The court ruled that 50,000 people who sent in absentee ballot applications will have to send in 50,000 more identical applications.Iowa mailed applications forms to registered voters so that they could apply for absentee ballots. To make it easier, some counties pre-filled out the voter’s name, address, and voter ID number, one that few voters know.The Trump Campaign sued in 3 counties objecting to the applications because of the voter ID number, arguing that someone who somehow obtained the application could send it in and vote illegally (of course, they would have the problem that the name and address was already filled in too). If someone doesn’t know their voter ID number, they can just call the county and ask; they don’t need ID. The argument seems totally nonsensical to me.The judge issued a temporary injunction saying all those who applied for absentee ballots will have to do it again. And since these people already have their voter ID now, what possible end is served by making them submit the same form a second time with the same information? The only effect is to make it harder for people in Iowa to vote by mail, period.I liken this lawsuit to the one Trump filed in Florida (and won) objecting to postage-paid reply envelopes.These have nothing to do with voting integrity, but with making it harder to vote; and because polls show that Biden voters are 3 times more likely to vote by mail than Trump voters, the lawsuits are nothing more than attempts to tip the scales towards Trump.I hope this temporary ruling by Iowa district judge Ian K. Thornhill will be overturned.The actual number of ballots affected is somewhere between 30,000 and 140,000. 50,000 is just one estimate.
