I am a member of a minority group on two counts. I’m a woman and I’m deaf.Of those two characteristics, one has had by far a much bigger impact on my life. Yet only one enjoys popular support.Of course, if you asked, woke people would undoubtedly vocally support deaf rights and the rights of disabled people. But they don’t support it whole heartedly, unprompted. By that I mean, there’s no clamouring over a “deaf pay gap”, and I would be very surprised if there isn’t one if someone looks. There’s was lots of noise over a very modest saving on VAT for tampons. Not a peep on VAT for hearing aids, which are only partially exempt from VAT. No counting of deaf CEOs.Lots and lots of noise about ethnic minorities and COVID. Now of course if there’s a genuine discrepancy not explained by social class it deserves attention. But what do deaf people get? If you can’t wear a mask you should stay home.Companions of deaf people are exempt from mask wearing to aid communication. Get over it. People want to further marginalise deaf people, want them to stay at home for an entire year? If anyone even hinted at a similar solution to the different COVID burden shouldered by ethnic minorities, that they should cut themselves off from society and stay at home, there’d be more riots. Deaf people, and disabled people who can’t wear masks? Nope, just stay home. Don’t care.So, my thoughts are cynical. I think diversity quotas and associated agendas are a facile solution to a problem for selected groups, not all marginalised groups. And such people are concerned only where the solution is easy.I also don’t like to be defined by these narrow categories, so I’ll just add here I’m a mother, wife, love dogs and ride a motorbike :)
