PDF Editor FAQ

Will you share some experiences on arranged marriage meetings?

This happened with my Sister-in-Law.My wife has 4 sisters and the one I’m talking about is 3rd youngest. She cracked the entrance exam for a major government bank and got job. Her first posting was at a station which is very near to Mohali and hence she would come over to stay with us on weekends. Now there was a female manager in the same bank who had 2 sons of marriageable age. She used to scan through the photographs of new joinees in the Bank’s CRM system in hope of finding brides for her sons. She found my SIL’s pic and called her. She asked my SIL for her Dad’s number so that she could discuss the possiblity of a marriage alliance.I learnt about all this from my wife. She called me at office, gave me a brief idea and asked me to come home a bit early. My wife was a bit too excited as if a marriage proposal had come from Hrithik Roshan. Se told me with great excitement that their whole family was employed in the same bank and how great it would be for her sister. My bad-luck was that this family stayed just 2 streets away from our home. My in-laws put the onus on us to go and have the first meeting. I was reluctant because as a matter of policy I do not get involved in alliance making matters. My wife had already called them and told that we would be coming over at about 7pm. But, that family could not wait till 7 pm and at 6:15, the would be groom was at our door step to fetch us. I was livid and when I saw the guy I was livid with my wife as well. He was no match for my SIL and his mannerisms clearly indicated that he had “issues”. I conveyed my doubts to my wife but she dismissed my skeptism in her excitement. There is something about marriages that drives women crazy especially if their siblings are involved. What I found wierd, my wife found to be cute and sweet. When we reached their house we were greeted by their 4 dogs and rest of the family( 2 sons and parents). They were all wierdos. Soft drinks and snacks were served . We all were supposed to feed the dogs first and get photographs clicked. The father sat next to me with a 2 litre Coke bottle. As soon as I would take a sip from my glass he would immediatly fill the glass again. It happened 3–4 times and I got irriatated. I asked him if I was supposed to drink the whole 2 litres. My wife darted a poisnous look at me indicating for me to behave. My SIL was made to sit next to the guy who seemed to be hypnotized by my SIL’s face. He was just staring at her and was smiling in a stupid manner. My wife was over the moon for 2 reasons. First, her sister was getting married and Second-for the first time in her life she had been bestowed such enormous responsibilities. She was just not noticing the wierdness on display. It was about 8pm when I asked my wife to wrap-up things. She told me that we were supposed to have dinner at their house and we could leave only after that. We were a actually not talking but smsing each other. I told her that I hadn’t seen anyone cooking and she replied that may be they were going to order. She was right and I was in a state of shock when the food arrived. Pizzas from Dominoz. Yes, the 4 small size Pizza combo that used to come for around 250 bucks. The same combo. We came back around 9pm. My wife declared that It was an awesome match. They had their own “Kothi”, no SIL and all 4 members in the same bank. They also had 4 cars for 4 family members and had told my wife that her sister could get her own car financed from the bank. Now a family that has a parking space for 5 cars in a big city has to be rich.I had my own apprehensions. I declared that the boy was a psycho and they whole family was crazy. My wife of course disagreed with me. The Roka ceremony was held the next week. My suspicions about the ‘psycho” family were deepened further. They told us that they had built this house in 1985, which meant that they were living there for about 30 years. However, no neighbours or relatives barring one “Mamaji” was present for the Roka ceremony. When we were leaving around 6pm, there were many neighbours of theirs present in the street, but no pleasantries or greetings were exchanged with anyone. The boy, once again kept staring at my SIL and kept smiling for no apparent reason. He had almost every toy at home including XBox, Video games, Piano, Guitar etc but no friends. Same for his brother. I found the whole set up very strange. The next 2 weeks were hell for me. They would first call up and ask us to comeover. If we hesitated, within next 10 minutes they would be at our place. I was beginning to miss my privacy. I was trying to reason it out with my wife but she was not ready to listen. Even my SIL was not ready to backout as by now all her friends and colleagues knew about the “Rishta”. I gave up.It was a Saturday and It was my week-off. I had decided to sleep till late. My wife was in her office. At about 11am the whole family arrived and looked very very upset. They wanted to talk to me. I asked them to talk to my wife as she was in charge of affairs but they wanted to discuss an urgent matter with me.Aunty Ji- Vishal ji, ‘R’ has taken a Rs. 50000 loan.Me- So ?Aunty Ji- She will be paying an EMI of 4000, She pays about 6000 as Room rent and She also sends money to her parents ( The lady was obviously keeping close watch on my SIL’s bank statement )Me- So?Aunty Ji - Saade Palle ki paya je saari salary kudi ne is tarah hi udani hai. Naukri waali kudi da assi ki kariye je onne ghar kuch laike hi nai aana ( what do we gain out of this if the girl is going to squander her salary in this manner. Why do we need a working girl if she is not going to bring home any money).I conveyed the same to my wife and now she began to understand the whole matter. The boy used to call or meet my SIL and then report the whole conversation to his mom word-to-word. She produced all bills and demanded a refund from us when the alliance was called off. She even had details like how many ice creams and momos they had together. They had gifted a digital diary to the would be bride and it was also returned. We heaved a sigh of relief for this narrow escape. My SIL’s life would have been hell and I and my wife would have been a collateral damage. The boy showed some sick tendencies after this incident. He kept calling my FIL non-stop for 4–5 days. When I say Non-stop, I mean non-stop. He kept messaging us and telling us how much he loved “R”. We had to change our phone numbers. I was not very lucky though as I would bump into him frequently somewhere or the other. It would become difficult to get rid of him as he would sob openly.Later, we learnt that his mother found another girl for him and this news came as a big relief. But then we learnt from my landlady that he fled from the marriage ceremony right before “pheras” as he couldn’t marry anyone other than “R”.My SIL is now happily married :)

A car finance manager snuck in extra charges. What are my options?

