In what ways does Google Scholar fall short?

Before writing about the shortcomings, one thing that I can confidently say is that Google Scholar (GS) is the most-used academic search system right now, based on a survey which I conducted in my university, across most disciplines and experience levels. However, researchers are not in a situation to just use the articles solely retrieved by GS for their literature review and ad-hoc search requests. Apart from the issues mentioned by other writers, there are two issues faced by researchers.The first issue being the sole option of free-text search. GS is not a task-based search system. To provide precise and relevant papers, a system has to be task-based i.e. it has to better understand the contextual requirements of the user. The generic Google search engine today provides tailored and personalized results based on the user profile and user-log data. May be, the same philosophy could be brought to GS. Two simple literature review-related tasks (1) building an initial reading list of research papers at the start of literature review and (2) Finding topically-similar papers based on 'multiple' seed papers, could be initially implemented. For task 1, there are multiple approaches and algorithms proposed by researchers for identifying seminal papers along with a diverse set of papers covering the various sub-topics related to the search keywords. Any of these approaches could be used. For task 2, currently GS provides only the option of finding related papers for a single paper. In reality, most researchers try to group papers so as to find similar groups of papers in order to outline the patterns in research agendas, approaches and also solutions in these papers. This new task-based interface could be an add-on along with the existing search page. It would definitely be useful for researchers.The second issue is the lack of demarcation of papers by different disciplines. Today, most of the research studies are interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary or multi-disciplinary. It would be very convenient if there are some facets or labels to show the parent discipline. If the system is even able to identify interdisciplinary papers, that would also be great.
