What is your NPCIL (mechanical) interview experience?

I had a very unique experience this year in NPCIL interview. This was the first ever formal interview of my life (because I didn't experienced any interview during campus placements and then straight away I started my Gate 2019 preparations) .So I was a bit afraid ,since Npcil interviews are known for its complexity and the calling ratio this time was also very large I.e, 1:12Date- 23/05/2019Venue- YMCA Hotel, jai singh marg ,DelhiReporting Time : 9 amI reached the venue atleast 20 minutes before the reporting time .We were not allowed to enter at first and were made to wait in a garden type of open space . Everyone was standing in that open area with a sort of hope and nervousness in his face .We waited there for atleast 15 minutes and then the watchman instructed us to enter in queue . We were asked to write our details in the entry register and basic frisking happened. Thereafter ,we reached infront of a hall and there again a queue was formed branch wise ,namely mechanical ,civil and electrical . Mechanical queue was the longest suggesting the ruthless competition.Thereafter we were called one by one .On showing the interview call letter we were alloted a token number and three coupons .These coupons was meant for Tea ,snacks and afternoon lunch respectively.I was alloted token number 6 .Then we entered the hall and waited for our turn for the document verification , meanwhile we were asked to arrange our documents and it's Xerox in a particular specified order. They were very strict for the documents ,no undertaking nothing .If you lag any document you are straight away rejected ,if you lack your category certificate you were only allowed to appear in the interview if your marks are above UR cutoff else not . Meanwhile, my document verification happened very smoothly .Your document will be verified in a two step process ,that is two different people will check it to minimise any errors .Candidates whose documents were successfully verified were sent upstairs near interview room .I was in the second slot .There were three panels for mechanical and I was the third candidate to be interviewed by my panelI then entered the interview room ,there were 8 members in the room , including one female member .( Let F denote the female interviewer Ch be the chairman and I1 I2 and so on be the others in the panel)I greeted the lady interviewer first and then every other members in the panel , I was then offered the seat by the ladyCh- Before we start the interview there is one message to be given to you (points toward one of the panel member)I1- See as you might be knowing npcil plants are mostly located in South so there is a huge possibility that one who is recruited is posted in South which ,north indians generally don't prefer ,so this was just to inform you to be prepared to it .Me -(nodded) No sir , not a problem at all.Ch-So you graduated in which year ?Me- Sir I graduated in 2018 and was preparing for the Gate as I couldn't score well last year ?Ch- What is your score this year ?Me - Sir 797Ch- Okay tell me a subject which you like the most and one which you dislike the most ?Me- Sir I like thermal subjects like basic thermodynamics and heat transfer the most whereas I don't like fluid machinery very much involving pumps and all.( I preferred telling them my weakness beforehand as I was given this opportunity )Ch-No problem ,dislikes generally happen when we haven't encountered it working practically and once you will get to see it ,that dislike will not be there ,isn't it ?Me - Yes Sir , definitely.Ch (looking towards my final semester marks)- So ,you have done a subject called plant layout and material handling ,what you have studied in it ?Me-Sir about how the basic layout of any plant is designed depending on its utility and product which it makes and also how materials is handled in plants so that every resources can be optimally utilised.Ch- How is material handling done ?Me-There are devices employed for that processCh- Like ?Me- Sir one very basic example is conveyor belt other examples include cranes ,belts robotic arms ,guide vehicles and so on ..Ch - Ok suppose you have to lift this heavy object (can't be lifted manually) from one spot to other ,what are the basic steps involved ?Me- First and foremost before executing this activity we need to train our manpower who is involved in material handling ( trying to act smart) There after we will use machines like cranes and robotic hooks to lift the object and keep it in some heavy vehicles like truck then the truck will transport the object and on reaching the destination ,initial process has to be repeated .Ch- How does the crane works ? It's mechanism?Me - Sir I don't know the in-depth mechanism involved in a crane I can just speculate a rough picture of it ..Ch - Go ahead.Me-Sir there is a hook connected by a rope through a pulley to main driving mechanism .Ch-How can it lift so heavy objects ,what is the concept involved?Me- I think the concept of mechanical advantage is involved here.