Did you read the contract before you signed it? They can’t sneak in extra charges after you sign the contract. The sales person may have presented you with a proposal on paper and have you sign that you agree to it. If the sales contract is different from the proposal tell the finance manager you will not sign the sales contract if it doesn’t have the same amounts as the proposal.

What are the best bargaining techniques when buying a car from a dealer?

My short list of negotiating tactics:UPDATE: I've just added points 6-8. I've tried to keep this list short, but these points (all of which were raised by other answerers in one way or another) need mentioning.1. Don't negotiate. Tell the salesperson and sales manager that you'll sign the paperwork the minute they hit your target figure. Politely decline any counter-offers, give them your phone number, and leave. If the price you've proposed is within the realm of possibility, they'll call you at some point.2. Follow-up on Saturday or Sunday nights an hour before closing time. Call and ask to speak with the salesperson or manager you've spoken to before. Remind them you're a buyer when they meet your figure, but that they shouldn't waste your time if they won't.If your offer is possible, the opportunity to do one more deal before the end of the day might compel them to work with you...especially if the dealership is having a bad weekend.3. Follow-up on the last day of the month. Again, salespeople and managers are often under pressure to find one more deal before the month ends. A deal that didn't make sense on the 25th might make sense on the 31st if the month hasn't met expectations.4. Follow-up on days that have had terrible weather. A major snowstorm, a day of wind and rain, etc. can dramatically affect car sales. Call and remind the salesperson or manager that you're happy to come down when they meet your offer. Again, the fact that they're not selling cars might get them to bend in your favor.5. Rinse, wash and repeat. Do the same process concurrently with a couple of other dealers in your area. Make sure they have the car you want, and then give them their mission.6. Know what a car is worth. If you're buying a new car, Edmunds.com and TrueCar.com provide "true market" estimates that are reasonably accurate. If you're buying a used car, KBB.com is a great resource, as it will tell you both retail value and wholesale (aka trade-in) value. My suggestion is to try and buy a new car for $500-$1000 less than true market value. This is aggressive, but assuming that you've got time and you're willing to work the phone, you can often find a dealership willing to dip into their holdback (financial reserve) to make one more deal.If you're buying a used car, I'd try for a 10-15% discount off of wholesale (trade-in) value. It's damn difficult, but every now and then a dealer will take a car in on trade at below market value. If you make this kind of aggressive offer, you might get it every now and again.Of course, you can always just offer true market value (new) or wholesale value (used). That will make getting a deal much easier...but what's the fun in that? :-)Hat tip to Doug Dingus7. Secure your own financing if you can. A great way to avoid the drama in the finance office is to get a loan from your local credit union. However, if you're buying a new car and you want to take advantage of a special interest rate (like 0%), you're going to have to work with the dealership's finance person.Quite frankly, I don't see what the big deal is about going through finance. It's true that you're going to be brought into a small room with a very good salesperson, and that he or she is going to pitch you all sorts of stuff. You're an adult. You can handle this. Be polite, but say no to everything. It's not personal, it's just business. If you've got bad credit, the dealership finance office is going to help you out (at least a little bit). However, this doesn't mean you need to do them a favor and buy a warranty or something...just say no.8. Always be polite. In some of the other answers to this question, I've read suggestions about telling the dealer to "take it or leave it," threatening to walk out, etc. This is all bad advice. There are a lot of things that suck about working at a car dealership, not the least of which is being treated like crap by most of the people you deal with. While dealership employees learn how to "warm customers up" - it usually only takes a minute or two to get a stranger to laugh and relax a little - it's emotionally draining. Therefore, when someone starts dictating terms and making threats, most salespeople and sales managers will respond aggressively. It's human nature. Instead of finding a way to make a deal, you'll be told to wait an hour because someone is "on the phone with Japan" (see Leonard Kim's comment here: Answer Comments - Quora). Therefore, be nice and respectful to everyone you deal with. If you're a genuinely nice person, I'm far more likely to do something unusual for you (like selling a car for less than invoice) than I am if you're a grade AAA jerk. What's more, dealerships are now frequently paid on their overall customer satisfaction scores. Polite and courteous customers are far more likely to give a dealership a positive review, and dealers know it. A dealer's worst-case scenario is to cheap sell a car to someone who gives them a lousy review on the manufacturer's satisfaction survey. Not only did you fail to make money, but you get yelled at by the GM or owner for doing a bad job.In closing, the downside to my process is that you might have to buy a car late on a weekend, might have to buy a car during a blizzard, etc., but you'll get the price you want (or at least get closer than you ever thought possible).Good luck!P.S. I know this works. I was a dealership salesperson and/or manager for over 9 years.
