PDF Editor FAQ

Can NYPD cops afford to live in New York City?

A lot do not live in NYC as it is a general rule for most professions that you do not eat where you shit…. The pay scale for NYC patrolman is stated on a blue instructions manual and in the various NYC precincts that you can see binders hanging on the wall you can ask to look thru.NYC Police Cadets make about USD 38,000 (upon hire)NYC Patrolman / Officers make about USD 42,000 (6 percent annual adjusted increments topping out at USD 72,000)NYC Patrolman (with 3 stripes on their sleeves (five years of service) like half a chevron for sergeants) make about USD 78,000NYC Patrol Supervisor / Sergeant makes about USD 79,000NYC Police Lieutenant (white shirt) make about USD 90,000 (executive officer of a precinct and has a charge card)NYC Police Captain (white shirt) makes about USD 105,000 (commanding officer of a precinct - usually two per precinct for each shift of the day). THIS IS ALSO THE LEVEL WHERE YOU CAN FINALLY LOSE THE 15 LB BELT WEIGHT AND ONLY CARRY A REVOLVER WHEN YOU LEAVE THE OFFICE. I DON’T THINK EVEN LIEUTENANTS CAN DO THAT CAUSE THE ENTIRE BELT IS PART OF YOUR UNIFORM AND IF HE OR SHE IS THE EXECUTIVE OR HIGHEST RANKING OFFICER.. THEY NEED TO HAVE THAT BEAST OF A RADIO ON THEIR POSSESSION SINCE THAT RADIO HAS QUITE SOME RANGE. IT IS A TWO WAY RADIO. IT IS PROBLEMATIC IF SOMEONE JUMPED THE PRECINCT AND YOU ARE NOT ARMED. ASIDE FROM THE DETECTIVES, USUALLY THE LIEUTENANT OR AT MOST ONE OR TWO OTHER PEOPLE ARE ALONE IN THE PRECINCT AT NIGHT. THERE MAY BE OTHER PEOPLE WORKING OUT OR AT THE RANGE OR THE SHOWERS BUT THE DOORS ARE LOCKED.NYC Police Deputy Inspector (white shirt, usually at HQ or Patrol Borough Manhattan North, PBMS, PBQ, PBB, PBSI, PBBRONX) usually make about USD 110 - 130KNYC Deputy Inspector (white shirt, usually assigned a squad command like Transit Police or T&LC police or Emergency Services Unit or Traffic or NYC Schools) usually make upwards of USD 150kNYC Deputy Chief of Police usually assigned to oversea squad commands or “operational priority areas” like community policing or intelligence unit usually make USD 180k +NYC Chief of Police (usually head of the department) like Chief of Detectives, Chief of Patrol, Chief of Asset Control (Vehicles, Departmental Arms, Helicopters, Stationary, Uniforms) usually make USD 210+, Chief of Internal AffairsNYC Police Commissioner usually make USD 1 million +Those salaries were in the days of Howard Safir as police commissioner. Salaries are probably higher now.In addition, all active patrol cops get 24/7 availability pay (essentially their taxes get refunded to them in exchange for them being on call at any time). Each level also have their own union, like the Patrolmen Benevolent Association of NY, NJ, Sergeant Benevolent Association, Lieutenant Benevolent Association, Captain’s Endowment Association that negotiates on their behalf.Patrolmen get minimum 3 hour call back pay and I think they upped it to 4 hours so even if you finish court in 1/2 an hour you still get paid 1 1/2 times for 4 hours of service. You also get laundromat coupons to use for your dry cleaning of your uniform that you can use for your personal clothing. You get free use of the MTA bus and train system by showing your shield and ID as it protects the people and give a police presence so that saves you about USD 90 a month on a MTA subway pass. Also, you get free batteries for your flash light and free ammunition (Union Metallic Cartridge or Federal or CCI) for your side arm qualification and free use of private ranges around the city of New York by showing shield and ID. Thats a good USD 600 per month membership waived since parking is usually included with a lot of these range memberships. You get a full sized departmental unmarked sedan to drive home if you are a Captain of a precinct and gas is paid for and so is insurance. You get a laminated tamper proof parking permit (it has a number that you can radio in to check and it is signed by the Commanding Officer of the Patrol Borough that every cadet and his mother knows as they have to salute the gold cap that comes around) that allows you to park pretty much anywhere that you deem reasonable. You get a 80 percent pension after 20 or 25 years of service depending on which bargaining unit you belong to. Alot of cops can retire from NYC and go work at Rockland Country or NYS Thruway and make an additional 80 k so that is an easy 150k+.They used to pay for your pager service and device in case you are called back under the NY Defense Authorization Act of 1964 or 1969 and that is the most annoying part that happens every Thanksgiving Day Parade, every Christmas Parade, every Saint Patricks Day, every New Year’s Eve, Every Cinco D Mayo, Every 4 th of July and last I met up with some buddies…. apparently every time they decide to have an active shooter drill or some sort of other drill. So pretty much every two months give or take. That being said, you don’t get much time for leave of absence or your two weeks leave that you can cash in for pay since almost no one gets to use it. You have to get commanding officer of the precinct to approve your leave and usually you have a hard enough time getting it to him or her since it goes to your Patrol Supervisor to the Shift Supervisor (Lieutenant) to the Executive Officer (Lieutenant) to the Commanding Officer (Captain). I think you have to give three weeks notice and I’m not sure if that has changed. They were also pushing the old timers from before to get at least a two-year degree so they were paying for classes at the City College of New York or similar CUNY owned schools. You can get a new set of uniforms and vest every two years (3 uniforms and 1 jacket and five turtle necks). Shoes are out of your own pocket so that sucks as steel toed shoes are expensive. They pay for one duty firearm and one off duty firearm (ankle). One flash light, knight stick or expandable baton, OC spray, CPR training, key ring leather, holster and pouches, one clip on tie (so you don’t get pulled into a shredder machine or attacked and strangled, one tie pin). You also get a hat and a rain coat and a safety vest and collar pins that tells your precinct /transit/esu etc and then your patrol borough. You get a black rubber band also for covering your shield #. Oh and you get a whistle for whatever reason since no body in that city stops to look even if you are hit by a bus. Oh and if you have a