If you took them down, then there would certainly be more guns around, and that thought gives them the vapors.I’ll give you a “for instance”. In Texas, courtrooms and directly associated rooms (I read that to mean judge’s chambers, jury room, witness prep room, holding cells for the accused, etc.) are gun free, and it’s enforced - metal detectors, armed guards, and so on. If you’re inside those rooms, you feel about as gun free as the inside of an airport terminal. But, our county and city clerk offices store some records, and apparently some fines issued by the courts are paid at those offices. So they have posted gun-free zone signs. No guards there, no metal detectors - they believe the signs will stop someone bent on shooting them over paying their fines. Highly irrational and illogical, but they refuse to remove the signs based on that.A little more background - In Texas only people with a carry permit, a LTC - are allowed to carry outside their homes or cars. If you’re a non-LEO and have a gun, by law you “should “ have the LTC. LTC holders are one tenth as likely as sworn law enforcement to commit felonies or misdemeanors. One TENTH as likely. Yet they don’t disarm the police in the clerk’s offices. The gun free signs are only directed at the LTC holders (the rest of the population covered by the penal code on carrying), yet they are the least likely to cause a problem.When you look at the guys with guns in the West Freeway church, it’s obvious how effective an LTC carrier can be. They ended the confrontation in 6 seconds. At the other church 2 years earlier, gun free, the shooter had all the time he wanted, and had 46 casualties. There were 2 in the West Freeway incident. Yet if you try to talk to the clerks about this, they clutch their pearls and gasp, “but we want to be safe!”.These people are grasping at the one tangible emblem of safety they have. The signs. A good guy with a gun v. the bad guy with a gun.By grasping at the signs as an emblem of safety, they know they have in fact reduced the number of guns in their offices. LTC carriers will observe and obey the signs. They won’t carry in there.What they don’t grasp, and willfully choose NOT to grasp, is that not all guns are carried equally.The guys they REALLY don’t want to have guns in there, will ignore the signs. The clerks ignore that LTC guns are never a threat to them, ever. As a result, the nut job intending to make a name for himself, or resolve a grievance, has free rein. Perhaps they believe the bailiffs and police upstairs in the courtrooms will get down there before they are all dead. I don’t know. The conversations never get that far.These ladies vote, and have the ear of the officials they work with every day. The County Judge, who could order the removal, won’t. I know he isn’t the sort to ignore facts, but these are people who work for him day in and day out - he needs their cooperation. And more is the shame - he is actually putting them at MORE risk, not less, by leaving the signs up. He is advertising to the nut jobs there is no resistance in those offices.So to sum up my answer, those that fought for the law to be there, refuse to acknowledge they made a serious mistake. Others see the signs as their only emblem of salvation, and refuse to let them come down.