(Chairman directs other member I2 to ask)I2-What is the difference between positive drive and negative drive ?Me- told him the definitionI2 -Some examples of negative drive ? Where it is used?Me- Told this as wellI2-What kinds of rotation on driven can be achieved with different arrangement of belt drives ?Me- I said driven will be of same direction as driver for crossed belt arrangement and for simple belt arrangement direction will be opposite ( actually answer is just its opposite and mistakenly said it in a hurry, although I2 didn't noticed but the chairman did , he asked me to draw this on a paper and when I started drawing I realised my mistake and hence I apologized)I2- was it a slip of tongue or concept issue ?Me - No sir ,just a slip of tongueI2- Definition of gears ?Me- ToldI2- How gears are mounted on shaft?Me - sir through keysI2- Any other?Me - Sir adhesive can be used as in toys ,etc not sure about this for industry.I2- No no adhesives are used in industry as well. Any other ?Me - Sir having toothed pattern on shaft that can be locked with gears ( I was not confident …but chairman encouraged me to answer this )I2-Ok , I want a gear that transmits power to the driven and simultaneously translates as well ,is it possible ?Me- Sir it should be , although not very sure ,can I guess it ?Ch- We as an engineer are expected to guess wherever possibleMe -sir worm and worm wheel ,where worm transmits power to driven and translate as wellI2- No that is a different thingMe- Sir it should be possible , although couldn't imagine at this moment.(Next I3 comes into picture)I3 - How does adding silicon to steel changes it's property ?Me- Told(Next was I4 , throughout rude and dissatisfying expression on his face)I4- You know welding ?Me- Told him definitionI4-Types of welding ?Me-Told him ( wasn't satisfied with my way of classifying it , actually different books have different grounds of classification) Explained it little more (didn't appreciated ,plain face)I4-Types of arc welding?Me-Told (during my explanation I called stick welding as one type ,which he didn't liked)I4-SMAW ?Me -Sorry sir that is stick weldingI4-SAW?Me-ToldI4-Example?Me- Ship weldingI4-No ,not ship welding (rude face again ,but I was correct)I4-why we use flux in electrode ?Me-ToldI4-Why we need a shielding envelope ? From what we are protecting it ?Me-Sir outside impurities and also it gives atmosphere for fusionI4-And ?Me-Sorry I can't recall moreI4- What is TIG welding ?Me-Told ,was asked to draw it's figure drawn that as wellI4-which is the fastestMe- LBMI4- arre among SMAW SAW and TIG onlyMe-TIGI4-Most efficient?Me-Depends on application(I4 concludes to chairman ,and then chairman indicated the lady to ask )F- ( she drew one figure of Fluid mechanics having a vertical pipe with two pressure gauges separated by a distance) In the given figure among the two pressure gauges one is defective ,how will you find that ?( I was completely blank ,couldn't think of any answer ,I asked her sometime to think which she gave ,but after 30 secs only few panelists were asking the lady to move on to next question as they thought I can't answer it )Me- Mam this question can be answered by trail and error method ,for example we will assume one gauge to be normal and then apply Bernoulli if the other gauge is showing reading as per the formula then it's correct otherwise not and vice versa for the other gauge is to be doneF- No No it can be just solved by observation no equations needed ( eventually I2 also supported her ..)Me -( I was again blank for a while , and panelist were again impatient and asking the lady to proceed..the only panelist who asked one material science question asked me to answer it based on my previous statement ,meanwhile I analysed the figure and found the flow direction was in accordance with pressure gauges reading) Mam actually both gauges are correct in their reading as it can be seen from flow direction.F- (didn't responded anything and concluded to chairman ,I think my answer was correct )I5 -(asked two three questions from my industrial training which was very basic )I3-(again the material science one ) Ok one last question , if there is a rope through a pulley placed in a room of normal temperature and other rope was placed in a room of bakery at elevated temperature ,now which rope has greater chances of failure ?Me - Sie the one which is kept at the elevated temperature roomI3- Why ?Me - Sir it's because of creepI3- Ok goodCh- Thank you ,you may go nowThe whole interview went for around 20 minutes I guess (not sure about the time )It went average , could have been better ,but it wasnt in my control ,the questions were either very basic or very weird (and in both cases impressing them is not easy)Soon after my interview , my name was announced and I was given the medical slip , everyone around started congratulating me as it was seen an almost selectionI completed my medicals in Max super speciality hospital ,vaishali , Ghaziabad. The medical examination was also interesting which is a different story to tellBeing almost assured of my selection ,my dreams shattered when the final results of npcil came after 20 days or so……My name was not there in the list :-(Reasons?1)Since they were declaring the results on the same day….eventually number of selected students were much more than the vacancies.2)People with Gate score of 2017 who tooked admissions in IITs were also called with the same gate score of 2017 , thus creating a huge difference as they were more specialized .3) At mumbai centre ,one of my friend told that every fourth candidate to be interviewed came up with a medical slip ( I know he might have exaggerated ,but still feeling could be understood)4) Questions were stupid to be frank and answers to most questions were one liners …now to impress the interviewer …we must have an interview that is more like a discussion where your instincts are projected …but here things were not like that .5) This was my first ever interview and I was not technically very crisp as there had been a substantial gap between interview and gate exam .6)Luck didn't favoured me that dayOverall experience was good ,it created once a feeling of settlement in my mind , retained it for 20 days and then blown it like a blast .No worries ,life goes on …and I hope something more exciting is there for me in the future.
