To those who are saying that it doesn’t really matter anymore, you need to be more in touch with some individuals who went through these kind of situations before.Having personally known 2 individuals, I can definitely say that society in Singapore is still very much reluctant to accept such pre-marital pregnancies. Otherwise there would not have been a situation where I had to convince my friend on not committing suicide.We are improving. But definitely not yet at a state where one can safely assume that majority will not bat an eyelid upon hearing your “I’m pregnant but not married” story.Singapore, although a modern country, it is very well entwined in traditions and culture of each of the main races and it is also very much a patriarchal society.Even when buying an HDB (Government housing, 80% of Singaporeans stay in these), there is no option for unmarried mothers to buy a new HDB flat. (I’m an unmarried mother, and my child is a Singapore citizen. Am I eligible for extended Government-Paid Maternity Leave?)In fact, they do not even receive the Baby Bonus Cash Gift (S$8,000 for 1st & 2nd Child, S$10,000 for 3rd and 4th child). (No extra perks if unwed mums adopt own children) This “tool” is apparently meant to encourage parenthood within a marriage.With such differentiation made, in my personal opinion, it is the child who gets directly or in-directly effected.In my humble opinion, if anything, the pioneering of removing the taboo on unwed pregnancies, has to start from the Government itself. This would prevent the public from looking at ladies with unwed pregnancies as underprivileged individuals.In fact, they have already started doing this.
