PDF Editor FAQ

What are the differences between the old 1040 EZ tax form and the new 1040 form?

1040 EZ is just for folks who take the Standard Deduction only and have no capital gains or Self Employment to report. No EIC except for yourself, no Child Tax credits no schedules to attach

What is the largest number of forms and schedules a person can have on their federal income tax return?

There are 89 different forms available on the IRS free-file-forms site. Depending how you count, anyway. I’m excluding “additional statement” forms (e.g.: Form 2441 Information statement), separate pages of the same form (e.g.: Form 8949, Page 1 and Page 2), different versions of the same form (e.g.: Schedule C, and Schedule C-EZ), forms normally printed together (e.g.: Form 2210 and Schedule AI), and multiple copies of the same form (e.g; Schedule SE for both spouses). I’ve also excluded Form 4868 and Form 1040-ES, which are not normally filed with the main return.I’m not sure that it is possible to use all 89 forms, as some may apply to mutually inconsistent situations. It would be tough to see how you could file Schedule EIC (Earned Income Credit) while also requiring Form 6251 (Alternative Minimum Tax); as the two have AGI requirements that do not overlap.I would guess it would be theoretically possible to use maybe 80 different forms in one filing, although such a filer would have a very, very interesting life. So would their tax preparer.

In what order do I prepare my tax forms?

The 1040 is your roadmap. Everything else is a helpful tangent. If you have simple taxes and were for some reason forced to file on paper instead of using the simple and often free software packages, and, most importantly, knew all the peculiar vocabulary, you could get by with just the base 1040.But from there most of us end up having to download one or more additional forms and worksheets (most of which, technically, are subsections, "schedules" of the 1040.) So if you had a small business, you'd start with the 1040, and then when there was something you couldn't answer, you'd end up on the Schedule C, and because you used it, you'd be forced to include it. If you had substantive capital gains or losses you couldn't fill out the 1040 without detouring through the Schedule D, which you would then attach. But as far as I can think of, everything you did on your other forms would be triggered by the 1040, and all the results would be copied onto a line on the 1040.Now, all that being said, the order you hit them will be in 1040 order, depending on your circumstance (because there are 1000 different forms). The sections are:Filing Status / ExemptionsIncome - so Schedule B (triggered by line 8-9 of the 1040), Schedule C (line 12), Schedule D (line 13), Schedule E (17)Adjustments - Schedule SE (27)Tax and Credits - Schedule A (40), Schedule 8812 (52)Other TaxPayments - Schedule EIC (66)So since your question makes me make a call, I'd say the above list means: 1040, then detours through a Filing Status worksheet maybe / definition of who's a dependent /etc., then if applicable B, C, D, E, SE, A, 8812, EIC. Okay, now that I do that, they're basically in Alphabetical Order (except A and the non-alpha ones.) But again, that's a highly dilated grand-aggregate rule of thumb.Did that answer your question?
