PDF Editor FAQ

Is being a girl scout worthwhile the cause for my child to invest time in?

Is being a girl scout worthwhile the cause for my child to invest time in?Leah Johnson gives the most heart felt and qualified answer to this question. She has the experience to give you the best answer.Lee Amon also provides a good answer supporting scouting principles in general.I am not going to rehash their answers, I am going to give you my feedback as an active Scouter and BSA volunteer.Your child will only get as much from the program as you put into it. Scouting, whether BSA or GSUSA is only going to be a worthwhile time investment for your child if s/he has an active parent participating with her or him.Don’t sit on the sidelines and watch, become active and build a stronger relationship with your child through the scouting program you choose. You posted this question anonymously so I can’t tell you too much; however, my experience with Girl Scouts is not an positive as Leah’s. Granted I am a man and I decided that I wanted to join when my 10 year old daughter asked to join. My leader application with our local Council was denied and no reason was given. However, given the number of detailed background checks I have had done for work, and the background checks done by BSA for several positions I have held there only one “issue” can appear to explain it.I am a man.Not every GSUSA Council takes the perspective that men are trouble, but at least some of them do. I have had conversations with fathers (on Quora and other social media) that have all described problems with attempting to register to participate as their daughter’s troop leader.I even had one father describe to me a scenario where the person that reviewed his application actually told in that the only reason a man would want to be a girl scout troop leader is because he wanted to look at young girls. But, as I said, not every Council is that way. I have had a few fathers that had no problems becoming their daughter’s troop leader.Anyway, choose a program that both you and your child can participate in and be active. Help your child learn, grow and develop into a productive, confident citizen. the success of the program (and your child) is only as good as the effort YOU put into it.