vehicle and are ESU or some other desired and highly paged person (like a Executive Officer) they pay for your red and white lights. Blue are for federal in NYS. Oh and when you are paged or what not or driving a departmental sedan. You don’t have to pay to go thru any of the tolls but just give them the vehicle number (which is a pain in the ass since these vehicles do not have NYS registration on the windshield or glove box) and you have to look above the vehicle or get out of the vehicle when you are in between toll boths. There is usually only one that is attended and almost all the time the stupid EZ pass is missing or borrowed to another vehicle. You get one bike patrol collared tee shirt with one pair of shorts. You get one windbreaker (the same one that the Feds wear) but the NYPD or NYC POLICE ON THE BACK and PD on the front so its no use for wearing at one times). Since you will get stopped 800 times and asked for directions when you do not have a radio. You can get a replica badge made that they may or may not pay for depending which precinct you are attached to but no one really knows if you go to another precinct and get another expense sheet since you use the same six digit number (not your shield number). One goes on your jacket which is impossible to put on and one goes on your uniform and most get another for off duty as it is their bus or subway permit and it is impossible to put it on the tight plastic or leather ID holder. This is for the NYPD Transit, T&LC, Patrol Division… Howard Safir apparently announced that patrolmen who are willing to work in anti crime while being identified will get a pay raise to USD 87,000 and a detective specialist first class shield that looks like a sergeants shield.Oh and everytime reverend al sharpton or the pope or Prince Charles apparently appears, you get called back also.Academy last 16 weeks. Then you get out an are assigned to a precinct training officer (one who usually at least has five year stripe). NYC also has a good policy of 2 units per car so its good for responding to calls where you are out of public sight. That will also probably end up being your wingman, child’s god father or mother or best friend for years if you get along just like in the military. So its something to thing about. Also, its good cause sometimes after 8 hours of driving in that city you don’t feel like driving anymore and can switch around. Its also good if you get stuck directing traffic since you can alternate 1/2 hours before you freeze to death.NYC Marshals and NYC Sheriffs apparently get paid more since they are closer to city hall. I don’t know. I know one lady who left NYC PD before her pension was due to join ASPCA (they require the same level of sworn peace officer powers) and they are non-profit and do not have government immunity from civil suits so you have to have a stella record. Apparently NYC courts are also covered by PBA of NY and NJ but the Ed Koch People’s Court Officer is a white shirt and so he is in a different union. I’m sure he makes almost the same or more compared to the other actor or commentator that Judge Judy hires. I think it is 3 million.Yea, it is rumored that Transit (MTA subway makes USD 280k by the New York Post but I don’t buy it… its the same union and every precinct has a union rep at all times that you can complaint to and ask to transfer to… most won’t take it cause in the subway you are out of radio communications at times and even if you had radio, you may be 2 against more if you are stuck in a moving train or bus)… Housing is slightly better since you are dealing with familiar residents. Also you have to be on your feet 8 hours or more since you can’t sit down in public even if seats are available. A white shirt or patrol supervisor is supposed to sign your time sheet or log book every 4 hours and they will catch you. Also, because it is NYC, I know of NYC police officers who never had a driver license and can be transferred from patrol to transit or to other divisions until they get their driver license.. So if transit is really paying USD 280,000. Most cops would just get a DUI or surrender their license as an excuse to try and go into transit. You are also supposed to “make rounds” and go from car to car and this isn’t possible during rush hour so you can only switch cars every time the train stops and you are shoulder to shoulder with people who are apparently tired poor hurdled masses yearning to breathe free… and you can get stabbed without your partner seeing since it is shoulder to shoulder and EMT may not be available till the train stops and some stupid fool may decide to pull the emergency brakes.I heard of non-stop complaints about transit positions and know quite a few who switched out even recently after two weeks. So I doubt it is really USD 280k. Or everyone would jump at it. There are 21 year olds who don’t know any better fresh out of the academy.Oh and you have to be 21 to be a patrolman (used to be 19 for a while) till they realize that these guys may be asked to enforce or enter liquor establishments which causes a problem. You can enter the academy as old as 18 but I’m not sure what they do with the cadets they hired those days at 19. Probably put them in dispatch or answering phones or something.Oh.. and the NYPD has one of the highest drop out rate as most don’t know what its like to work in that city and they go to some other agency. Its always awake and something is always happening somewhere and it takes alot out of you, It really is a pretty good department to work for. They have everything from horses to aviation units or coast guard like units that they will pay for if you want to go in that area and look outstanding record wise. It was 44000 strong when I was there and I believe it is in excess of 60,000 now adding on all the other laws that have changed and adding on Port Authority cops (not transit). I guess some people are just not realizing that city can be claustrophobic or some times too busy for their liking. Oh and they also are quite unheard of in how generous they are with at least one person I know who went to Columbia at their expense. He was a sergeant I think… I didn’t know he was a supervisor till one day where his badge was showing thru his shirt. Its probably one of the best employers I’ve seen. In that sense it is bigger than the armies of most countries and probably bigger than some divisions of the military. They give you a booklet or binder