PDF Editor FAQ

What makes a firearm “military grade”? Is it just when a firearm is used by the military? What are some examples or military grade weapons and “civilian or non military grade weapons”?

I bought an MSI 990FXA motherboard. You know, the one they claim has “Military Grade” components. It caught fire.“Oh, wow. They weren’t kidding. It really is military grade!”, I thought as my house filled with smoke.Military Grade - adj.implies that the device was made by the lowest bidder, who is under contract to ensure the device follows Murphy’s laws to the letter.Usually implies the subtext that the device is older than the user, and sometimes, the device has repair jobs that is older than the current user.Military Grade means absolutely nothing. If you hear someone refer to something as “Military Grade”, they are trying to sell you something. For example, is the toilet paper in an MRE “military grade” toilet paper? Of course not. That’s ridiculous. However, I’d bet if the company resold that same toilet paper on the civilian market, there would be a big and shiny “Military Grade” label on the packaging somewhere. The M16A2 that I was issued as a boot, when I first joined my unit, looked like it saw action in ‘Nam. If it hadn’t been an A2, I’d have bet money my dad carried it in the delta. I swear to God I expected it to have a serial number in the low teens. There was no blueing on the barrel, and it rusted every time I took it to the field. I could fit a CP brush between the upper and lower receiver. The rear sight windage didn’t click. It turned freely like a bearing.Don’t even get me started on the fuel pumps. My first MOS was Bulk Fuels, and at first glance, I’d swear the 600GPM pumps had a coal fire box on them somewhere. They looked like some shit you’d see behind the barn at an old Wyoming farmhouse or something. Ran about as well too. Yeah, 600GPM when they were brand new. You want to actually pump fuel? Well, make some room, because you are going to have to play musical pumps until you find one that actually works. If you go through all the pumps, and still haven’t found a working one, that’s okay. You can take apart six pumps, and transform all the parts into 3 pumps, and maybe one of those will work. This is what I think of when I hear, “Military Grade”.Edit: In fairness to MSI, their support was excellent. I got an upgraded motherboard after the RMA process. So while this is a good example of “military grade” being used as a meaningless phrase, it is not a good example of a company squeezing it’s customers. MSI treated me very well.

What causes companies to provide poor customer service?

Company policies that are sub-optimal for the consumer, that the customer service rep knows are sub-optimal for the consumer but they are forced to comply with. Example: requiring the customer to pay return shipping for a warranty replacement.Setting misleading expectations for the customer. It doesn't matter if the customer should have had different expectations. If the customer has expectations different from reality, the company needs to figure out how to accurately set consumer's expectations and fulfill them perfectly every time. Example: clearly communicating new vs. used condition, the photo matching the product exactly, clearly stating the backorder status, exact ship date and the anticipated delivery date by the carrier.Relying on human beings doing their job perfectly, rather than having a bulletproof process. Example: Depending on people to remember the status of an order and moving it to the next stage, depending on people to remember to check on the status of an RMA, failing to properly alert people automatically when outstanding claims and orders are not taken care of within a reasonable time frame.Inadequate means of helping the customer service staff unwind and cope with problem customers after the fact, causing them to assume the worst about the customer. Example: An upset customer is particularly degrading to the staff, tries to cheat a system, or threatens to seek to make you--the lowly customer service rep-- personally culpable to your managers. It's a bit traumatic and it can cause people in the customer service department to complain amongst themselves, begin to think the worst of other customers, and lose the desire to diligently seek to make customers satisfied.Having customer service directly sell to people with a service issue. There is an appropriate way for customer service to sell: "By the way, I noticed you bought the [product], did you need the [accessories] with that?" However, if someone is calling to resolve a problem with their current product, delivery, and whatnot, they don't want to buy anything else at least until their problem is resolved. Not mining the experiences of the customer service staff to improve policies, discover repeat problems, discover flaws in the processes, and give personalized praise to those who are instrumental in making customers happy.

Should I buy all of my PC parts in sections instead of buying them altogether?

I agree with most saying save up then buy them… Replacement policies are ~30 day mark from the supplier, then you’ve got to go to the manufacturer (up to a month before COVID-19 for a replacement via the RMA process).Next saving for the “general budget allows you to buy the “current” next big thing. In PCs the CPUs come out around every year and every 2 years bigger improvements come out. For GPUs it’s around every 2 years for the next-gen GPUs (Nvidia - GTX 10XX series was 2016, RTX20XX, GTX16XX was 2018, AMD 2015 for R9 3 Series, 2016 Polaris RX 4XX, 2017 RX 5XX series, Vega 2017, RX 5XXXX series 2019) So it’s Nvidia that seems to do the 2-year cycle AMD seems to do an update every year or so, although the jump to their new RX 5XXXX series was 2 years. Typically you buy a good CPU ~4–6 years use, and a Good GPU is 4 years before it’s obsolete, example the GTX 1060 (2016) obsolete by the GTX 1650 Super Q3 of 2019 that was probably to beat out the RX 570 which was cheaper and faster than the GTX 1650 (used more power since it was a “mainstream” AMD GPU from 2017).Anyway, RMA vs ~30 Day replacement from vendor, sure Warranty time would be weird to wait that long most decent PC products have a 3+ year warranty and if its the PSU I wouldn’t buy one with less than a 5-year one. For RAM Lifetime only. All in exchange for some possible price discounts by buying it spread around the year.Granted there are 2 components I would recommend buying when their prices are low: The PC Case ATX has been the same since the ’80s… So if you find a Case you really like on the cheap go for it! The PSU these haven’t really changed since PCI-E came out, get a Good 80+ 5 Year warranty 550W+ PSU on sale you’re golden.RAM if you’re going to buy older tech…DDR4 is headed out, DDR5 is “coming soon™”Take a look at sites like logicalincrements dot com and pcpartpicker dot com. Also here’s a good breakdown of the performance you can expect from various price points:Other good youtube channels off the top of my head: Gamers Nexus, Pauls Hardware, Bitwit, Jayztwocents…I’m sure there is more good content I don’t recall at this time!Good Luck!
