A mother of two goes to school everyday to pick her kids. She walks to the school which is approximately 4 km away in the scorching heat.She doesn't want her kids to feel the heat so she doesn't walk with them to home. So while returning back, she takes public transport.Everyday she saves Rs 5–10 without caring for her comfort.We all who belong to middle class have such stories where our parents save money without caring for themselves.I think this is the highest form of self control. They not only control their desires for fancy things but also live outside their comfort zone.

I don't think it will affect car ownership itself. If you need a car, you will purchase a car. In cities, there may be alternatives as well, as “greener” transportation forms are promoted.The cities are more likely to see a higher percentage of single mothers, which will play to the alternatives.I think the question was more with the car culture, where people worked on their vehicles, either fixing up an older car to actually use, customizing into a hot rod, or even just installing a sound system. This aspect may be impacted by the lack of a father in the home, as I picked up a lot of knowledge by watching my dad work (of course, there was no guarantee your dad was not an accountant and had no interest rebuilding an engine in the garage).Of course, mothers value safety over all other values. So, if there was the slightest hint of “hurting yourself” that activity has to be replaced by something safer, preferably indoors.In contrast, which I was in high-school, I had a 17-year old classmate who dropped a ford engine into a 57 Chevy (he had 2, after all. And two Chevelle SS’s). Different time!Another 16-year old classmate was given an old car but it took some work to get it on the road. This particular mode of transport -Child baskets on a bicycle, due to bikes being the more common form of getting around.