that fits into your back pocket at the start and there are three to four laminated pages of 10-XX codes with 10–04 being received and acknowledged to 10–96 or 10–98 and these are not supposed to be told. Every code stands for something like lost person or larcaney or prisoner transport and the radio calls even for probably the least busy area Staten Island never stop with only three things said. Unit number or call sign… code.. location. So you can imagine how crazy it is to work there for even one month. It must be more stressful to work in communications than to be an air traffic controller at regan national or JFK. On and don’t be fooled by those apps on Android or iphone that claim to be police radio. They know from in the 1980s that lawyers, identity thieves and ambulance chasers listen in to these via radio shack police scanners and their radios are the most expensive thing that you will likely touch there. Each unit i was told cost about 12,000 and it is a bigger problem for you to lose a radio than for you to lose a car or a weapon. Those things also have the ability to broadcast your location the moment you push the PTT button and dispatch knows where you are even before GPS was widely available or even introduced 20 years later. So they will never really be lost for too long. Since social security numbers, driver licenses etc are communicated on these radios when they find someone with no ID or other wierd situations. Like McCulay Culkin lost in NYC. The channels you hear are a joke of the department where they probably tune it to NYC bus communications or something. The other channels are encrypted and trunking frequencies where it randomly switches frequencies from a selection of LAW ENFORCEMENT ONLY USE channels that are FCC regulated just long enough for a police scanner to never catch on so that must be quite expensive technology since it hasn’t been broken yet with no social security or other number breaches. The joke is thats why they call something a BUS over the radio. It is also good for career progression like if you were a patrol cop for 10 years and no longer want to run around every day and want to move into administration or school safety where it is a more fixed job… For when you are older and jumping in and out of a police interceptor 50 -100 times a day takes a toll on your knees. Many who enter at the academy dream of being a Federal agent and it is probably one of the best places to start off since they have liasions at every level and department liasing with the feds which is just across 1 PP known as 1 Federal Plaza. So you at least know how to get your feet in the door until you realize you would forgo three or more years of pension. In some cases, the NYPD pays way better than the Federal Service. For instance, untill 2004 or so… The President of the United States was paid a sum of no more than USD 200,000 when Howard Safir and others like Giuliani had to be making more. Its probably also a good thing that NYC unlike other states and cities keep their payscales private and no one really knows how much you make except probably the union and human resources. One more perk that they offer is legal assistance if you ever get in trouble with Internal Affairs or run into a divorce or something. They have something called a union rep that in most cases has been to court more than most lawyers and know the players quite well and their social securitiy numbers since IAB are also part of the union. In other matters, they refer you to some legal unit or something so that is another good thing. There are alot of other perks that I didn’t know about till recent. Like each mayor since the days of Giuliani and the police comissioner and those people who have NYS legislature drilled into their trunk and front grill medallions or the city equivalent have uniformed NYC Courts officers as chauffeurs. I think that is probably true of people who need to get some place at some time that need to run lights and sirens or can’t drive.Housing is one… if you don’t want to eat where you shit. You can always live in Queens and work in Manhattan. This works very well for NYC since people that stay below 96th street or whatever the rich classy boundary is depending on who you speak to… don’t really travel to the other parts because of language barriers or because the train numbers change….but I don’t think that is the issue as Astoria is cheap and affordable. So is the Bronx or other parts. It really doesn’t matter if and when you are armed and only you know it. You see one BR going for USD 300 - 600 in Astoria and as a beat cop you probably hear of where the rent controlled vacancies are. You are supposed to live in the five or 7 boroughs of NYC or Nassau Sulfolk or Westchester Counties if you work for NYC Police but really no one cares as long as you get there when you are supposed to. I know people living in Jersey who work there and forget about driving to work cause I can’t even get a police vehicle out from the precinct area where all the damn cars are supposed to be “angled parking only” but double parked in front and behind on the side walk so literally you can’t even drive on the side walk. The worse are the unmarked cars which you are told to leave alone as they may be evidentiary or some other special detail no one knows about and they have everything from RVs to taxi cabs so you really don’t know who to call to move their damn car. Yeah, sometimes even dispatch and the commanding officers don’t know whose car it is and so you are shit out of luck if it is blocking your car that you just inventoried everything to make sure they are in stock before starting your shift. It used to be bad when they had two makes of cars (caprice and fords which are all keyed alike because they are fleet vehicles and you had to find someone who had a key to the other make) and now they have like 8 different types of cars from taurus to chargers to prius and i’ve heard its quite impossible these days.Oh and even if offered police discounts legally and posted. You cannot take them as there are Internal Affairs Bureau and other agencies everywhere, For every one uniformed officer there are about three non uniformed officers. I have been stopped by transit cops at least twenty times using my shield and asking to see my ID card that goes along with the shield and calling it in to make sure it is real. There are also sooo many cops assigned to areas you never imagine there to be cops