What benefits can we claim for mental health in the UK?

Depends on your situation with impact on your daily life, ability to work (in their eyes), housing etc. I think some might be effected by if you have a partner, their income, any dependents. They are pretty strict these days and its a notoriously difficult process to go through. Lots of people have to appeal decisions. I think the citizens advice bureau can help guide you. Check out their website. You can apply for personal independence payments (PIP) which about your daily needs and how you cope with them. You can get this regardless of other income. You'll get a huge form, if suggest getting guidance or support with completing it. You need to be very truthful but write in detail about how your mental illness effects your ability to do regular daily tasks like moving around, washing, dressing, cooking, eating etc. You'll be asked for any evidence to support this- letters, care plans, confirmation of treatment etc. Then you're most likely to have an interview to basically go through the same questions. If you can't work because if your mental illness you can try to claim universal credit. I think everywhere has changed over to this now (formerly ESA for this part). You can apply online. Again you'll need to answer loads of questions and supply any evidence to support this. After quite a while you'll have an interview about this too. On universal credit you can apply for the housing component at the same time, if you're eligible. This is the equivalent of housing benefit.Based on your income (from work or benefits) and Living situation you may get a reduction in council tax. You need to apply directly with them.I may have forgotten something… But I think that's everything. There is a government website about ‘what am I entitled to?’

If Huey Long had never been assassinated, what would he likely have done?

1935Throughout the United States, the global economic recession which has become known as the Great Depression affects the lives of millions of American citizens. Since 1929, personal income, consumption, tax revenue, profits, and prices have dropped, while international trade has plunged by over 50%. Unemployment in the U.S. has risen to 25% and in some countries has risen as high as 33%. Former President Herbert Hoover had done little to remedy the economic hardship and has been widely blamed for the onset of the depression. Incumbent President Franklin Delano Roosevelt after assuming office in 1933, had proposed a series of economic programs, financial reforms, and regulations known as the New Deal; providing support for farmers, the unemployed, youth, and the elderly. Also including new constraints and safeguards on the banking industry and efforts to re-inflate the economy after prices have fallen sharply.Meanwhile, in the Bayou State of Louisiana, a U.S. Senator has made headlines everywhere and is rising to prominence, Senator Huey Pierce Long Jr. (The Kingfish), a Democrat and de facto Dictator of Louisiana. In March 1933, Long offered a series of bills collectively known as “the Long Plan” for the distribution of wealth. The bill first proposed a new progressive tax code designed to cap personal fortunes at $100 million. Fortunes over $1 million would be taxed at 1%; fortunes over $2 million would be taxed at 2%, and so forth, up to a 100% tax on fortunes greater than $100 million. The second bill limited annual income to $1 million and the third bill capped individual inheritances at $5 million. In February 1934, Long introduced his Share Our Wealth plan over a nationwide radio broadcast. He proposes capping personal fortunes at $50 million and repeats his call to limit annual income to $1 million and inheritances to $5 million. (He also suggests reducing the cap on personal fortunes to $10 million - $15 million per individual, if necessary, and later lowers the cap to $5 million - $8 million in printed materials.) The resulting funds will be used to guarantee every family a basic household grant, or “household estate” as Long calls it, of $5,000 and a minimum annual income of $2,000 - 3,000, or one-third of the average family homestead value and income. Long supplements his plan with proposals for free college education and vocational training for all able students, old-age pensions, veterans’ benefits, federal assistance to farmers, public works projects, greater federal regulation of economic activity, a month’s vacation for every worker, and limiting the workweek to thirty hours to boost employment. He proposes a $10 billion land reclamation project to end the Dust Bowl. Long also promises free medical service and what he calls a “war on disease” led by the Mayo brothers. In his speech, Long uses populist language depicting the U.S. past as a lost paradise stolen by the rich, saying:God invited us all to come and eat and drink all we wanted. He smiled on our land and we grew crops of plenty to eat and wear. He showed us in the earth the iron and other things to make everything we wanted. He unfolded to us the secrets of science so that our work might be easy. God called: ‘Come to my feast.’ Then what happened? Rockefeller, Morgan, and their crowd stepped up and took enough for 120 million people and left only enough for 5 million for all the other 125 million to eat. And so many millions must go hungry and without these good things God gave us unless we call on them to put some of it back. The key planks of the Share Our Wealth platform include:No person will be allowed to accumulate a personal net worth of more than 300 times the average family fortune. A graduated capital levy tax will be assessed on all persons with a net worth exceeding $1 million.Annual incomes will be limited to $1 million and inheritances will be capped at $5.1 million.Every family is to be furnished with a homestead allowance of not less than one-third of the average family wealth of the country. Every family is to be guaranteed an annual family income of at least $2,000 to $2,500, or not less than one-third of the average annual family income in the United States. Yearly income, however, cannot exceed more than 300 times the size of the average family income. An old-age pension will be made available for all persons over 60.To balance agricultural production, the government will preserve/store surplus goods, abolishing the practice of destroying surplus food and other necessities due to lack of purchasing power.Veterans will be paid a pension and healthcare benefits.Free education and training for all students to have equal opportunities in all schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions for training in the professions and vocations of life. The raising of revenue and taxes for the support of this program is to come from the reduction of swollen fortunes from the top, as well as for the support of public works to give employment whenever there may be any slackening necessary in private enterprise.Even during his days as a traveling salesman, Long had confided to his wife that his planned career trajectory would begin with election to a minor state office, then governor, then senator, and ultimately President of the United States, announcing his candidacy via radio broadcast with his “Share Our Wealth” program as his platform. By the mid-1930s, he has greatly risen in stature to become a national figure. By the summer of 1935, Long’s Share Our Wealth clubs have 7.5 million members nationwide, garnering 25 million radio listeners and he receives 60,000 letters a week from supporters (more than the president). While addressing reporters in late Summer of 1935, the Kingfish proclaims:“I’ll tell you here and now that Franklin Roosevelt will not be the next President of the United States. If the Democrats nominate Roosevelt and the Republicans nominate Hoover, Huey Long will be your next President.”September 8, 1935 - Baton Rouge, LouisianaOn Sunday morning, Long travels to the State Capitol in order to pass a re-redistricting plan which will oust political opponent Judge Benjamin Henry Pavy. At 9:20 p.m., just after the passage of the bill effectively removing Pavy, Pavy’s son-in-law Carl Weiss approaches Long and raises a handgun from four feet (1.2 m) away. Long’s bodyguards, nicknamed the “Cossacks” or “Skullcrushers”, respond by firing at Weiss more than 60 times with their own pistols, killing him, before a shot could be fired. Long is hastily escorted down a flight of stairs and across the capitol grounds to safety.Although the attempt on his life shakes Long within, he is now ever determined to see his Presidential campaign through.Hoping to acquire as much public support as possible, Long sends a message to Roman Catholic priest and radio host, Father Charles E. Coughlin. A fiery sympathizer based in Michigan who reaches the ears of an estimated 30 million Americans through his weekly broadcasts, as well as the leader of the political organization known as the National Union for Social Justice. Which similarly to Senator Long’s Share Our Wealth program, calls for monetary reforms, nationalization of major industries and railroads, and protection of labor rights with its slogan: “Social Justice”. Both believing that President Roosevelt’s New Deal is plainly too inefficient to remedy the economic hardships the nation is currently going through. An admirer of the populist Kingfish, Father Coughlin promptly arranges a meeting between the two where the priest agrees to support Long. Holding many speeches together with Father Coughlin calling upon the American people in his radio broadcasts to support Huey Long for the presidency, often ending with the official slogan “Every Man a King (But No One Wears a Crown)”.Across the nation, Long’s popularity skyrockets, as news of his candidacy for the Democratic Presidential nomination spreads throughout the land, along with his successes over the years. Building bridges, hospitals, schools, roads where there were none previously, and free textbooks for elementary. And although his methods for his achievements are calls for concern to many, Huey Long allows his actions and achievements to speak for themselves.Within months, the Kingfish also acquires the support of notable actors, sports icons, and singers, most notably jazz singer Ina Ray Hutton and her all-girl orchestra, the Melodears. Long’s Share Our Wealth program also catches the attention of many politicians from both the Democratic and Republican parties, who have also grown weary of Roosevelt’s New Deal. Creating a solid base for the Kingfish among federal lines, and greatly boosting his popularity. Throughout the states, citizens are divided along different views; states nearest the coasts are in favor of the New Deal as they have benefited the most from it, while the more inland states particularly rural regions are in favor of Long’s Share Our Wealth program. Millions of citizens, mainly farmers and the rural poor join their local Share Our Wealth Society across America. Many view his Share Our Wealth proposal as an unworkable plan that threatens the reforms of President Roosevelt and the New Deal, especially by the right. Nonetheless, members of both parties along with politicians from both left and right are split between New Dealers and Share the Wealthers.1936As the 1936 election approaches, the Roosevelt administration grows increasingly concerned by Long’s popularity. As relations between the President and the Senator have broken down, the United States government attempts to use any/all information they have about Long to initiate a smear campaign