PDF Editor FAQ

Have you ever been pregnant shamed? What was said to you and how did you respond?

Yes, twice! The first time, I was 32 weeks along, and had taken on a lot of water weight (found out the following week I actually had pre-eclampsia!). I was running a large meeting with a client when the baby kicked so hard that some people in the audience actually saw it from the back of the room. I make a small “oof!” sound and placed my hand on my belly. “Sorry, that was a big one,” I interrupted myself for a moment. One of my main contacts, sitting on the dias while I spoke, loudly announced, “Oh my, you’re EXPECTING? I just thought you were incredibly obese! You know, you should really control your food intake, because you’ll never lose all that extra weight.” Seriously. As I was speaking to a room of 100 people. I was so ashamed. The second time was by my OB/GYN, who a week after the above incident actually shook her finger at me for failing to comply with her “orders” to lower my blood pressure. Not for taking any particular measure to do so - I followed her orders exactly - but because her prescribed course of action failed to lower my blood pressure. As if I could just make my blood pressure lower if I thought about it long and hard.Of course, after I went to another doc the next day, I was immediately put on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy.

What was your House M.D. moment (when you correctly diagnosed a rare disease)?

Many years ago, my late father (an ophthalmic surgeon) was semi-retired and well into his 60s. It had been many years (the late 1940s) since he had done any real general practitioner work, but he did try to keep current on a wide range of medical topics. One of his friends from medical school, John, by then a retired Ob/Gyn (they were in same year, and John had delivered me) was visiting for several days. At lunch one day, John mentioned that he was suffering from renal colic. My father immediate said “It’s probably the amount of mustard you’re using.” John had put quite a bit on some ham on his plate. Dad then reminded him of a lecture they had both taken when mustard had been mentioned (only about 40 years before!) as a renal irritant. After some discussion, John decided that he should limit his mustard intake (he did like mustard) to see what happened. Apparently that fixed the problem.Dad had a powerful memory, which came in handy from time to time.

I bleed a lot during periods. How can I replenish the blood?

Good answers here, but also be sure you are hydrating well (drinking plenty of water). Unless you have some kind of pathology/abnormality or are feeling some adverse effects (fatigue, etc), your body knows what to do. Too much iron (especially without adequate water intake) can create its own problems. I know it can feel like you're losing a lot of blood, but a normal period, even a heavy-normal period doesn't add up to much. If you are concerned, talk to your family doctor, nurse, or OB-GYN.