like Off the Track Betting, Liquor Control, Finance and Revenue, so its only a matter of time before you get into trouble if you are taking discounts and the most likely to say something would be your partner cause they don’t want to get into trouble or have to testify against you (probably to you directly).Oh and if you are transit, T&LC and traffic… there is no limit to your over time since you have to write alot of tickets and these people do not want to or really cannot afford to pay and choose or have no choice but to keep fighting it and you keep getting called back to go to court. Estimates are with salary and over time from court. You are over 100k easy in your first year but no one wants to be in court all day and the court usually takes more time than you get paid for to travel there and wait for your turn. 4 hours is sometimes under cutting it since NYC courts are insanely busy. The highest occupation hazard for patrolmen are when doing traffic stops or directing traffic so its probably a good thing that NYC cops dont give out that many traffic tickets compared to highway cops. And cars really don’t travel all that fast in the city. Oh and they also have a highway patrol unit for the two highways that run west and west of NYC and the LIE. Those are the cars with the 5 tier of flashing lights and a sign board affixed. You have to go to your command first, grab a radio, call in service, be in uniform, do a radio check before you leave your precinct to go to court. So that takes up about 6 hours with traffic. You can get fired or arrested for contempt if you don’t show up habitually. I think that is the only time you would be unaccompanied and probably hence why they want to have you officially clock in rather than claim you were in traffic for 8 hours. Most don’t like giving tickets as it is unpleasant to deal with and there are no quotas per se like people imagine there to be. I guess its that part of the job that someone has to do it.

What are some of the things that you’ve learned about people by having Trump as President this past several years?

There seems to be no limits to the extent that people are willing to stand up for the guy. There is no accounting for human stupidity or ignorance https://www.facebook.com/NowThisPolitics/videos/464018517733024/Some people consider the right to shop and get a haircut more important than the right to breathe and think they have a perfect legitimate right to do these things because they are Americans. Is it karma or irony that John McDaniel, a vocal protester against the Governor of Ohio's shutdown orders, has recently died of COVID-19?Somehow carrying a semi automatic loaded weapon into the Michigan senate has something to with personal liberties and being able to leave the house during a pandemic.People will support him even though he blatantly acts against the interests of the people who vote for him.Americans seem to think they can ban imports from China but still be able to buy cheap Nikes or clothing at Walmart and somehow don’t see the connection between the two. Many people think its perfectly OK to impose their religious dogma on the rest of the country, even though it may be oppressive or discriminatory to minority groups. Now I know what it must feel like to belong to a massive personality cult. Many Americans will say he is the best President ever without actually being able to articulate why and back it up with solid numbers and facts.America is not a democracy but an oligarchy where the many are ruled by a few.Rather than a United States, the U.S is more like a collection of small independent countries run by governors who happen to be controlled by Washington. This pandemic has shown that states are largely autonomous in their power..As of June 2019, the top 10 percent held 69.4 percent of total U.S. net worth (that is the value of all assets a person holds minus all their liabilities)Americans are unaware that Mexicans didn’t steal your jobs, technology did and the majority of people are simply wage slaves working for the 1%. Companies move to Mexico because its cheaper to produce goods there or the jobs in the US have been replaced by machines. If a guy is rich enough and brags about how much money he has people will actually believe that hes a successful businessman despite seven bankruptcies and three wives.Trump can not even borrow money from a US bank but somehow he is in charge of the US Treasury and Central Bank. Go figure.America is the only country where you can lose an election but still become President.Farmers are having to throw out millions of gallons of milk and produce rots in the fields as they have no way of harvesting or getting the product to the market. People no longer have jobs, no money and cant buy anything at the store anyway.People whose sole means on making a living on tips from being paid $2 an hour are now unemployed and homeless, and most do not have health insurance.Millions of Americans believe Fox News is actually real news and not just entertainment.Americans believe that a gaudy rich real estate developer living in a gold palace in New York understands what its like to be poor and living paycheck to paycheck. You talk a great game about what a great country you are but cant seem to score enough PPEs and ventilators for everybody. Governors have to smuggle in supplies from Korea without the Federal government finding out.The country grinds to a halt as soon as people miss one paycheck. And yes, Fundamentalist Christians are the worlds biggest hypocrites. The health system is a joke.Trump has spent over 100 million dollars on his security detail to visit his Mar-a-Lago resort. That works out to about 250 times his annual salary. He has spent about 1 day in 4 playing golf while on the job. Or about the same as Obama did in 8 years as President.Probably the first time in history that some one who dodged the draft for Vietnam gets to make the commencement address at West point.Trump wants to build a wall to keep out immigrants even though 40% of illegals come in legally and overstay their visas. there is also such a thing as airplanes that immigrants use.Speaking of the wall, in Texas some parts of the border run through private property, and a wall would put some parts of United States on the Mexican side of the border. The government is trying to take peoples land off them by force to build the wall.Trump took credit for the wall that was mostly built by Obama. He was