After reading all these posts I couldn't stop myself from writing one of my own. There has no doubt been some exceptional display of talent while answering this question but what I am about to unveil is pure heart. EO (Entrepreneurs' Organization) members indicate that 70% of the value of EO is the forum experience. Forum being the group of 8 to 10 company owners that meet every month.Before joining a forum, one has to take a one day training on the proper protocol during a meeting. The protocol is designed to increase trust and sharing and it is effective. The protocol is constantly being tweaked and every other year we hire a trainer to update us.There is no professional moderation during our meetings. The only attendees are the other entrepreneurs (and for us, a trainer every couple of years).The forum meeting is completely confidential, no notes are taken and the meeting is in a private location. If you miss the meeting, no one "catches you up" on anything that was discussed.As an example of protocol, no advice is allowed. If I give you advice, I'm going to expect you to take my advice and if you don't, I'm naturally going to stop telling you what I think because you don't listen. Similarly, if I discuss an issue and everyone tells me what to do, I'm going to feel defensive and be less forthcoming next time. So the protocol is that if I have advice, I think about what experience I had that shaped my advice. Instead of advice I share the story of my experience. You take what you will from my story and I'm just sharing a story, not telling you what to do. That's just one example of the forum protocol.This is our time together and we take it seriously. There is a $100 fine for being one minute late to the meeting. $50 if you have an audible alert during the meeting. $50 paid by the host if someone from the outside interrupts the meeting. Miss two meetings in a year and you are automatically ejected from the forum.The sharing in my EO forum meetings is more intense and more in depth than I've ever experienced, anywhere, ever. For a time my wife was a member of the spousal forum and her experience was the same.Could you meet with a cohort of peers twice a month and get the same benefit, I don't know. Here are some metrics to help you compare.I'm a member of EO Silicon Valley and my forum commute from where I live in Sonoma County is 2 hours each way. There was a couple who had moved to Arizona, and for several years they flew in for their forum meetings (which were never on the same days). He had the business and she was in the spousal forum.Would you fly from another state or commute 2 hours each way to attend the meeting that you think is 80% of the value I get? We schedule everything around our EO forum meeting calendar. It's that valuable for us.That said, do the twice a month meeting with your cohort as long as it brings you value. It's not an either / or situation.

I was hired as digital marketing manager for a supplements company, whose name I rather not say. I worked for them for exactly 1 month. From the beginning everything was “a little off". They hired me after a 10 minutes interview in which the husband and wife took turns questioning my social media skills, which is only 10% of the job, and didn't bother asking about anything else. The wife seemed like a total nut case. She was always erratic, on edge, and was rude with the employees. It was like every day was a bad day for her and she was taking it out on everyone.So as with any marketing job, I did market research, competitor analysis, learned everything there was to know about the products, and designed an entire marketing plan for the next month (since I was starting off I didnt want to plan a full quarter just yet). There was a specific fitness/health event taking place that upcoming month so I included some campaigns surrounding it. The wife basically has me remove everything about that event saying something about them not wanting to participate that year. Both bosses approved the plan.The following month begins (I started working mid month) and I'm going with my plan as approved, keeping an eye on analytics just in case. The event day rolls around and I'm called in for a meeting with staff. Everyone is sitting around the meeting table and everyone is discussing some details of what they need to make sure our participation on the event (which was decided last minute) would be successful. So someone asks why we didn't market our involvement in the event. The wife boss proceeds to look me dead in the eyes and say that I really dropped the ball on that, how could I forget something so important, berating me in front of everyone. So I wait for her to finish, take out my tablet and show her the marketing plan she approved. Reminded her that I had just been hired and had been relying on the information provided and approved by her and her husband alone. And looked her dead in the eyes and said, “You told me to remove the campaigns for this event from my marketing calendar. So in reality I wasnt the one who dropped the ball.” After the meeting it was lunch time, so I went to my desk to sit for a second and process what had just occurred. What in God's UNPROFESSIONAL hell had I just experienced? An email pops up, it's the husband boss asking me to come in for a meeting with him and his wife when I get back from lunch. I closed the tab, said “have a nice lunch" to my coworkers and left. As soon as I found a safe spot to park I went ahead and emailed my resignation letter stating that I did not feel as though I was a good fit for such a hostile environment.” They tried calling me, but at that point I had experienced so much verbal abuse and seen everyone be verbally abused by this psycho for the entire time I was there. I didn't owe them anything. I walked away that day and have been more careful in my interview processes ever since, making sure I only work for companies I believe in and for bosses who respect their employees.
