PDF Editor FAQ

What is the difference between a master’s degree in orthodontic and a residency program in the USA, and what type will qualify me to be a lecturer in a university?

There is no Master’s degree-level training program in orthodontics in the USA, as the qualifying degree for dentists in the USA is a professional doctorate. Our family dentist’s degree is a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery). University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry describes the degree programs in dentistry at a top public university in my state. Assuming you have qualified as a dentist in your home country, the program you would probably want to start with would be the DMD-AS (Doctor of Dental Medicine - Advanced Standing), which would minimize duplicating course content already covered in your foreign dentistry training. To qualify to teach dentistry at a university, you would probably want to earn a PhD in Oral Sciences; that program can be pursued as a joint degree with the DMD (which would save some time). To specialize in orthodontics, you would want UIC’s Advanced Specialty Training Program in Orthodontics; the Advanced Specialty Training Programs would also be the part of the College of Dentistry which handles residencies.Other accredited dentistry programs in the USA should be fairly similar to those at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Hope this info is helpful to you; good luck!

What is your best advice?

Today, I realized a very important lesson and thus want everyone to know it.Not that you don't know, but even after knowing you don't follow. The Australian Healthcare and Hospital Association's (AHHA) suggests that dental check-ups should be conducted once every 3 years for adults, and 1 every 2 years for children. But how many of us do so! Very few. Isn’t it?Today, I along with my father visited a dental clinic for his checkup. The thought just struck my mind that I never had my teeth cleaned and checked by a dentist as a part of the regular checkup. SO, after they scaled and applied a cap on my father's tooth, I requested the doctor to check my teeth as well and clean it.On examination, they found that my last second molar teeth on all four sides have considerable decay[1] in them, eroding the enamel on that side. The second molar on the lower right side had a much large decay, almost penetrating the pulp cavity, creating a deeper hole.I had no idea about it because these teeth are in the corner of my mouth and I did never see or feel any decay there, nor there was any pain or sensitivity. But visiting the dentist helped me know that my teeth were in a bad condition. He even showed me the holes after cutting the decay through a mirror and I could see appreciable holes, damaging my teeth. They suggested for a double layered filling so that the holes don't further enlarge and enter the pulp cavity. They even told that these fillings are only temporary solution and I’ll have to undergo a Root Canal Therapy(RCT)[2] in the nearby future, as the holes have been considerably increased in size and fillings can't protect them for a long time.I would seriously never have known about these, had I not allowed a dental checkup. You might be taking good care of your teeth, but that's only superficial, i.e. mainly maintaining a white and shiny appearance. You knowingly or unknowingly ignore the interiors of the tooth, the very foundation. So, I request everyone to get a dental checkup[3] of their teeth at least once every year. It's no big deal. But this small step might protect your teeth and keep it healthy and intact. You might not realize the importance of your teeth because you have it now. But when you lose it, you will realize how important they are.Ask a 70-year-old foodie who has lost all his teeth and he will tell you its importance.Or just ask your old grandfather or grandmother and they will tell you. This was not just an answer but a message to everyone to be a bit aware of their oral and dental hygiene.[4]Get regular dental checkups. Brush twice a day. Clean your tongue as well. Wash your mouth after every food intake. Floss your teeth and mouth daily.Really small habits but humungous results.[5]Give them care while you still have them.To clear all the doubts and confusions you might be having in regards to dental hygiene.[6]Thank you!Nilay Kumar (निलय कुमार):D( your valuable feedbacks and little appreciations will motivate me to write more :))Footnotes[1] Tooth Cavities: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments[2] Root canal treatment: Everything you need to know[3] University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry[4] Oral Hygiene Basics.[5] 11 Best Practices for Healthy Teeth[6] Caring for my teeth

What are usually really good universities for aspiring Dental Students that have great education and high graduation rates? I major in health science right now and am working on an associates? I live in Reading, PA

The University of Illinois - Chicago has a College of Dentistry which sounds very good, from looking at their website; I don’t know what their graduation rate is, however, and you would have to pay out-of-state tuition there. (On the other hand, the DMD you would earn there would qualify you to take the licensing exam to become a dentist in any state in the USA, including Pennsylvania; check with your state’s Department of Health as to what the licensing procedure is, though.)You will want to transfer to a 4-year college and complete a Bachelor’s degree (maybe in Biology?) before applying for admission to dental school. Any dental school website should be able to tell you what undergraduate coursework they want to see as prerequisites for the dentistry coursework, and what kind of standardized test results they would want to see (probably the DAT - Dental Admissions Test). Roadmap to Dental School Application from the UIC College of Dentistry website outlines how you will need to prepare for dental school. Pennsylvania Dental Schools is from the website of the Pennsylvania Dental Association, which as a professional organization for Pennsylvania dentists I assume would only list reputable, accredited dental schools; click any of the links in that list to go directly to that dental school’s website, where you should be able to find similar information to the UIC page I linked. Good luck!
