4-H: What is 4-H?

Put simply, 4-H is an organization for youth in grades 1-12 in the United States. The four Hs refer to head, heart, hands, and health; the 4-H pledge explains that 4-H works to develop clearer thinking, greater loyalty, dedication to serving others, and better lifestyles habits. When youth participate in 4-H, they have the opportunity to choose a wide variety of different projects. These projects include grooming, caring for, and showing animals (cattle, dogs, hogs, horses, and more); learning housekeeping skills like cooking, food preservation, designing an appealing home environment, and working with children as they develop; developing safety and future job skills such as cake decorating, proper gun treatment, veterinary skills, and sewing; and many other projects.Through 4-H, youth also have the opportunity to make friends with other youth with similar interests. These friendships promote healthy competition and enable students to learn more than just their close family members or friends might be able to teach them. The clubs in which youth participate also encourage students to become more involved in the community by providing opportunities for serving food, participating in fundraisers, working on landscaping, and much more.My own experience with 4-H had a tremendous impact on my life. I am naturally a quiet person, so 4-H helped me overcome some of my shyness in approaching people. Additionally, I showed cattle; the discipline it took to care for them twice a day as well as working with them so that they did not spook in the show ring will remain with me throughout my life. Junior Leaders is another part of 4-H in which I participated; Junior Leaders is a 4-H club which specifically focuses on community service, especially in preparing for the 4-H fair. This club is probably one of the most important because it allowed me to see how people from many different jobs in the community came together to create a fun fair experience for our county. If you've been invited to be a volunteer and have time, I highly recommend you do so because you never know what impact you'll have on our youth.

Why is the sound a goat makes called bleating?

A goat and/or sheep for that matter will at times sound as though they were saying a prolonged “blaaaaat” or “bleat”. My kids(human) had responsibilities for chores with the animals that they were raising for 4-H projects-one chose an orphan lamb to raise. Guess what he named it-”Map-Map.”! That’s what it sounded like when it wanted a bottle-not a bleat but a drawn out “Maaaaaaap”. We will save the hogs for another time, horses, cattle and burros are easy to mimic!

How do we break the stereotype that 4-H is just for "farmkids?"

We had a "girls club" and "boys club" - I was in both. The "girls club" covered the cooking, crafts etc and the other was animal related - beef, vet science, horses etc. Showing the other less 'visible' projects - the baking, cooking, speaking competitions and other things as much as the champion steer etc is a step towards getting the word out. We bemoan people don't cook anymore - 4-H teaches cooking as well as gardening and other things.