simply adding to it, maybe a few hundred miles out of a 2000 mile border.Trump said the new wall panels would be impossible to climb but video records show it being scaled in under 3 minutes.Trump said he would drain the swamp. All he has done is fill it with alligators.Steven Miller’s father or grandfather was a Hungarian Jew who came to America to escape the Nazis. if Miller had been around the time of his grandfather in WW2 he would likely have ended up in Auschwitz, not be allowed to enter the US and Miller not have been born.Ivanka Trump signed over 500 business patents for her company with the Chinese government while campaigning to buy American.Trump called Jeffrey Epstein a “ terrific guy”. Said Epstein liked his girls “really young”Trumps mother was an immigrant from Scotland and his grandfather ran a brothel in Oregon in the early part of the 20th century. Grandfather was kicked out of Germany for avoiding the draft.Trump pushed for the use of an anti malarial drug that actually increased the death rate and many people died from taking it.Trump received about $480 million from his father and probably would have made more money if he had just invested it in the stock market.Trump is estimated to have personally lost over a billion dollars in 10 years.Trump is reportedly known to cheat at golf.If you are a daughter-in law or girlfriend to the son of the President. You can get a $180,000 dollar a year paying gig without reporting it to Congress as a political donation.Stormy Daniels got 130,000 dollars from Trump. All we get is a fucking T-shirt.Its amazing what you can get people to lie about if you pay them enough or give them enough authority they are not qualified for.Jared Kushner failed his security clearance a dozen times, had multiple omissions and finally got clearance on Trumps say-so.No one, including White House staff, knows what Ivanka Trump does all day.To make money on his casinos Trump would have had to bring in close to a million dollars a day to break even. That was impossible and the casinos folded within 6 months.Trump actually wanted Marla to abort Tiffany (she was unplanned) and hoped she’d have nice breasts.Steve Muchnin the Secretary of the Treasury believes that its possible to make a $1200 subsidy check from the government last 10 weeks. This is the same guy who used a government tax-payer funded jet to go on his honeymoon.Best one I heard yet: “If we are going to have a dictator in America, i want it to be Donald Trump”.Donald Junior seems to have spent the best part of his adult life trying to gain his fathers respect and admiration while the Donald regards him as a bit of a failure and a disappointment. Going on safari shooting rhinos just made him look like a bit of an insensitive tone-deaf jerk.14 year old Barron Trump has a whole floor to himself in Trump Tower and favors wearing suits to copy his dad.Not commonly known but Trump wears platforms in his shoes to appear taller. Has bragged that he is 6′2″ but he is the same height as Barack Obama who is 6′1″.The states that scream most loudly about being anti-government and anti-Washington are largest beneficiaries of federal Aid, including Kentucky, the home state of Mitch McConnell and many are Republican.Jared Kushner’s sister-in-law was in China selling US visas to rich Chinese for $500,000 a pop until the government got wind of it.Jared Kushner’s father is a convicted felon who paid a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law as payback for a bad business deal. He did 2 years in a federal penitentiary. The guy who put his father in prison was none other than Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie.Trump canceled the health insurance on his grand-nephew who had a serious life-threatening illness, as revenge for a dispute over a family will..Mike Pence’s wife told reporters her husband didn’t know he had to wear a Mask at a visit to the Mayo clinic even though he was specifically told by the hospital everyone had to wear a mask.Trump suffers an affliction (Dunning-Kruger) where he believes he is the smartest guy in the room knows better and more than all the experts, including generals and doctors and called himself a “natural” at medicine despite no training or expertise in the field.Stupid people often lack the cognitive awareness that they are actually stupid. This is why Trump is unaware that telling people to drink bleach is not only stupid but he just doesn’t understand why it’s stupid. When asked if she married Trump for his money Melania said he wouldn’t have married her if it wasn’t for her looks.Former Secretary of Energy Rick Perry didn’t know America’s nuclear missiles came under his department. After 3 years in office Trump has still not released his tax returns.Melania is NOT fluent in five languages. In televised shots she says hello in Italian and then reverts to English. She spoke English to a bunch of French school children and relied on an interpreter for the rest. Probably speaks some Serbo-Croatian, Slovenian and some heavily accented English. Its possible to have bone spurs and play college level football when you are the President.Trump say often he attended Wharton business school but he was in the less well-known undergraduate school, not the graduate MBA program. One of his teachers said Trump was one of the laziest students he had ever taught. Penn was relatively easy to get into in 1965 when Trump was there.Trump said he was one of the smartest students in his year but there is no record of him coming anywhere near the top 50 students and his name is not listed anywhere in the summa cum laude class of 1968.So far the president has said little if anything to comfort the families who have lost loved ones due to the corona virus. What he has said is perfunctory and brief and lacking in any real compassion.Recent headline. Melania has been having a long time affair with the head of security at Tiffany in Trump Tower and he looks like Michael Avenatti. But there is one emotion that has never been directed towards the US until now: pity. However bad things are for most other rich democracies, it is hard not to feel sorry for Americans. Most of them did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016. Yet they are locked down with a malignant narcissist who, instead of protecting his people from Covid-19, has amplified its lethality. The country Trump promised to make great again has never in its history seemed so pitiful. Will