Only one of my grandparents (my gramma Kitty) was born after 1900. The oldest, my grandfather Vincenzo, was born in Naples in 1863; my nonna Concetta was born in 1870, my grampa Jack in 1887. I must be one of the few 45-year-olds in the U.S. who can say that.One eighth of my ethnic background is sheer mystery. My grampa Jack was half French Canadian, but we don't know what the other half was (his mother died when he was a baby). There's reported to be some Scots-Irish and Native American (Lenape) in there, but we honestly don't know.My father was an infantry captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. He fought with the 77th Infantry in the Philippines and the 34th Infantry in Italy.My last name is exceptionally rare. It originates in Campania, Italy, but there are presently more Ernanos in the U.S. than in Italy — all of them, as far as I know, related to me.My paternal grandmother gave birth to 14 children, but only 8 survived to adulthood. Similarly, my maternal great-grandparents had 8 children and only 4 survived to adulthood. So I could have had a lot more aunts, uncles, and cousins.The men in my family seem disposed toward younger women. My maternal grandfather was 21 years older than my gramma, my dad was 21 years older than my mom, and my brothers are 23 and 11 years older than their wives, respectively.My uncle Jackie, my mom's kid brother, was a gifted baseball player. He was an ambidextrous pitcher, and played with Pete Rose in the minors. But we'll never know if he might have made the majors — he died in a construction accident when he was 21.My grampa Jack is the only ancestor of mine whose family was in the U.S. prior to the turn of the 20th century. The rest all immigrated after 1900.Because my father and I were both late children, I have first cousins in their 80s and 90s. My oldest first cousin, my Uncle Beans (called “uncle” for obvious reasons and nicknamed Beans from toddlerhood), was born in 1923 and died at age 87 in 2010.My grampa Jack had a 4th grade education and was illiterate.
