Dear high schooler, you got a lot to learn. (There are 15 things to say.)High school is the stage where you make long-lasting friendships. Become friends with a loner. Become friends with anyone. Now’s the time to find and create friendships that will last a lifetime!Join clubs, sports team, or whatever interests you in school. You don’t have to join in every club at school but do join in the things that interest you. Whether it be chess club, anime club, language club, basketball team or even in Student Council—go for it. Sometimes taking risks in joining something can be beneficial or not. Try it out!Learn how to say no! This is a life skill. In high school, people will ask you to do favours or services for them. In the case, you don’t have to do these services. Whether it be sex consent or doing their homework—learn how to say no! No is an indication of authority that you do not approve whatever is the activity.Drink moderately, and not excessively. I say this is because high school is the year where adolescences experience their first drinking (as well as their first sexual intercourse.) and so, drink moderately and not excessively. The reason is the more you drink alcohol excessively, as you grow older you might have liver problems.Also, drugs are not worth your life. You might hear a billion of times from teachers that drugs is bad. However, for some, they turn into drugs instead of seeking for help. They take drugs to forget their problems or even they want to feel good. Plus certain drugs have cognitive hamper (I don’t want to say retardation since its not used anymore.)Speaking of sexual intercourse, wear protection!!! I know teens having their first one is pretty common in the States and less in other countries, but if you do end up having sexual intercourse or having a blowjob—please wear protection. This creates unwanted pregnancies and diseases such as infections, STDs or AIDs.If you do need help, seek help—don’t stay quiet in the shadows. It’s better to seek help then to stay quiet and fail at life or academics.If you have a crush, tell them how you feel. Don’t wait for years to come. Don’t wait till your high school reunion and finally confessed to them, because what if they found the one or even have kids. The reason is you want to live in the now. If you get rejected, you learn and grow out of your experience. If you had many relationships but no stable one, figure out why you have unstable.Learn how to make your own letter of intent and a CV (Curriculum Vitae.) This is a life skill you should learn. As once a high schooler, this skill comes in handy when you want to apply for a job, or even applying colleges/universities on why they should hire you as a student.In the summer, get a summer job. I sadly regret this a lot, but once you are free in the summer—no summer school, no vacation trips whatsoever, get a summer job. I say this is because a summer job helps you gain a couple of dollars for yourself but also you gain many life work experiences.If you don’t want to work, then volunteer instead. If let say you don’t want to work during the summer year, volunteer instead. Volunteering helps you gain life experiences that will help you toward getting a job. Plus, it is fun volunteering at an animal shelter, or even at an elder centre.Work your way up. Failing Calculus or English? Practice, practice, practice makes perfect. Want to go to a school trip? Save money. Want to be valedictorian? work your butt off.Think longterm, not short term. When you make decisions in high school, think for the long term, not short term. Some of these choices you make will impact and affect your future. Choose wisely.Enjoy every moment of high school while it last! In a blink of an eye, you started high school a couple years ago, and then boom—you are graduating. Enjoy every aspect of high school. Cherish every moment they say.If that doesn’t work out, it’s okay, for some life after high school is better (or worst.) Not everyone will have the good life after high school is over. I’m Sajna, the recruitment specialist at INSOFE. I have been taking care of students placement for the last one year. For the past one year 75% of our students in each batch are placed in various companies like Philips, Deloitte, Cognizant, HSBC , Idea, Novartis, UHG , and the list goes on. The students are also able to crack interview offline with various start-ups and fortune 500 companies. The average salary of a fresh graduate passing out of our CPEE program is 5.5 Lakhs and the average hike of an experienced candidate is 60% on their previous salary which go in lines with the industry standards.

I’m answering this in the context of my PhD students. And of course in the field of computer science. Here are some things I usually say to my first years shortly after they arrive on campus.I want them to know:That a spot in a good PhD program is a great opportunity (you know this already), but it is meaningless unless you take full advantage of it. PhD admission is not the end goal, just one more step on the way.That no matter how hard you work in the next few years and how much you sacrifice (save health and family), the returns will be worth it in opportunities that completely change the rest of your careers (and lifestyles); and by extension, the lives of your family and loved ones.That I will do everything in my power to help you, including pulling late nights writing papers and proposals, and going out of my way to fight for the opportunities you deserve. But I cannot do what you need to do. I cannot learn for you; I cannot fail for you; and I cannot experience for you.That fear is the root of so much that holds you back. Fear of failure, fear of judgment from me or your peers, fear of regrets of decisions past, and fear of disappointing yourself and others. Recognize it, accept it, and work on it. There’s nothing you should fear at your age outside of issues of health and family. Everything else can be fixed with time.That I hate wasting time. Life is too short. Research is rarely a straight line, and mistakes and detours are time well spent. But it’s the dawdling, the hesitation, and the lack of focus that waste time.That I’ve already achieved most of my personal goals. I have more than enough money, prestige, accomplishments to keep me happy, and a job that I enjoy immensely. What drives me to put in the extra hours, the late nights? It’s you. Every young woman and man we bring into our lab is awesome, and playing my role in helping each of you fulfill your massive potential is what gets me up in the morning.That I get it may be hard to understand or believe some of the things I just listed, because of the decades of life and experience that separate us. But that’s ok. We have a bit of time, and Heather and I are pretty transparent. It won’t take too long to understand what I mean, just by observing the choices we make day in and day out.