American prestige ever recover from this shameful episode? The US went into corona virus crisis with immense advantages: precious weeks of warning about what was coming, the world’s best concentration of medical and scientific expertise, effectively limitless financial resources, a military complex with stunning logistical capacity and most of the world’s leading technology corporations. Yet it managed to make itself the global epicentre of the pandemicAs the American writer George Packer puts it in the current edition of the Atlantic, “The United States reacted … like Pakistan or Belarus – like a country with shoddy infrastructure and a dysfunctional government whose leaders were too corrupt or stupid to head off mass suffering.”It is one thing to be powerless in the face of a natural disaster, quite another to watch vast power being squandered in real time – wilfully, malevolently, vindictively. It is one thing for governments to fail (as, in one degree or another, most governments did), quite another to watch a ruler and his supporters actively spread a deadly virus. Trump, his party, and Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News became vectors of the pestilence. The grotesque spectacle of the president openly inciting people (some of them armed) to take to the streets to oppose the restrictions that save lives is the manifestation of a political death wish. What are supposed to be daily briefings on the crisis, demonstrative of national unity in the face of a shared challenge, have been used by Trump merely to sow confusion and division. They provide a recurring horror show in which all the neuroses that haunt the American subconscious dance naked on live TV.If the plague is a test, its ruling political nexus ensured that the US would fail it at a terrible cost in human lives. In the process, the idea of the US as the world’s leading nation – an idea that has shaped the past century – has all but evaporated.Other than the Trump impersonator Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, who is now looking to the US as the exemplar of anything other than what not to do? How many people in Düsseldorf or Dublin are wishing they lived in Detroit or Dallas? It is hard to remember now but, even in 2017, when Trump took office, the conventional wisdom in the US was that the Republican Party and the broader framework of US political institutions would prevent him from doing too much damage. This was always a delusion, but the pandemic has exposed it in the most savage ways.Abject surrenderWhat used to be called mainstream conservatism has not absorbed Trump – he has absorbed it. Almost the entire right-wing half of American politics has surrendered abjectly to him. It has sacrificed on the altar of wanton stupidity the most basic ideas of responsibility, care and even safety. Thus, even at the very end of March, 15 Republican governors had failed to order people to stay at home or to close non-essential businesses. In Alabama, for example, it was not until April 3 that governor Kay Ivey finally issued a stay-at-home order. In Florida, the state with the highest concentration of elderly people with underlying conditions, governor Ron DeSantis, a Trump mini-me, kept the beach resorts open to students travelling from all over the US for spring break parties. Even on April 1, when he issued restrictions, DeSantis exempted religious services and “recreational activities.”Georgia governor Brian Kemp, when he finally issued a stay-at-home order on April 1, explained: “We didn’t know that [the virus can be spread by people without symptoms] until the last 24 hours.”This is not mere ignorance – it is deliberate and homicidal stupidity. There is, as the demonstrations this week in US cities have shown, plenty of political mileage in denying the reality of the pandemic. It is fuelled by Fox News and far-right internet sites, and it reaps for these politicians millions of dollars in donations, mostly (in an ugly irony) from older people who are most vulnerable to the virus draws on a concoction of conspiracy theories, hatred of science, paranoia about the “deep state” and religious providential-ism (God will protect the good folks) that is now very deeply infused in the mindset of the American right.Trump embodies and enacts this mindset, but he did not invent it. The US response to the coronavirus crisis has been paralyzed by a contradiction that the Republicans have inserted into the heart of US democracy. On the one hand, they want to control all the levers of governmental power. On the other they have created a popular base by playing on the notion that government is innately evil and must not be trusted. The contradiction was made manifest in two of Trump’s statements on the pandemic: on the one hand that he has “total authority”, and on the other that “I don’t take responsibility at all”. Caught between authoritarian and anarchic impulses, he is incapable of coherence.Fertile groundBut this is not just Donald Trump. The crisis has shown definitively that Trump’s presidency is not an aberration. It has grown on soil long prepared to receive it. The monstrous blossoming of misrule has structure and purpose and strategy behind it.There are very powerful interests who demand “freedom” in order to do as they like with the environment, society and the economy. They have infused a very large part of American culture with the belief that “freedom” is literally more important than life. My freedom to own assault weapons trumps your right not to get shot at school. Now, my freedom to go to the barber (“I Need a Haircut” read one banner this week in St. Paul, Minnesota) trumps your need to avoid infection.Usually when this kind of outlandish idiocy is displaying itself, there is the comforting thought that, if things were really serious, it would all stop. People would sober up. Instead, a large part of the US has hit the bottle even harder. And the president, his party and their media allies keep supplying the drinks. There has been no moment of truth, no shock of realisation that the antics have to end. No one of any substance on the US right has stepped in to say: get a grip, people are dying here. That is the mark of how deep the trouble is for the US – it is not just that Trump has treated the crisis merely as a way to feed tribal hatreds but that this behaviour has become normalised. When the freak show is live on TV every evening, and the star is boasting about his