What is it like to attend Washington University in St. Louis as an undergrad?
It was a great time, and I really appreciated my experiences there as a student. For some context: I graduated with a degree in anthropology in May 2015, after finishing in three years. At the moment, I am attending graduate school, and I hope to matriculate into medical school in the near future. While at WashU, I took classes mostly in the College of Arts and Sciences, and a few in the Olin Business School.Although I can't speak to pros and cons of our peer schools, I will do my best to elaborate upon what I enjoyed and what I thought could be improved upon with WashU in the future. This answer is divided up into sections, to make it easier to read.Academics:Pros:I think it is difficult, but manageable, to get great grades at WashU. For better or worse, most of the incoming freshman class holds high aspirations to pursue a professional science-related career, and this is reflected in the class enrollment for the fall general chemistry course, which routinely tops 900 students (out of a possible 1500). The school's reputation for academic rigor is certainly characterized by this, although I think the rigor certainly carries into most of the classes there.Regardless of your major, or the classes you choose to take, you'll be challenged here. Particularly in the hard science classes required for graduate schools in the sciences (chemistry, biology, organic chemistry, physics), creative thinking was actually rewarded -- not just rote memorization. Questions for finals in those classes incorporated snapshots of experiments and applying science towards achieving a specific goal or task. The result of these experiences is learning how to think, rather than learning how to simply parrot ideas and approaches to problems. From what I've gathered, this doesn't seem to be congruent with many colleges these days, unfortunately.Some may say that majors outside of the hard sciences, engineering, and architecture are much easier at WashU, but I would disagree. I really enjoyed most of my classes in the anthropology department, and how they not only bridged connections between so many different fields (Biological Basis of Behavior -- biology + anthropology + history; Islam and Politics -- religion + international relations + anthropology; Modern Japan -- history + politics + anthropology, etc.), but also just how hands-on they were. Its common for people to double major, even across different schools. Throughout my time at WashU, I was a part of a departmental program that involved taking two freshman seminars in medical anthropology, and journaling and participating in a community-based internship, which I completed by working in the finance department and OR of a local organ transplant facility. Another one of my courses, called "Writing Culture," involved drafting ethnographic essays on virtually any topic of interest; I wrote mine about a megachurch just outside of St. Louis, and the local Mardi Gras celebrations, in addition to some others. Even in my "Cell Biology" course, our professor required that we attend a lecture on campus or at the medical school relevant to our class, and to write a short essay about it. Given that most of my courses were cross-listed with other departments, I imagine that my experiences are somewhat representative of the school at-large as well.Additionally, I found that professors were generally welcoming and eager to know their students. Unlike graduate school, teachers made an effort to stick around after class to answer any residual questions from the class, and were available during office hours. Because most classes are small enough, professors generally get to know you by name, and you'll likely see them from time to time after moving on from their class. They really go the extra mile. Even after graduating, I am still in touch with my academic advisor, as well as a professor that I am collaborating with on a manuscript.Beyond classes, students engage in research, whether its through their department, or at the medical school, which is only a stop away on the Metrolink. Students also commonly study abroad through a host of different programs, offered exclusively by WashU and with other institutions as well.Cons:At times, however, I felt that the majority of resources within the school were drawn towards both the business school and the basic science departments (presumably for the pre-health crowd), not only just for big ticket-items like new buildings, but also for smaller things like newspaper subscriptions and listed opportunities through the Career Center. I can imagine for someone involved with neither of these parts of the school, this could be frustrating to watch.Through many of my classes at WashU, but particularly the lower-level ones, there was a pervasive culture of stress about grades -- although this can be attributed to just how challenging the school can be. This was especially the case with the pre-med courses. The volume of students in the library seemed to ebb and flow with the schedule of introductory science course midterms, and pre-med students seemed to be the most vocal about their workload and the difficulty of the classes they were taking. Perhaps I only noticed since I took these classes, but most of the time, this attitude of stress was stifling, and it takes a conscious effort to remove yourself from anxiety that seems to chain itself to these courses. A fear of failure often created a disenfranchising, rather than empowering, environment within these classes.Ironically, I think the school offers a lot of resources for incoming students taking introductory science courses, such as recorded lectures, weekly help sessions, office hours with professors and TAs, weekly quizzes to keep you on top of your work, and peer-led problem solving groups. WashU certainly gives you the tools to succeed.Student Life:Pros:Virtually any review you'll read about WashU will talk about how great the food and the dorms are, and how beautiful our campus is. This is mostly true. I won't comment on this, since I think this information is available in other answers on Quora, on the school's website, and through other online sources, but WashU really is exceptional in this regard. The quality of our campus is hard to beat.Like Billy mentions in his answer, I also thought that the size of the school was perfect, in the sense that the campus felt inclusive, but not claustrophobic. Students come to WashU from all over the country and around the world -- although there are substantial contingents from Illinois, California, New York, and Texas, I thought the school has done a good job of recruiting students from less-traveled states and other countries. In the recent past, WashU has been criticized by the national media (mainly the NYT) for not recruiting a more economically-diverse class, but it seems that the school has since made greater efforts on this front.As Billy also mentions in his answer, WashU is not the place to be if you're looking for a state-school atmosphere. There isn't much school spirit when it comes to our competitive sports, Greek life is only a presence on campus, and most people don't go out more than a few times a week. However, I don't think students really