My sister studies in a reputed business school where she joined last year.So she was attending one of her class virtually where a particular teacher who identified himself as leftist was teaching a economics course.For many classes, instead of teaching, he started blabbering about how harmful capitalism, how industrialists loot and what not, the same old tune that the freeloaders sing.Fed up, my sister and some students planned to raise their voice, albeit in group to avoid being a target for the teacher.When that teacher started his rant, these people asked few things.They asked “ Sir how many communist companies will come for placement’That guy was flabbergasted but still tried to blabber. They again asked the same thing. Then they highlighted that the Institute is known not only for the education but the kind of opportunities that it provides to students in industry, in association with large number of firms.If those firms stop coming, the ranking and status of the college will go down, and so will number of students, if no firm comes, the batch itself will be empty. And if there are no students, no fees and if no fees and students then no services will be needed from you. So you and other teachers will be out of job.So it is corporates and the students who want to have a career in corporates that are supporting your employment, then how come it is bad. OK, I'm on the faculty at BYU-Hawaii and since the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) is on our campus, I'll take a swing at this question. The PCC is the number one cash attraction (as opposed to a free attraction) in the State of Hawaii and provides an exceptional value and wonderful experience to travelers from all over the world.So, why is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints such a major player in the Hawaiian tourism industry?In 1865, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints purchased the Laie Plantation to provide a gathering place for Hawaiian converts to the church. To this date the Church owns and manages about 7,000 acres of land in and around Laie. See, Hawaii Reserves, Inc. In 1919, a temple was built in Laie, it was the 5th temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first to be dedicated outside of Utah. A temple represents a huge investment by the church and members and generally signals a permanent presence. This early temple is evidence of the strong influence that Hawaiian culture and members have had on the Church of Jesus Christ and its development.In the 1950's the church built a college on part of their land for the purpose of providing a higher education to students from all over the Pacific. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints operates high schools in several Pacific Island nations and strives to provide educational opportunities to all its members. Laie is a long way from Honolulu and because the members in that area needed jobs and money for their families, they had a tradition of providing a Hukilau (fishing with a net) and luau for tourists. It was this tradition, stepped up and with some serious investment by the Church, and some land from the Church college that became the PCC. We recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the PCC.The college students needed money, as did the townfolk, and the answer was to create a tourist attraction and to work very, very hard. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints take responsibility for themselves and the PCC represents one of the most successful examples of this--another being the State of Utah. The PCC does pay taxes as a for-profit institution.We have students at BYUH that come from all over the world but primarily from Oceania and Asia. These students finance their education by working as dancers, tour guides, food service, accountants, security, sales, and every conceivable job that is provided by a high-volume tourist attraction. The future of tutoring is going to accompany an exciting chain of developments. With education and technology evolving so quickly, it's clear tutoring will undergo major evolution as well. Soon, students in need of tutoring will have spent their entire lives connected. Adept and well-designed online learning platforms will find success, while platforms that fail to keep up with the kids will struggle.Mastery learning and one-on-one mentorship will emerge as important ways to produce high levels of academic achievement.
