PDF Editor FAQ

What do you think about two product managers co-founding a startup?

There are only two roles in an early stage startup - builders and sellers. Period. It doesn't matter how many Product Managers are founders. What matters is how many of them are builders and how many of them are sellers. If neither of them can build nor sell, but just spec all day, no investor would touch the company with a 10 foot pole. My VC mentor jokes about a time when he had 6 MBAs who formed a team and came to him asking for seed funding. He had the best laugh in a long time.Myself being a Product Manager at a VC funded startup, I have a hard time imagining what a team with 100% product managers would build. It often doesn't turn up with a happy ending. In a very early stage startup, there is nothing much to spec or plan. Everything is chaotic by design. You follow your intuition and experiment. You don't have a big team to coordinate nor have anything resembling an organized process. Traditional product managers are useless in such scenarios as their primary strength is in planning and coordination. If the product manager can switch to different hats - development and sales - then it would work.

What technology (software & hardware) is being used on construction sites to allow construction professionals to work more effectively and increase the amount of time spent on site rather than in the (site) office?

Depends on the user. For foremen and superintendents, PlanGrid is the best way to get "old school" builders to eliminate paper (because it's the fastest and simple). For Engineers, managers, or construction professionals, I think a Toughbook 53 with BlueBeam is best. Professionals need access to all systems and there's no way around Windows.AproPlan is great, but it's geared towards professionals and doesn't render plans and specs as fast as PlanGrid. I know a project team cannot replace all systems with Vela/AutoDesk 360 or AproPlan, so it's really a secondary device.

Is it inappropriate that the framer who built my house took a 2x4 and plywood from us to one of his other jobs?

Depends . . . are you in a contract where he is responsible for all the materials he BUYS and uses on the project? Are YOU paying him on a T&M [time and material] basis? If he is on a straight contract to build your house as per plans and specs, then he may have to return such lumber if needed, and in this case, he may have had that material as extra from his lumber list.I have done many lumber list in my estimating career, and I always tell the person who paid me for the list that I do not have extra material in my list. If you use every stick of lumber as noted in the plans and specs, and your framed doesn’t have a ‘home project’, you will have all the lumber you need, and no waste. Most builder will have an additional waste of 5% to 10%, sometimes and that may be justified due to unforeseen conditions, or the framer used a premium length of lumber for his saw horses, which I do not include on my list.I don’t include the waste, as I don’t know where this may happen, so the smart way is to increase the dollar value by 5% or 10%, since you won’t know which piece of lumber you may need.

Really easy to upload a template and add people to sign. I like that the dashboard helps me keep track of everything that's been sent and that is still outstanding.