come to WashU with these expectations.Personally, I really liked most of the people at WashU. Something I particularly appreciated is the fact that there is no "stereotypical" WashU student. People are smart, accomplished, ambitious, and goal-oriented, but not to point of being snobby or pretentious. The class size makes it do-able for most everyone to get involved with something on campus, whether it be a student organization, a club sport, Greek life, or whatever else. Coupled with the housing arrangements offered by the school (the South 40, Millbrook and Village Apartments, etc.) and off-campus living situations, there's a real sense of community at WashU. Everyone has a stake in what happens on our campus, which was something I really enjoyed during my time there.Beyond classes, there's always something going on at WashU. Student organizations and the school itself sponsor nationally-recognized speakers on a regular basis (I saw Bill Clinton, Nina Davuluri, Reza Aslan, and Jim McKelvey speak, among others). Even this upcoming fall, WashU is scheduled to host one of the general election presidential debates, which the university has done a number of times in the past. One of the clubs is responsible for a school-wide concert that happens once a term, called WILD, which has featured artists such as Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper, Mac Miller, and Icona Pop. The gym and the surrounding areas always have people playing pick-up basketball, tennis, squash, and soccer. I've occasionally seen students even playing cricket on Mudd Field.Off-campus, there's also plenty to do. Forest Park, the largest urban park in the US, is a stone's throw away from campus, and has a cluster of museums and a zoo all free to the public. The Delmar Loop, a Route 66 road trip stop, is right behind campus, with a host of great bars and restaurants, as well as a concert venue and an independent movie theater. In the city, students often go to Cardinals' or Blues' games. Students get free passes to use the local public transport system. For longer breaks, it's not uncommon for people to visit Chicago, which is only about a 5-hour drive.St. Louis tends to get a bad rep nationally, but I think the city itself really added to my experiences at WashU. I like to think of St. Louis as a community that you can really get to know after a few years of living there, versus impersonal, formidable cities like London or New York. Everyday expenses and rent are pretty cheap, and the city is drive-able with reasonable parking. For people that are interested, St. Louis also has a thriving start-up culture, rooted in a revitalized neighborhood called the Central West End, which is right across the Park from campus. In general, I think the city strikes the right balance of big and small.Cons:Perhaps as a product of many of the strengths I listed above, WashU felt almost too tame, comfortable, and politically correct at times. It wasn't very fashionable to hold political views that veered into the center-right, when colleges should really be places of open-mindedness. Like most colleges these days, social justice warriors run rampant through our class pages and groups on Facebook. During one finals period, the school erupted over a moral dilemma of euthanizing a bear cub, suspected of having rabies, that scratched a few students at a school-sponsored petting zoo. For reasons I don't understand, an issue of public health transformed itself into a fundamentally political argument.WashU is located only seven miles away from Ferguson, but it would be difficult to guess this from walking through our campus last year. In late 2014, there was certainly lots of dialogue on campus regarding the events in Ferguson, in the form of solidarity, silent protests, emails sent by the administration, and a commission created by the school to "foster change" in impoverished communities in St. Louis, but there was little action that resulted from those efforts. The school (and a vocal group of students) seemed to be more interested in creating a perception of action around themselves, rather than taking part in action itself. Given that we were so close to Ferguson, I wondered why more students didn't engage in community service there, since we were in the rare position to actually support the city that re-opened conversations on race relations in the US for the first time in decades. Hopefully the school will do more in the future to get more students involved in creating positive change throughout the local community, as St. Louis continues to face challenges rooted in its past. In general, I found the university and the student body to be somewhat out of touch with the inequality and socioeconomic realities of St. Louis and its suburbs.The Institution Itself:A fact that explains much of the character of WashU is its founding date -- 1853. Compared to most elite colleges in America, the school is quite young, and only began to substantially gain national recognition over the past forty years. As a result, WashU is perpetually "catching up" to its peer schools. Old buildings are constantly being demolished, with new buildings replacing them like clockwork. The school has progressively moved through its graduate programs and departments (the medical school in the past, and more recently the business school), and has revamped them substantially, one by one. To attract more students, WashU has become known for spamming the mailboxes of virtually every student with a top SAT score, spending considerable time and effort towards enhancing "quality of life" factors on campus, and offering full-ride merit scholarships to students often deciding between WashU and its name-brand peer schools.Is this insecurity, or signs of progress? I don't know, but whatever the administration is doing, it's certainly working. The school is slowly gaining name recognition amongst the public (for the record, we are not in DC or Washington state), and WashU continues to remain at the forefront of fields as diverse as medicine, architecture, and political science. Over time, I suspect that the reputation of the university will continue to improve, and that in the very near future, we will have caught up and sped ahead of many of our peer schools.Beyond graduation, I think the school prepares you well for graduate school, standardized testing (like the MCAT, from personal experience) or whatever may lie ahead in the department of critical thinking. In terms of school reputation, academia seems to understand the academic rigor of WashU, both in terms of admissions and once you go somewhere else. For job recruitment, experiences are mixed, depending on the sector. Plenty of people seem to go on to work at prestigious firms, especially from the business school. The school won't do any favors for you, like maybe Harvard or Stanford would, but it won't hurt you either.Summary:Over my three years, I was constantly impressed, and re-impressed, by the calibre of students and professors I had the chance to rub shoulders with at WashU. It certainly has its negatives, but like any institution, it will have its own set of challenges. I've made some terrific, life-long friends there, and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in getting a great education.
