PDF Editor FAQ

What is the WE scandal surrounding Justin Trudeau about, and why is this scandal problematic?

Wow, substantial misrepresentation in both of the other answers.Yes, there was $900 million involved. However, WE Charity, which is a legitimate charity that gets an A- rating (mostly because there are transparency problems with charities that send money overseas due to local corruption, otherwise it would be a solid A+) was going to get $19 million to pay for its own expenses in administering those funds. The other $881 million was going to go to Canadian high school and university students who can’t get summer jobs this year to pay for alternative work they could do that isn’t “working at the Exhibition” or “working at a resort”. WE already runs a number of similar volunteer programs. The good news is that WE pulled out once the controversy erupted. As such, none of that money is going to get spent so students will spend the summer unemployed and do what I guess students do when they don’t have productive work. They’ve been encouraged to “volunteer” like… join a local fraternal organization.Okay, that’s from a recent production of West Side Story. So, the program was approved at the cabinet level. Justin Trudeau and Bill Morneau were both in the cabinet and both voted on the proposal. And that was a mistake. Justin Trudeau’s mother and brother have both received about $250,000 in total to speak at events sponsored by WE’s for-profit sister organization, which puts together motivational lectures, a bit like a TED talk.Morneau’s problem is a bit more serious. He’s done some work for WE Charity and they paid his travel expenses to go to events. However, that’s against the rules for cabinet ministers. He was supposed to reimburse them, but didn’t. It was a substantial amount - in excess of $40,000.As such, under the law, they were probably required to declare the conflict of interest and not vote on the proposal. On the other hand, it doesn’t appear that either Trudeau or Morneau, or anyone related to them, received any direct benefit from WE Charity or its related organizations. This is pretty much a sitution of the principals of WE sucking up to politicians in order to make sure any government money going to projects would come through them. In addition to working with the federal Liberals, the principals are also close to the Saskatchewan Party, which is the government in Saskatchewan and is fundamentally opposed to the Liberals. As such, saying this is “corruption” is a bit of a stretch. It clearly has bad optics and the rules are in place both to stop corruption and the appearance of corruption. This appears to be more of the latter.Of course, the reason why the $900 million wasn’t disbursed another way is because of coronavirus. The government realized there was going to be a massive problem with student unemployment this summer. If it were a regular government program, you would have an army of civil servants to receive the applications and disburse the funds. In addition, one of the reasons this seems to have been made public is because many in the civil service felt that the government just should have hired more civil service staff to administer the program. The problem with that is, like I said, WE Charity had actual staff available that has aministered such programs in the past and it would have taken time for the civil service to recruit and hire people, like in September.Of course, the real loser is Bill Morneau, but it appears this was a long time coming. Morneau’s my MP and, as Finance Minister, has pursued policies that keep taxes down for people like Bill Morneau (he’s worth about $40 million). When the coronavirus hit it appears Morneau was afraid to take on immediate debt and has been advocating austerity measures once we get back to work. The rest of the Liberal caucus and the NDP think that’s a terrible idea and that there will have to be more spending until employment is back to pre-coronavirus levels. When the WE scandal hit, it took a while for Morneau to admit he owed WE about $40,000 for the travel expenses and his excuse to the PM was that “he forgot”.Trudeau’s switch to Chrystia Freeland in the Finance portfolio is a big signal that Blue Liberals like Morneau can suck it and toe the party line that the government cares more about people’s welfare than attracting the votes of wealthier Canadians. It’s also a warning that she’s also going to be the next PM if Trudeau resigns. Freeland is to the left of Trudeau and before taking up Finance was in charge of ministries that dealt with U.S.-Canada relations. She’s as tough as nails and twice as smart. She’s also well liked by most Liberals and a lot of Canadians. Until this moment, Morneau was also a front-runner as Trudeau’s successor, but now he’s on the same road as Rona Ambrose from the Conservatives - has political capital but no will to use it.

Why might teens in private schools be more likely to volunteer than other teens?

The private schools in my area require “volunteer” or “community service” hours as a graduation requirement. The students fulfill the requirement by “volunteering” at places approved by the individual school: Humane Society, private elementary schools, food pantry and food distribution services, nursing home, hospitals, and other “worthy” places.Another reason is that many parents of private school students want their kids to get into prestigious colleges. Having solid volunteering(and being able to back that up)looks good on applications and resumes. And then, of course, the private school can boast that “During the 2017–2018 school year, our students volunteered XY,ABC hours in our community.”

How will taking a gap year after high school effect the college application and CV for an international student who wishes to pursue his UG abroad in a country like US?

As with most things in life, the answer depends on what you make of your gap year. I took a gap year before applying to colleges in the US and got admitted to a Top 10 university. I did solid volunteer work (research with an internationally approved organization) and an internship. Not to mention, I worked HARD on the SATs and my letters of recommendation. You should have a concrete story of what you did with your gap year. If you simply want to take time off, that’s fine, but it’s advisable to have at least one solid engagement to account for your time. Something productive you did with your free time. Community service, internships, jobs, start-ups, projects, anything really.I met a ton of international students during my time in the US, who had also taken gap years. They pretty much had 1–2 solid engagements to boot. And don’t worry, it’s tougher for international students to get admitted to these universities, but very manageable if you prepare early on.Feel free to reach out with further questions, if you need help with the college applications, or just to say hello.
