PDF Editor FAQ

What does multiplication mean in physics?

While analysing systems we are presented with properties of the system which change in a directly portional, or indirectly proportional way.One simple example is the pressure-volume-temperature relationship. To elaborate, if we construct an experiment in which everything is kept constant (or almost constant) and the only two variables are the pressure and the volume of the system, we would observe that upon a decrease of the volume, the pressure would rise to keep everything else constant (something similar happens with our lungs and the diaphragm). If we were to model this behaviour mathematically, we could easily express it like this:Constant=Pressure*Volume. If we were to do the same thing with temperature and pressure, we would observe that upon the increase of pressure, temperature increases too proportionally. So in order to model this behaviour mathematically we would usre an equation like the one below:Constant = Pressure/Temperature.So finally, to answer your question.Work is a physical quantity which increases as a force is applied on a moving object (movement must be parallel to the force). The bigger the displacement the higher the work done. The bigger the force used the bigger the work done. The same works for the Ampere*hour, basically this quantity is used to show how much "energy" is stored in a battery like system.

How would Germans civilians treat the allied aviators when they would bail out from their shot down heavy bombers and landed near German towns and cities?

“How would Germans civilians treat the allied aviators when they would bail out from their shot down heavy bombers and landed near German towns and cities?”A number of years ago I flew to Frankfurt, Germany en route for a business trip in Europe. My father asked me if I had time to go to the ‘Bahnhof’ (train station) and take a photo of a particular glass wall in the station. As it happened my plane had a fire on board (too long a story for here) and we made an emergency landing in Keflavik, Iceland, which delayed me by a couple of days so that by the time I got to Frankfurt there wasn’t time to go to the ‘Bahnhof’.When I got home a couple of weeks later my father asked me if I got the photo. When I told him ‘no’, he said ‘ok’ and went to talk about something else, but I stopped him and asked what the picture was about. He said, “if you didn’t get the picture then it doesn’t matter.” and again tried to change the subject. But I wouldn’t let it go and eventually he started to talk. The following isn’t verbatim, but the gist of what he told me.“It was the beginning of 1944 when my Halifax bomber was shot down returning from a night mission over Germany. After the rest of the crew had jumped I bailed out of the burning bomber and eventually landed in the snow in a forest. I was on the lam for 5 days but a blizzard forced me to take shelter in a hunting chalet in the mountains. The snow kept me in for 2 days and when it stopped I got ready to make the final dash for the Swiss border, but when I opened the door I saw I was surrounded by German guards, with dogs, their guns pointed at me. “Hande hoch!” (hands up) they ordered.I was taken back to Frankfurt and incarcerated at Dulag Luft, the infamous interrogation camp for aircrew near the city. Ten days later, when the interrogators decided they weren’t going to get anything useful out of me I was readied to be transferred to a permanent POW camp. I was now a ‘Kriegie’ (Prisoner of War).I was marched with about 20 or 30 other Kriegies to the train station with half a dozen ‘Luftwaffe’ (air force) guards. As we waited in the station the air raid sirens went off and bombs started exploding all around. The train with the rows of red cattle cars we were to be loaded on was hit. So were houses surrounding the train station and of course some of the tracks and factories nearby. When the all clear sounded the train station was filled with hundreds of German civilians. Perhaps some of them from nearby air raid shelters, others waiting for trains and still others from the houses nearby. They had a rope with them. They threw the rope over the iron framework that supported the glass wall and tied a noose in the end of it. Then they grabbed the nearest ‘Gefangen’ (captured man), put the noose around his neck and hauled him up, kicking. The ‘Feldwebel’ (sergeant) in charge of the guards could do nothing. He only had 6 armed soldiers and there were at least 200 civilians. Even in the unlikely event that he had dared to shoot his own people they only had so many bullets and they would have been quickly overwhelmed and beaten to death protecting the ‘Luftgangsteren’ (air pirates). But the sergeant did send for reinforcements as the civilians hung one man after another, their feet kicking in the air as the life was choked out of them.I was maybe the second or third to next man in line when 20 or 30 reinforcements burst into the train station and surrounded our little group, rifles at the ready. The crowd thought better of it and faded away, thus ending that episode of ‘Lynchjustiz’ (vigilantism). Another train was procured and we were loaded on board with our former German guards to begin our trip to Sagan, Poland and the start of our life in Stalag Luft III (where The Great Escape happened a few months later).”The glass wall where the nooses were hung was still there and that’s what Dad wanted the photo of.I’m guessing that this is the wall that Dad wanted the photo of.frankfurt hauptbahnhof images - Google Search:Luftgangster over Germany: The lynching of American airmen in the shadow of the air war | K.T. Hall“This study analyzes the Lynchjustiz committed against American airmen in Germany during World War II. Largely overlooked by historians, the extent of violence against flyers is drastically underes-timated, hindered by the complex historical memory of the Allied air war, the arduous denazification process, and the looming Cold War of the postwar era. While the precise number of Allied flyers that experienced Lynchjustiz is impossible to determine, due to a lack of remaining records, this study provides a more accurate estimate and an improved historical analysis of the broader impact of these events on history. Lynchjustiz initially occurred as a spontaneous response to the devastating experiences of the Allied air war in 1943. The Nazi regime took advantage of German citizens' plight to endure the overwhelming and inexorable air war that erased all physically and psychologically boundaries and attempted to harness the outrage of the German population, redirecting the anger explicitly against the new enemy in their midst. Individuals and groups of civilians, Party officials, security forces, government officials, as well as military members carried out this state-sponsored vigilantism, which was a byproduct of the political and societal instability produced by the Nazi regime. © 2018 GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences.
