This is one that I thought was really weird.I worked at a pizza place that was a sit down restaurant, but also did orders for pick-up and delivery. (As many pizza restaurants do.)Sometimes, the dining room would be almost empty, but the kitchen would be slammed, because there were a lot of to-go orders and delivery orders. Occasionally, I would have to apologize if a table’s order was taking a long time, and explain that even though it didn’t look like things were busy, the kitchen was overwhelmed with delivery/pick-up orders.People were usually understanding about this, or even exclaim “Oh, that explains why there’s a wait. I didn’t even think about delivery orders.”However, one time I got this response:Him: “What are you talking about? Do you mean to tell me, that you people are cooking delivery orders before you cook the restaurant orders?”Me: “Well, the system is electronic, sir. The kitchen receives orders as soon as they have been placed. If someone calls in and orders a delivery, then that goes into the system as soon as the order is placed. If you come into the restaurant and order food after that, then that will get into the system after, and the kitchen makes all the food in the order that it goes into the system.”Him: “So, if I order my food after a delivery order, then my food won’t be ready until after the delivery order is ready?”Me: “Well, the delivery pizzas might be ready, but they still need to be delivered. However, yes, basically, they make food in the order that the food was requested.”Him: “So, you don’t put dine-in orders at the front of the line? How could you possibly not serve people sitting and dining in your restaurant before you serve people who simply called in an order?”Me: “Well, during the dinner rush, lots of people come in to dine in. If the kitchen didn’t start cooking delivery orders until all the dine-in orders were done, our delivery time would be several hours.”Him: “Good! They should have to wait! If they can’t be bothered to get dressed and come into the actual restaurant, then why should they be rewarded with the same service? If my order won’t be put before all the delivery orders, then why should I bother to come in at all? Why not just order my food to be delivered?”Me: “I don’t know what to tell you sir. Would you like me to express your complaint to my manager, and ask him if he will change this policy?”Him: “Yes, this needs to be changed. All restaurant orders should immediately go to the front of the line. People sitting comfortably at home can wait.”Me: “What about people who are getting food to-go?”Him: “They should wait, too. If you are a restaurant, then your very first priority should be to provide food to people sitting in your restaurant. If those people can’t be bothered to sit down inside the restaurant and eat the food, then they shouldn’t be as much of a concern.”…Silly me, all this time I had thought people who PAY for food, should receive that food within a reasonable amount of time. Apparently, the fact that they paid the same price (more if they ordered delivery) does not mean that they get the same service. You only get good service if I get the pleasure of physically watching you eat the food. If you’re going to eat it in your home, then you can just wait. That sounds like a fantastic business model…