against him. Labeling him a dangerous demagogue, appealing to the American people over their struggles of the Great Depression. Undermining Long’s authority in Louisiana as well as launching inquiries into the legality of his election, accusing him of fraud, voter intimidation, and abuse of power which led him to assume frighteningly dictatorial powers.Senator Long also launches a smear campaign of his own, detailing President Roosevelt’s highly socialist policies within his New Deal. An increase of lynchings towards African-Americans, as well as the mass relocation of Japanese-Americans to internment camps and the government coverup on the situation of the Holodomor in Ukraine by the Soviet Union and their refusal to act.June 23, 1936 - Democratic National ConventionDespite his aggressive campaigning throughout the nation and garnering millions of voters, by a very narrow margin, Huey Long loses the Democratic nomination to incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vice-President John N. Garner. In his acceptance speech on June 27th at the adjacent Franklin Field, as if to rub it in the face of the Kingfish, Roosevelt remarks:“This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny.”Although the news is disappointing, it was actually expected. Although some suspect this to be the end of the Kingfish, this defeat is unknowingly playing right into Senator Long’s contingency plan. Long challenged Roosevelt for the 1936 Democratic nomination knowing he would lose, but gain valuable publicity in the process. Having become disillusioned with Democratic party politics and the ineffectiveness of their policies, as a result, Huey Long breaks from the Democratic Party. However, with his departure, many members of the Democratic Party in favor of the Share Our Wealth plan also split from the party. Additionally, Long uses his ties to the Republican Party to draw supporters away from the party, essentially splitting both parties from within.Father Coughlin along with Iowa agrarian radical Milo Reno; and other dissidents like Francis Townsend, William Lemke, and the remnants of the End Poverty in California movement have recently formed a new political movement known as the Union Party. To which Father Coughlin’s National Union for Social Justice had recently merged with. The leaders of the party, after witnessing Long’s narrow defeat for the nomination, invite the Kingfish to either join their movement or continue his campaign with their support. Now with wide support from members of both the Democratic and Republican parties and millions of American citizens, Senator Long remains ever determined to win the election. Announcing that he will continue his bid for the Presidency as a third-party candidate with Oscar Kelly Allen Sr. as his running-mate, using his Share Our Wealth plan as his basis.Fairly soon, Long’s support comes to overshadow both Democrat Franklin Roosevelt in many states and Republican Alf Landon, who by this point only holds major support in the rural northeast. With support from the Union Party and Share Our Wealth Societies, Senator Long holds the greatest poll in traditional, industrial, and business-based communities, drawing overwhelming support from New York City and Boston which are strongholds for Americans skeptical of the New Deal. The south is split between those closest to the coast who are more sympathetic to Roosevelt as they have benefitted most through his New Deal and those further inland who have endured the brunt of the Great Depression who are more sympathetic to Huey Long.November 3, 1936 - Election DayThe day the American people have been waiting for has arrived. A total of 266 Electoral College votes are required to win this election. Republican candidate Alf Landon only manages to garner support in the northeast, winning the states of Maine and Vermont with a total of eight electoral college votes. Long running on a third-party ticket, wins about four million votes (about 10% of the electorate). Polling more than 3,000,000 votes, having the balance of power in the 1936 election. Commanding upwards of 100,000 votes in New York State, a pivotal state in any national election, with all sides knowing that a vote of that size could easily mean the difference between victory and defeat ... That number of votes mostly comes from supporters of the Democratic Party which spells disaster for Roosevelt. The incumbent President manages to acquire and hold on to states that have largely benefitted from the New Deal and those which he holds an economic monopoly over.By an overwhelming margin with 311 Electoral College votes, Senator Huey Pierce Long Jr. wins the 1936 Presidential Election. To many the news comes a shock, to others, it is a sign of hope and change.January 20, 1937 - Inauguration DayIn the early morning, President-Elect Long, accompanied by a marching band and a massive crowd of supporters, march towards the United States Capitol for his inauguration. There, he is sworn in on the very Bible his father had read to him, his brothers and sisters, becoming the 33rd President of the United States.Within moments of his inauguration, President Huey Long holds a press conference detailing his nomination picks for his executive cabinet:Secretary of State: William Edgar BorahSecretary of the Treasury: James J. CouzensSecretary of War: Smedley ButlerSecretary of the Navy: Franklin D. RooseveltAttorney General: Frank MurphySecretary of the Interior: Lytle BrownSecretary of Commerce: Herbert HooverSecretary of Labor: Edward KeatingUpon assuming office, President Long’s first main focus is the economy, putting his Share Our Wealth plan into action.Within his first few weeks in power, President Long presses the limits of presidential power in the name of undoing the supposed damage