I did! This was my second total solar eclipse, and I cannot recommend enough that people put aside all other activities to make the trek into the path of totality when the opportunity comes again. While no eclipse is likely to replicate the amazement of the first one I witnessed in 1970, I am so glad that I made the trip from Fresno, California to Idaho to see one again.This time I wanted more altitude so that I could watch the shadow of the moon approach and recede across the landscape at forty miles a minute. I saw on YouTube that a number of people climbed Grand Teton to watch the eclipse, and a fine vantage point that must have been. I was thirty miles away from them on top of Relay Ridge in the Big Hole Mountains of Idaho. The summit is topped by radio towers, so there is an accessible dirt road to the top, which at 8840 feet elevation stands 4000 feet above the surrounding plains. Over a hundred viewers had driven up the rugged road to watch the event from the mountaintop.As partiality went from 80 to 100 percent, the atmosphere on the mountain became noticeably darker and cooler. In the minute leading to totality, we watched the edge of the shadow approach across the Snake River Valley from the WNW before the sky went to a new level of darkness. The two minutes of totality seemed to last a long time for me as I sat comfortably in a chair gazing at the awesome sight in the sky and the sunset-like twilight surrounding us in a circle. Pictures cannot do it justice. Seeing the corona directly and in the context of a panoramic landscape raises the experience to the realm of sublimity.After the light of the sun returned, we watched as the shadow’s trailing edge swept slowly across Teton Valley, Grand Teton still in darkness across the way. Then the Teton Mountains too emerged into sunlight, over half a minute later.Even at this altitude, the air was somewhat smoky from forest fires in Montana, and this dulled the rich colors that can accompany an eclipse of the sun. Even though the sky had displayed a clear and bright Milky Way during the night that I spent on top, only a few planets were visible to me during the eclipse, due to the diffusion of bright coronal light by the dust and smoke polluting the air.
