PDF Editor FAQ

What's a good whiteboard-like Mac app that'll work great for teaching online?

Hi! Have you tried Deekit (Deekit )? They have a few templates or you can draw your content before the session. And then complete the content live with your students.

What is the current state of C# and .NET on Linux? How are the IDE/debugger/profiler tools compared to Eclipse (or tools in Java world)? What does MonoDevelop not provide that Visual Studio/ReSharper or Eclipse does?

HiI've been working with mono since 2006 and in 2007 grounded my startup and since I'm to largest extent c# developer decided to make website in ASP.net. Due to the fact that I did not have too much money for Windows Server licences I decided to try mono and linux stack. The problem is that I was stupid enough to try/early-adopt latest ASP.net stuff (at that point) like CSSFriendlyControlAdapters. After day or two hacking in VS I deployed website to Fedora and it worked, but it did not "look right". The problem was in CSS style attribute generation .net and mono generated different names. So I wrote bug report and 2 weeks after that this was fixed. And I'm on their mailing lists since then (this is relevant later). In order to talk about maturity of some technology we need a definition of maturity, but let us assume I have a hint about what you mean.Mono and linuxBehind mono is Xamarin and community. Currently focus of the Xamarin is mobile world. In 2010 I got private beta invitation (because I was on their list) for MonoDroid, later called Mono for Android and today Xamarin.Android. My first experience after manual installation of Android SDK, emulators, eclipse and VS plugin and project new + F5 - was WOW. Emulator appeared with the sample code. As you know Android is Linux + API written in java, so it is more complex than just Linux and mono and Xamarin.Android works for great number of people in Xamarin community (and the number is growing approaching 900k).I did few smaller apps for my internal use and am working on few other which would span 9-10 platforms. One sample is Markdown editor which spits out HTML, but based on html template I have prepared for Composite C1 CMS system.DesktopSo what is the problem on Desktop - it is simple UI, so I can reuse Windows Forms app, until I hit the problem with WebBrowserControl which has on Windows IE (trident) backend and on Linux/Mac several implementations (based on WebKit or Mozilla's Gecko) and it is not easy task to choose and implement one.But for desktops I would suggest you to pick GTK# for not so beautiful look and feel, but xplat portability or Mono Mac (Xamarin.Mac) with bindings for AppKit.WebMVC3 template in Monodevelop works. With MVC4 you'll need a bit more effort and even more for MVC5. haven't tried those since 2014-02.Note: WCF is not completely implemented.I can talk about ASP.net v.5 (vNext), because I work with it since 2014-05 and at that point only smaller/simpler samples worked (David Fowler's samples for linux/mac). A week ago (2015-01-25) I made more complex MVC6 sample working with kestrel server on Ubuntu. In next few days I plan is to test even more complex samples like MusicStore and BugTracker. So if you are planing to work on web in the future this combination might be very good bet, because ASP.net v5 implements a lot of good ideas from other technologies (Node.js).IDE - MonoDevelop and Xamarin StudioXamarin Studio = MonoDevelop + commercial plugins (Xamarin.iOS, Xamarin.Android and Xamarin.Mac).MonoDevelop and Xamarin Studio are not Visual Studio and though they mimic and try to be like VS the experience is not the same. I work even more with XS from day to day. For some stuff like manually editing project files I prefer XS, because it does not need to save and close project file in order to reload.MonoDevelop has code-analysis tool that is hidden secret similar to ReSharper, but it is not ReSharper.Automation system (AddIns, PlugIns) is a lot simpler than in VS, namely almost all features (90%) in MD (debuggers, visualisers, desingers) are implemented as MD AddIns.Current activitiesWhat can be concluded from discussions on mailing lists since 2014-06 (2014-09) the mono core team is adding missing bits from Microsoft's .net reference source to fill the gaps. Roslyn is ported, but not yet integrated into toolchain. The runtime will be optimised and mono-core (.net-core) will be implemented.PerformanceAccording to some benchmarks (xamarin/benchmarker) mono is faster in some areas and slower in other. Those areas where mono is slower by greater factor are investigated and are planned to be reimplemented/fixed (too much details for this discussion).Mono runtime has number of options which can be passed for fine tuning and according to some benchmarks, some can bring c# speed close to c/c++.c/c++ integationThis is done in .net with PInvoke and only "problem" which user must understand is library search paths and naming convention (linux to linux distros, Android, ...). I did it and it is not trivial, but it is not rocket science either. Currently I work on one project where I plan to add c/c++ library to Xamarin.iOS and Xamarin.Android component.HTHthanksmel
