Clapper: he had a long career in the US military in a range of different jobs. He worked in the private sector for intelligence/defense contractors (like SRA). He ran the DIA, the NGA, than the Undersecretary for Intelligence, and finally the ODNI. Take Bob Gates: he was in the US military in positions that required security clearances, a senior analyst and executive with CIA, on the National Security Council, returned to be Deputy Director, then assistant to the President, a professor, then Director of the CIA, then various academic administration positions (dean of the business school at Texas A&M, etc.) then SecDef. Are you arguing that every time he leaves a secure position he loses his clearance and then we take 1–2 years to renew it? Or just every time he leaves government (which he did multiple times)? There are a host of individuals (Leon Panetta, David Petraeus, John Brennan, Gates I just mentioned) who have gone back and forth between government positions that required clearances to private sector jobs or academia to CIA Director and then to other roles (sometimes in Govt, sometimes not). There are plenty of examples of individuals who held classified positions in executive roles in USG who were then called back to assist in an investigation or study.Additionally, it’s not that by holding a position you automatically get a security clearance. Other than the President of the US, everyone else has to qualify for one. So it’s not that any individual who held a clearance NEEDS to have a clearance once they’ve left the job. It’s that a clearance says “we investigated this person thoroughly and at this point they’re qualified to access material up to this level.” Then, whether you’re employed or not, you are responsible for maintaining your clearance. So if you consort with foreign nationals, take unannounced foreign trips, have foreign bank accounts—all of those actions could jeopardize your clearance if you’re employed in a secure position. If you don’t renew your clearance every year and stay current on your security obligations (like getting a polygraph as required) then you lose your clearance. A clearance is not an honor or a title. It’s a qualification.Additionally, it’s not like a driver’s license. You don’t get it and then you’ve got it for a 5 year period. Every time I was going to take a foreign vacation I had to submit it in advance for review. Every time I had contact with a foreign national who was not a US ally and in the military or IC, I had to submit on it. So your security clearance is continually updated. So, an ex-CIA Director doesn’t automatically have a clearance. They have to renew it. But to deny one their clearance status is kind of stupid. John Brennan knows more vital national security details than does our President (and I’m not implying Donald Trump is dumb, it’s just the nature of the position and the details involved). In this case, the whole issue of clearances is a red herring. This is not about clearances, this is about petty vindictiveness. Donald Trump doesn’t like critics. A bunch of people who have served in the US military with honor, had long careers in the US intelligence community (usually in multiple roles) have come out and criticized Donald Trump. And he won’t have it so he’s doing what he can to try and punish them for daring to criticize him. Just watch—someone ex-General will dump on Trump and he’ll lose his PX and O-club privileges.