ratings, it is not really a freak show any more. For a very large and solid bloc of Americans, it is reality. And this will get worse before it gets better. Trump has at least eight more months in power. In his inaugural address in 2017, he evoked “American carnage” and promised to make it stop. But now that the real carnage has arrived, he is revelling in it. He is in his element. As things get worse, he will pump more hatred and falsehood, more death-wish defiance of reason and decency, into the groundwater. If a new administration succeeds him in 2021, it will have to clean up the toxic dump he leaves behind. If he is re-elected, toxicity will have become the lifeblood of American politics.Either way, it will be a long time before the rest of the world can imagine America being great again.THIS WAS ON A FRIEND’S PAGE: An anguished question from a Trump supporter: ‘Why do liberals think Trump supporters are stupid?’THE SERIOUS ANSWER: Here’s what the majority of anti-Trump voters honestly feel about Trump supporters en masse:That when you saw a man who had owned a fraudulent University, intent on scamming poor people, you thought "Fine." Pelosi urged people to shop and eat there at a time when tourism was suffering because of the novel coronavirus, which originated in China late last year.* Trump falsely tweeted that “Crazy Nancy Pelosi” had deleted a video from Twitter of her visit to Chinatown. “She wanted everyone to pack into Chinatown long after I closed the BORDER TO CHINA,” Trump said. But there is no record such a video was ever posted on Twitter by Pelosi.* At an April 13 coronavirus briefing, Trump falsely claimed that during her visit Pelosi said, “‘Let’s all have the big parade — Chinatown parade.'” Pelosi didn’t say that. In fact, that parade had taken place on Feb. 8, more than two weeks before Pelosi went to Chinatown.* At a coronavirus briefing on April 15, Trump exaggerated when he said Pelosi “was trying to have, in San Francisco, parties in Chinatown, because she thought it would be great.” Pelosi didn’t mention parties during her visit, although she urged people to come to Chinatown to shop and eat.* Trump also falsely said Pelosi visited Chinatown “to show that this thing doesn’t exist,” referring to the novel coronavirus. Pelosi never suggested that it didn’t exist. She stressed the need for “prevention, prevention, prevention” — urging people to be “concerned and vigilant,” but not “afraid.4/13/20 Trump claimed today that he has “total” authority to override governors and force states to rescind shutdown orders.“When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total and that's the way it's got to be. It's total, and the governors know that," Trump said in response to one of the questions at a press briefing.“You have a couple of bands of Democrat governors but they will agree to it," Trump continued. But what we have done is — on testing, we’re doing numbers the likes of which nobody has ever seen before5/1/20 TN shelter-in-place lifted5/14/20 Trump, Allentown PA We have the best testing in the world. It could be that the testing is frankly, uuuh, overrated? Maybe it is overrated. But whenever they start yelling we want more, we want more, you know ‘cause they don’t want to give you credit. We have more cases than anybody in the world, but why? Because we do more testing. When you test you have a case, when you test you find something is wrong with people. If we didn’t do any testing we would have very few cases.”Quite obviously he is mistaken. One can have a disease without being tested for the disease. Testing itself is not the end-all, it’s not to keep count of how many people have the disease. It is to determine who has the disease, isolate them, trace contacts, test and isolate them. This guy thinks it is all about him and testing is only being done to increase the count and make him look bad. He hasn’t a clue and unfortunately he is in charge. When 1 reporter asked Trump which provision in the Constitution gives the president the power to open or close state economies. Isolation and quarantine orders are among those police-power functions, which are "derived from the right of the state to take action affecting individuals for the benefit of society," the CDC page on the topic says. One reporter asked Trump which provision in the Constitution gives the president the power to open or close state economies. There was credible information to suspect human-to-human transmission in December 2019, which should have spurred the WHO to investigate immediately. Through the middle of January, it parroted and publicly endorsed the idea that there was not human-to-human transmission happening, despite reports and clear evidence to the contrary. The delays the WHO experienced in declaring a public health emergency cost valuable time, tremendous amounts of time.”As The Washington Post wrote today, the WHO "declared a global health emergency [by January 30], after which the president continued to downplay the outbreak and compare it to the flu." The Trump administration finally recommended social distancing in mid-March“The WHO pushed China's misinformation about the virus, saying it was not communicable and there was no need for travel bans," Trump said. "They told us when we put on our travel ban, there was no need to do it, don't do it, they actually fought us."Trump further argued that his China travel ban announced on January 31 saved "thousands and thousands" of lives, while the WHO was "very much opposed to what we did."A USA Today article said "there is no public record of WHO at any point actively criticizing the US or any other country for deciding to implement a coronavirus-related travel ban" and that the WHO "opposes all travel bans during a pandemic, not just Trump's." Health experts say Trump's travel ban had little effect on the pandemic's spread. The WHO on January 24 said it "advises against the application of any restrictions of international traffic based on the information currently available on this event."6/20/20 Trump at Tulsa rally sId that he had told his people to slow down testing since more testing raised DT he number of known infected.WikipediaAmerican governmentSee also: Veracity of statements by Donald TrumpUS President Donald Trump and his top economic adviser Larry Kudlow have been accused of spreading misinformation about the coronavirus. On February 25, Trump said, "I think that whole situation will start working out. We're very close to a vaccine."