In my opinion, the best student organizations to join depend on what you’re there for. Before I graduated from VCU with a degree in biomedical engineering, I had been in the following organizations: Pre-Med Society at VCU, Society for Engineering and Entrepreneurial Design (SEED), Scholarship Sharing, Omicron Delta Kappa (National Leadership Honor Society), and Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society).The Pre-Med Society at VCU is great for those wishing to one day attend Medical School. They have a number of annual events, including for volunteering, fundraising for worthy causes, and becoming a better candidate for a position. I was the financial officer of the organization for three years.The Society for Engineering and Entrepreneurial Design (SEED) is a great way to get involved with Engineering and Entrepreneurship at the collegiate level. VCU is awesome in that the school of engineering will help you bring your ideas all the way to the patent stage without taking the proceeds of it away from you, and SEED helps get you started on this journey. I was the Vice President of SEED for two years.Scholarship Sharing might sound like an organization about pooling scholarships, though it’s actually an organization designed to help you win Scholarships and Fellowships by guiding you to the scholarships that are most relevant to you as well as helping you apply. I personally won thousands of dollars worth of scholarships thanks to the detailed database of scholarships the president had built up over time (lots of hours of research went into it, I can tell you!). Nice thing here: you don’t have to be in the organization or even at VCU to take advantage of it! Just go to the website (scholarships here) and check out their database! I was the financial officer of this organization all four years I went to VCU.Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) is a great organization meant to help you with developing core leadership skills in preparation for your career. I personally didn’t do a lot with ODK, though they have events frequently and have a lot of administrative support.Tau Beta Pi (TBP) is a stellar honor society to join if you’re an engineer, and I thoroughly enjoyed the events we did. Networking, socials, skill-building, the VCU chapter had all of these, in addition to celebration Pi Day (3/14, get it? Because the rounded version of pi is 3.14? Haha, engineering humor). Definitely get involved with TBP if you find yourself pursuing an engineering major.These are just a few of the many organizations VCU has to offer, so go wild! You’ll want to attend the SOVO Fair when you go to VCU, as SOVO Fair is basically where all student organizations have tables out and you can find the groups that you would most enjoy joining. Start now in building the life you want. First is relationships. Divide everyone into those who are kind and generous and those who are not. If you want a life filled with love and appreciation, only associate with people who are. You will attract them if you always act that way yourself. When you can’t avoid those who are not, learn to set boundaries so they can’t hurt you. You can learn it by Googling or from books. Second is career. If you already have a goal, figure out the steps to get there. If you don’t have a goal, use your time to explore. There are many free educational programs online. One of the best is the Khan Academy—look it up. I don’t know if your parents will pay for college, but if not, you can explore free education.
