PDF Editor FAQ

What are some jobs that are much more difficult than people think?

Nurses and human resource (HR) professionals. On the former, I’ve dated a couple of nurses and one of those relationships was with a young woman who worked in a pediatric oncology ward (i.e. children with cancer). I’ll leave it to you to imagine the sheer mental strain of that, to watch children playing innocently everyday even as they did so in pitiful ignorance that death stood in wait to take their souls, only a few months if not weeks away. And while people understand the intelligence required to be a medical professional, what is often only partially appreciated is the nerve needed to cope with it.At this point I’ll mention as a former physician that while that profession command the highest level of respect in the public sphere, nurses are often not nearly as appreciated as they richly deserve, not in terms of their service but in terms of the emotional resilience and presence of mind required to do that job well. This isn’t like a factory assembly line you know, where if a piece is irretrievably defective, you cast it away on the scrap heap, shrug and move on to the next one in the line. Now I’ll grant that my ex’s department was particularly strenuous in emotional terms, and it’s not like people think a nurse’s job is easy, but more like they don’t realize how tough it can be, especially given how nurses are more closely associated with personal day-to-day care than doctors are and are therefore even more likely to be mentally affected by the suffering of patients under their care.Praise the kindness of their hearts by all means but do not forget at the same time how tough their stomachs and sharp their minds need to be. In my opinion, theirs is one of the most under-appreciated professions.Onto the latter now. My younger sister is an HR professional. And unlike nursing which is at least deeply respected if rather underestimated, HR falls squarely in the category of what many, if not most people think of as being a lightweight job. And yes, there are HR professionals who do little more than administrative stuff like looking up payroll, vacation time or checking on company policy manuals but there are several fields of specialization under than large tent of a company function (much like with others like finance or operations). For about two years, my sister was in charge of assisting company managers in laying off people at this large corporation. You know when people are called by their managers to be given the pink slip and there’s an HR person in the room? Yeah, that was her.The worst part? It was the department managers who made the decisions to fire (for understandable reasons since those employees were in their domain of expertise) but it is HR which is the unfortunate harbinger of that bad news.My little sister would tell me stuff like -“I saw this guy in the elevator today and he looked so cheerfully optimistic, asking me how I was doing. And it felt awful because little does he know that they’re going to lay him off at the end of this week.”And that one above was one of the lighter ones! Some of the other cases were depressing as hell. Like this guy who on being fired asked to forego his six months of severance pay in exchange for health insurance for a year instead of six months after his last day (company policy was six months each of pay and insurance after being laid off) - because his little daughter had cancer and needed the health insurance. Good effing lord man! Personally speaking as thick skinned and stress resistant as I am, I’d have a really hard time coping with that kind of stuff. There were times when she’d say that some fifteen to twenty people would be laid off in the next month and she had to attend all of those meetings along with their managers to deliver the bad news. And how little she was looking forward to going to work in that period. To watch people have that thousand yard stare when they see their manager with the HR person in the room and realize that this is it, it’s their last day at the job. Made all the worse if they are middle aged and know how hard it will be to find another job at an equivalent level. In the case of both professions, people don’t realize how strong of a stomach is needed AND an empathetic disposition on top of that. There are many who have one of those two but very few who have both.I used to tell both my ex and my sister that the fact that they hurt so much about seeing children suffer or people being laid off, ironically made them the precise kinds of persons suited for those professions.People think it’s a sign of toughness to get hardened to suffering. Yes it is, I’ll tell you what’s far more difficult .It is to resist the desensitization which you risk developing so easily when you’ve seen enough. It takes an even stronger soul for that.

Should off-duty police officers be held to a higher standard in civilization than everyday citizens?

They are. How many jobs do you know of where your company policy manual specifically states you can be fired for “conduct unbecoming”? How many don't bother defining that conduct so that as many employees as possible can be reprimanded or terminated on the whim of administration?

Can human resources be outsourced?

CocoDoc is a great option for people who need flexibility with their digital signatures. After being exposed to it by my business coach, I decided to look into CocoDoc and was THRILLED that they had an unlimited free option with many of the same features that I had seen in DocuSign. This software is easy-to-use and intuitive, and I'm really grateful that I came across it.
