The relationship between South Korea and the US was irretrievably broken when the US completely backed Japan in the recent Japan South Korea spat.It was one thing for the US to demand a more than fivefold increase for keeping troops in South Korea, that was only money - 5 billion to be sure and VERY hard to afford. But when the US sided with Japan and basically told South Korea to “Get over” the slaughter that occured in WW2 and the lack of Japanese contrition, now that made their blood boil.Consequently South Korea is in talks with China to provide military security in the region. This will affect the US for sure - they’ll have to clear out. But so far as South Korea goes, their relationship with the US has gone south some time ago. The security agreement with China is just the consequence of that poor relationship.Foreign policy is usually quite nuanced and frankly, beyond the capabilities of the current US administration.
