PDF Editor FAQ

When insurance companies denied people for pre-existing conditions, before Obamacare, did that mean people who had them couldn't get insurance?

Correct. Which meant it was difficult to get individual insurance. It also meant that if denied by one carrier - subsequent applications often required that admission - and was grounds for denying subsequent applications. Price wasn’t the issue and the idea that this was somehow overblown by the Democrats is patently absurd.Donna Dubinsky (yes that Donna Dubinsky of Palm Computing and Handspring fame) described her own personal challenges in a NYT Op-Ed in 2011 - Money Won’t Buy You Health Insurance.THIS isn’t the story of a poor family with a mother who has a dreadful disease that bankrupts them, or with a child who has to go without vital medicines. Unlike many others, my family can afford medical care, with or without insurance.Instead, this is a story about how broken the market for health insurance is, even for those who are healthy and who are willing and able to pay for it.Most employees assume that if they lose their job and the health coverage that comes along with it, they’ll be able to purchase insurance somewhere. The members of Congress who want to repeal the provision of last year’s health insurance law that makes it easier for individuals to buy coverage must assume that uninsured people do not want to buy it, or are just too cheap or too poor to do so.The truth is that individual health insurance is not easy to get.The reality is that once denied by one carrier - it perpetuates through the application process to others and it became a very effective tool for insurance carriers to simply “cherry pick” only healthy people for individual coverage.Individual coverage becomes increasingly important in an economy full of part-timers and “gig” workers - and that market is growing.

Is Obama’s healthcare broken? I just tried to renew my health coverage and I got 0% help on my premium. To renew is $1,600/month and I don't even make that much a month.

Wow, it’s almost like Obama’s been out of office for four years and the president has decreased subsidies for premiums, made deductibles higher, and vastly increased the cost of insurance.I’m not trying to deny that health insurance can really be expensive. Although it is worth noting someone living on less than $1600/month, in a household of at least two as the applicant describes on her profile, would qualify for Medicaid in the state of Ohio[1][1][1][1] . Obviously the questioner makes more than that or they wouldn’t be buying insurance through the market instead of using Medicaid. But this question is even more insincere than that.Considering the OP has a Thoroughbred eventing horse, an Arab endurance horse, and a four year old gelding as a pasture pet, owns a farm, gets rental income, and works as a teacher, my guess is they make way more than $1,600/month. In fact, I’ll take a guess that someone who owns multiple performance horses probably has over 100K in income. If they don’t, then they should definitely not be competing with those horses, and they should probably consider selling them to someone who can afford to care for them.EDIT: Hilariously, the OP has now updated her profile to remove references to these performance horses and rental properties.Footnotes[1] Ohio Department of Medicaid[1] Ohio Department of Medicaid[1] Ohio Department of Medicaid[1] Ohio Department of Medicaid

If you use your healthcare coverage in America under the new regulations for something expensive, do the premiums increase?

No - other than premiums generally are tied to everyone's collective health - so the more healthcare costs (expensive or simple treatment), the more premium rates rise.Health insurance premiums aren't like auto insurance premiums (which can be pegged to speeding tickets and accidents). There's an attempt to tie usage to rates (with incentives for "wellness"), but these amount to discounts on the advertised or base rate - not penalties for use. This was NOT always the case. Obamacare fundamentally changed this by disallowing what used to be called "pre-existing conditions."Insurance companies used to be able to pick-and-chose who they would cover - by denying coverage based on a pre-existing-condition." Once denied by one company - it became very difficult to get coverage anywhere (because every "application" for health coverage asked that question - "Have you ever been denied health insurance coverage?").