done by the New Deal, which overtime is viewed by many as having been more detrimental than beneficial. As well as ensuring security from enemies both foreign and domestic. Publishing his second autobiography My First Days in the White House in which he details his plans throughout his first presidential termGradually the U.S. economy improves, with inheritance and incomes being capped, while a policy for redistribution of wealth is passed in order for every family to be guaranteed an allowance of $2,000. Veterans and the elderly are paid a full pension with healthcare benefits. New jobs and education opportunities are created for the lower classes, while the wealthy are made to pay their fair share of taxes. American citizens are ensured an automobile, a radio, and a house valued at $5,000. Although his policies seem to benefit the American people, his means of drafting and pressing bills through the Legislative Branch despite not having the official authority to do so, and reorganizing the national governing structure to bolster his influence, are calls for concern to some who come to view the Kingfish as a dictator. Although some call his policies Communist, President Long assures the public that his Share Our Wealth plan is the nation’s best defense against Communism and that he holds his idea of Every Man a King deep in his heart. On the international stage, as the situations heat up in Europe and East Asia, the U.S. government looks to distance itself from any foreign conflicts. Although some within the government look to protect American interests in these regions, President Long looking to maintain peace and stability asks for negotiations with Germany and Japan. Assuring the nations that the United States will not involve itself with either of their affairs should they escalate, in exchange that American assets in both Europe and Asia remain untouched and allow for American goods to be sold in the European and Chinese markets, and to further improve diplomatic and economic relations.Pursuing not allegiance but cooperation between the United States, German Reich, Kingdom of Italy, and the Empire of Japan in order to preserve the sovereignty of the United States. With the steady economic growth of the U.S, the nation vastly improves and expands its military for the sake of defense, as suggested by Secretary of War Major General Smedley Butler, Secretary of the Navy Franklin Roosevelt as well as notable military leaders such as General Douglas MacArthur and George S. Patton. The United States Armed Forces are underfunded, underequipped with obsolete equipment and small in size. Military personnel such as sailors, pilots, and codebreakers are among the best in the world, but lack of proper funding, training and modern equipment greatly reduce efficiency. With peace achieved with Europe and Asia, the Empire of Japan is able to continue its war against the Republic of China without fear of an oil embargo or economic sanctions. While in Europe, Germany continues to annex Austria and the Sudetenland, later attempting to negotiate with the Second Polish Republic over claim to the Free City fo Danzig. However this time, instead of allowing Germany to annex the region, Poland with support from the United Kingdom and French Third Republic, refuses under threat of war.By September 1939, the situation becomes too much to bear and Germany invades Poland, and as promised, Great Britain and France declare war on Germany. In Washington, President Long announces that despite the hardships that Europe and East Asia face, the United States will do the utmost to maintain its neutrality. Ensuring that no more American soldiers will have to die in another foreign war, and will instead focus all its resources on rebuilding the nation towards a greater, brighter future. The Kingfish’s calls for isolation and national development are met with great enthusiasm from the America First Committee, the German American Bund and the American people.By 1940, the Great Depression has largely subsided throughout the United States, as infrastructure and the economy have vastly improved and a deep sense of pride is bolstered within the American people. President Long having funneled sufficient executive power to pass the necessary policies for his program as well as public support has become the de facto Dictator of the United States. While some often criticize his actions, the Kingfish has successfully built a benevolent dictatorship within America, one that benefits and serves the interests of the American people over those of a ruling council. A fact which contributes to his bid for re-election, winning by an overwhelming margin against Republican candidate Wendell Willkie. In Europe, with Poland the Low Countries and France occupied by Germany, Great Britain left with no allies is forced to negotiate an armistice with the German Reich and Kingdom of Italy. Meanwhile in Asia and the Pacific, the Empire of Japan seizes British, French and Dutch colonies in the region and makes steady progress in China.By the following year, the Axis Powers initiate their invasion of the Soviet Union. Although the United States remains neutral, President Long declares his support of the Axis and gives a short speech detailing the imminent fall of Communist Russia and the beginning of a great awakening. In the United States, a deep sense of patriotism covers the land, as the American people are united behind their right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. But there’s something belonging to others, there’s enough for all people to share. When it’s sunny June and December too, or in the wintertime or spring. There’ll be peace without end, every neighbor a friend. With Every Man a King.References: Huey Long - WikipediaShare Our Wealth - Wikipedia
