I would say that letters of recommendation are usually the single most important part of an application to graduate school. Most applicants, just out of college, have not yet established a record of amazing research. Rather, it’s usually based on potential. And a student can’t really prove their own potential in a statement of purpose. Instead we depend on the assessment of other established faculty who’ve watched that student work.I’ve never written a *negative* recommendation. It’s never happened (because students generally have a rough idea of how they’ve done with me) but if a student for whom my recommendation would be negative were to ask, I would decline. I’ve also never seen an extreme case (such as academic dishonesty) where I would be motivated to write without the student’s permission. There have however been many cases in which I’ve told a student “My recommendation will be positive, but not positive enough to get you into a top tier program. It could serve as backup support for a really strong letter, but won’t stand alone.” Many students have confirmed that they want that letter, and I have provided it.
