No one even paused to look at the data and maybe think that things looked out of whack?I mean, really look at it.Isn’t it weird that the unemployment rate which had been hovering around 2–3% for the last 4 decades suddenly tripled in a single year?Did I miss a global recession while doped up?Isn’t this only a “draft report”?Has there been a change in the methodology?What is the guarantee that the numbers reported by Business Standard are correct?Why is there such a drastic difference between what is reported here and the ILO (International Labor Organization) estimates?This looks like another Rafale level brouhaha cooked up by the media and the opposition in order to malign the current government just months before the LS elections.

It stated that the country's unemployment rate stood at a 45-year-high — based the leaked report of National Sample Survey Office Survey. The assessment conducted from between 2017 and June 2018, showed an unemployment rate of 6.1 percent.However as expected the entire BJP Government and the RW ecosystem either denied or discredited the report.The Prime Minister of India PM Modi claimed that the problem was not about the lack of jobs, but rather about the lack of available data on jobs.[1]Citing data from provident fund, Income Tax filings and National Pension System (NPS), Prime Minister on Thursday said crores of new jobs have been created in the formal and unorganised sectors, including transport, hotels and infrastructure, although this may not be captured in official data.[2]Another prominent minister expressed similar sentiments and added that more jobs were created. He too reiterated the official line that the job data was the problem, not the jobs.India’s problem is not jobs but the missing data on jobs. He denied that the unemployment was widespread in India. In fact, he claimed that the country was creating 7 million jobs a year.“You can’t be growing annually at 7.2 percent and saying that there are no jobs being created in the economy,” he said.[5]However, the worst part of was that one of the cabinet ministers in the government denied the existence of the report. They even tired to suppress the report. Imagine that!“There is no such report,” said India’s energy minister Dharmendra Pradhan on April 12, 2019, about a leaked National Sample Survey Office report that said unemployment in India was at a 45-year high.[6]As a mark of protest, NSSO Chairman, Mohanan and NSSO member, JV Meenakshi resigned over the government's refusal to publish the NSSO report.Unhappy with the development, Kaushik Basu, Professor of economics at Cornell University and the former chief economist of the World Bank wrote a scathing piece in The Washington Post.India Can Hide Unemployment Data, but Not the Truth. Not to mention, the way social media went about dismantling the report and even calling NSSO’s chief a Congress stooge. It is clear that government buried the report to avoid embarrassment and a potential blow back in elections.Better Late than Never.Now, the cat finally out of the bag. The report released by the center shows that the unemployment is indeed record high - the worst in four decades.Unemployment in the country stood at 6.1% of the total labour force in 2017-’18, the highest in 45 years, according to a report released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Friday. This confirms the data leaked in the media in January after the government was accused of covering up the report.The data showed that 7.8% of all employable youth in urban areas were jobless, while the figure was 5.3% in rural areas. Joblessness among men stood at 6.2%, while it was 5.7% in the case of women.The data was published in the annual report of the Periodic Labour Force Survey for 2017-’18 conducted by the National Sample Survey Office.[8]It is time for the government to accept that the job crisis is real. They should not obfuscate the issue by citing data authenticity. Now that the elections are over and the government is back with a clear and powerful mandate, I expect it to make unemployment a top priority. They have disappointed job seekers in the past.