[204][205][206][207] At the time, SARS-CoV-2 had been "community-spreading" in the United States undetected for weeks,[208] and new vaccine development may require a minimum of a year to prove safety and efficacy to gain regulatory approval.[209] In an interview with Sean Hannity on March 4, Trump also claimed that the death rate published by the WHO is false (that the correct fatality rate was less than 1 percent, and said, "Well, I think the 3.4 percent is really a false number."),[210][211][212] that the potential impact of the outbreak is exaggerated by Democrats plotting against him, and that it is safe for infected individuals to go to work.[213][214] In a later tweet, Trump denied he made claims regarding infected individuals going to work, despite footage from the interview.[214]The White House has accused the media of intentionally stoking fears of the virus to destabilize the administration.[215] The Stat News reported that "President Trump and members of his administration have also said that US containment of the virus is 'close to airtight' and that the virus is only as deadly as the seasonal flu. Their statements range from false to unproven, and in some cases, underestimate the challenges that public health officials must contend with in responding to the virus."[216] Around the same time that the "airtight" claim was made, SARS-CoV-2 was already past containment because the first case of community spread of the virus was confirmed, and it was spreading faster than severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus with a case fatality rateat least seven times the fatality rate for seasonal flu.[217][218][219]On March 2, Trump told the media that he had heard that a COVID-19 vaccine would be available in "a matter of months", with "a year [being] an outside number". This came right after Trump attended a discussion where his senior health official Anthony Fauci told him it would actually take "a year to a year and a half" (at a minimum, Fauci later said). During that discussion, Trump repeatedly quizzed the leaders of pharmaceutical companies on the time needed to produce vaccines, stating: "I like the sound of a couple of months better". The length of time required is due to vaccines requiring multiple rounds of tests before being approved for the public's use.[220]On March 4, Trump wrongly blamed the Barack Obama administration for making "a decision" that delayed COVID-19 testing by the Trump administration. The policy in question had never been modified by the Obama administration, despite plans to do so. The policy's overall legal roots date to 2004, before the Obama administration. Under the umbrella of Emergency Use Authorizations, the old policy stated that laboratory-developed tests "should not be used for clinical diagnoses without FDA's approval, clearance, or authorization during an emergency declaration". However, this policy was historically treated as a recommendation and generally unenforced, with no clear legal authority of the FDA in this area. The Trump administration continued to require laboratories to apply to the FDA for approval, but allowed the laboratories to test while the FDA processed the applications.[221]On March 6, Trump over-promised on the availability of COVID-19 testing in the United States, claiming that: "Anybody that wants a test can get a test." Firstly, there were criteria needed to qualify for a test; recommendations were needed from doctors or health officials to approve testing. Secondly, the lack of test supplies resulted in some being denied tests even though doctors wanted to test them.[222][223]On March 19, Trump falsely claimed that the drug chloroquine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for COVID-19. This led the FDA to state that it had not approved any drugs or therapies for COVID-19. While Trump claimed that "we're going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately", the leader of the FDA stated that the drug would still need to be tested in a "large, pragmatic clinical trial" on subjects infected with COVID-19.[224] While Trump promoted chloroquine as a potential "game changer", senior health official Anthony Fauci stated that positive results thus far were still based on "anecdotal evidence" and not "definitive" evidence from clinical trials.[225] Trump also remarked that re-purposing existing drugs for COVID-19 is "safe" and "not killing people" (chloroquine is a form of treatment for malaria, while its derivative hydroxychloroquine is a form of treatment for lupus or arthritis), however most drugs may cause side effects.[226] Potentially serious side effects from chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine include irregular heartbeats, tinnitus, blurred vision, muscle weakness or "mental changes".[226][227] Overdoses of these drugs have been documented in scientific literature, including fatal overdoses.[226] Demand for chloroquine in Lagos, Nigeriasharply increased after Trump's comments, with three people overdosing by March 23.[228] A married couple in their 60s living in the state of Arizona ingested a fish tank cleaner product containing chloroquine phosphate; the man died while the woman survived in critical condition. The woman stated that they intended to self-medicate against the coronavirus after hearing Trump tout the potential benefits of chloroquine during a public briefing.[229][230]On March 21, Trump addressed a shortage of ventilator supply in the United States, claiming that carmaker companies General Motors and Ford "are making them right now". The companies were in fact not producing ventilators. The Associated Press news agency estimated it would take at least several months for the carmaker companies to change their factories' production abilities.[231]Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York City, claimed that it was a misperception that the disease “hangs in the air" as it " takes direct person-to-person contact”, “If you’re under 50 and you’re healthy, (...) there’s very little threat". He pledged to keep schools open, even if pupils are sick. He declined to cancel St. Patrick’s Day parade and then did. He resisted calls to cancel regular street sweeping and then did. He gave wrong instructions during a photo oppublic 3-1-1 call.[232]PROTRUMPIAFaye Cosma Faye Cosma 96% of his actions have had absolutely nothing to do with Wall Street but the safety of the American people.
