Almost feels like cheating to mention Alabama senator Doug Jones.He seems like a nice enough guy, but the fact that he’s a Democrat representing one of the most staunchly Republican states in the union is a bit of a fluke. Had he run against anyone who had not been mired in scandal involving sexual misconduct with minors, he would have just been a footnote. Instead he ran against disgraced former Chief Justice Roy Moore - who also had the distinction of being forcibly removed from his position not once, but twice.In spite of all that, Jones won the special election by a slim margin of 49.97 - 48.34%.Now, while Jones has the advantage of incumbency on his side, he no longer has the luxury of running against a deeply flawed candidate. His opponent is a relatively uncontroversial candidate who is showing a healthy lead in polling match-ups. Barring some kind of unexpected surprise, Senator Jones’ tenure is going to come to an end in 2021.But at least now he’ll be remembered as the Democrat who represented ruby red Alabama for a little while, and not just a footnote in a long line of Democratic losses in that state.
