Is paying $20 for the Task Rabbit app worth it?

As part of an ongoing project evaluating every app and platform in the sharing and gig economy I participated and evaualated TaskRabbit.com and Im pleased to offer my assessment of TR across three different dimensions on-boarding, earning potential, and ongoing supplier/vendor assistance..Taskrabbit is an online platform that connects consumers with local Tasker’s to do most any odd job such as home cleaning, mounting of a TV, putting together IKEA furniture, and all sorts of gig related tasks. It’s crazy. You can really get almost anything done on TaskRabbit around your home and I believe that might be one of the detriments as to why it has not really been successful and no wonder it was acquired by IKEA furniture in an acquisition described as opportunistic in the fall of 2017First, I will discuss supplier on-boarding onto the TaskRabbit platform. If I’m honest the amount of investment required of me to want to onboard and become a “Tasker“ took quite a bit of discretionary effort on my part. Moreover, had I not been conducting my ongoing evaluation of every app and the gig economy and sharing economy, I probably would’ve bailed out several times during on-boarding process. But because I am CEO of GreenPal, an online market place for lawn care services, I stuck it out test driving Task Rabbit. All in all on boarding along with completing all of the required steps to become a taskrabbit supplier took about eight hours.First of course I had to enter my information, and furnish my Social Security number, and As if that’s not enough banking information on the same form to pass a background check and set up the ability to receive payments. This alone I would imagine would scare most people, however I gritted my teeth and put in these personal sensitive details. I really wanted to see what TR had to offer. After I passed the background check a week later, I began completing the initial training modules provided by TaskRabbit that took a few hours to complete. I must say that these modules felt more like employee training rather than getting up to speed on how to use their app and technology.By the way.. I would say 3/4 of the training was more about how to best manage your own independent contracting business for handyman services and task related services, and how to cover your butt and not get screwed when negotiating with clients. All in, the on boarding or more accurately employee training that TaskRabbit requires all suppliers go through is quite rigorous and cost money out of pocket so I give it an F.I can honestly say I would not have taken the leap of faith to complete all of these required on boarding steps unless I was really hard on my luck and desperate to earn cash anyway I could. On the other hand when TaskRabbit was founded in 2008. During the economic crisis many people were looking for anyway to earn a few extra dollars and we’re willing to do anything to do so, however in today’s more robust economy I don’t see people completing all of the steps to effectively make $15-$20 an hour but more on that later. After I reluctantly completed all of the on boarding steps I must say that Taskrabbit does have a well-crafted employee training process and if you do go through it you will come out the other end understanding how to use their app and also learning a little bit about how to run your own handyman service. I was stunned to learn that Taskrabbit takes a 30% cut of all your work, yes that’s right. A full 1/3 of your earnings and it gets worse, later I found out that they also charge the consumer 8% on their end so Taskrabbit is taking almost 40% of all of the revenue flowing through their platform. This is probably another reason why the platform hasn’t been doing very well as I cannot imagine there’s that much margin to take that big of a bite out of it these are jobs they help facilitate. By comparison Rover takes 15-20% Uber 20% GreenPal 5%.In my experience. From the moment I initially signed up to when I completed my first task was about two weeks of time, which is a little bit faster turnaround than what I have experience on other gig related platforms however still quite a long period of time to sit idle and half to recapture my interest to want to complete tasks on the platform. After I completed all of the on-boarding I sought to download the specialized task rabbit Tasker app, this in and of itself was quite a complicated step. You see... Taskrabbit doesn’t have an actual app in the App Store for it’s suppliers you have to use and find a special link and then go into your phone's configuration settings and trust Taskrabbit as a developer. I know... the whole thing sounds complicated and even as a product developer myself I had to watch a video to teach me how to do this. I can’t imagine that thousands of people get through this complicated little step however that’s the way it was built.Next, I will discuss the earning potential after I became a supplier on the taskrabbit platform. Simply stated, as compared to other gig related at Taskrabbit felt kind of like a ghost town after I became and anointed Tasker. I did complete a few tasks with some friends and family to get a feel for how the app worked, however over the course of a few months I did not get one inquiry from any people in my area looking for to pay people for all jobs around their home. All in all I would’ve been pretty upset if I had spent $30 to join the platform and 6 to 7 hours of my time becoming a Tasker then not receive one opportunity organically for on some extra moneySo overall earning potential on TaskRabbit gets an F minus as that did not drive me much of any opportunities to earn extra revenue. As compared to other gig related apps like Rover for dog walking where I receive daily opportunities to walk dogs and care for pets, Sadly, I did not receive any opportunities on TaskRabbit for several weeks and had to ask friends and family to hire me to test drive the technology.Lastly, I will evaluate the TaskRabbit platform on supplier assistance, and ensuring supplier success. As it turns out, I was really surprised about the lack of technological assistance at the app afforded me as a supplier on the platform. In a nutshell really Taskrabbit is a way for homeowners to connect with local handyman but after that there’s not much to it. Put another way, its basically is just a chat app layered on top of a way to find a handyman. That’s right, there are no workflows or processes to complete work on the platform. Basically you were thrown into a chat screen and left to negotiate terms and cover your rear end. After that it’s up to you to be there on time. I was also surprised that there was no check in and check out on the app to monitor time, nor geo-locating to make sure I was at the right place to perform my work. Simply stated the technology did nothing to modulate the experience for the homeowner or the supplier.Think about it. It would be like getting an Uber and then just texting with your driver about how much it is going to cost and when and where they are going to pick you up. TR does get some slack because its so broad with what you can use it for, fair enough , however, the app (while gorgeously designed) did absolutely nothing to provide workflows for either party to work through nor ensure that the experience was being contained and moved along smoothly. Basically it’s a notch above getting hired on craigslist except you give up 30% of your earningsOn top of all of that I was left on my own to create a positive looking presence on the TaskRabbit platform. Other gig related marketplaces will constantly assist you in boosting the appearance of your profile on their marketplace, however sadly it was really crickets after I signed up on TaskRabbit.Overall I give Taskrabbit an F- for supplier assistance and integrating processes to ensure my success on their platform. While the mobile app does have some nice dashboards for metrics around your earnings and how you were doing etc. overall it’s pretty weak as compared to other experiences I’ve had with gig related apps ensuring that I am going to earn enough money on their platform to make it worth my timeIn conclusion, sadly Taskrabbit is an example of beautifully designed well executed technology on top of a weak value proposition. Put another way the app is not much better or different than hiring somebody on craigslist, or offering services for sale on craigslist. The lack of workflows or any sort of modulated experience nudging the user along to do what they are supposed to do is probably one reason why ultimately Taskrabbit did not take off become a ubiquitous success. I would not recommend it if you’re looking to earn extra money or grow your business as a handyman or “Tasker “as the net net earnings were pretty low after the 30% fee, and the opportunities are pretty slim.
