Which non-Ivy League schools does Wall Street mostly recruit from?

If you looked at the schools represented in each newly hired class of entry-level analysts across the major Wall Street firms, you’d find they numbered in the hundreds. The Ivy League itself comprises just eight universities, so clearly there are a lot of people getting jobs on Wall Street that didn’t attend an Ivy.The above said, among some of the most elite and sought-after positions, the intake is at least a little narrower. But it goes far beyond the Ivy League. Among the non-Ivy League universities that tend to be most strongly represented in these top-flight programs, private institutions include:StanfordMITDukeNYUChicagoNorthwesternNotre DameAnd on the public/state side:UC BerkeleyUniversity of Michigan (Ann Arbor)University of Texas - AustinUniversity of VirginiaUniversity of IllinoisUniversity of Indiana - BloomingtonUniversity of North Carolina - Chapel HillThis is by no means an exhaustive list, but probably covers ‘critical mass’ of the non-Ivy universities that tend to have the strongest track record of placements in top jobs with Wall Street firms.Edit:I should also mention that there are a number of liberal arts colleges that are held in very high regard on Wall Street, and have impressive alumni representation (much of it in influential and senior positions). These schools include:WilliamsMiddleburyAmherstWellesleySwarthmoreHaverfordBentleyBowdoinNot all of these schools are necessarily visited consistently by top Wall Street firms, but resumes from their students will nonetheless receive strong consideration from Wall Street recruiters and managers alike.

Is the University of Virginia an elite school?

Yes.I have followed my alma mater for the many years since I was graduated … and commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy. My experience has been that when I say I am from the University of Virginia, educated people pause and then remark how much they respect my University. There are more fashionably “elite” schools in America, which have private funding and wonderful alumni PR. Virginia gets about 7% of its operating budget from the Commonwealth of Virginia. The rest is from private sources and from sources related to research and scholarship. So, in essence Virginia is a “private” public institution. That it was founded by Thomas Jefferson provides a great deal of pride … and as the years have gone by serious reflection on the stark truth that he was a man of real flaws amid his remarkable genius.Virginia is not and never was a finishing school for southern boys. It is populated with students from all across America and from many foreign nations. In my day New Yorkers were a significant part of the mix. But, the social mix was then and continues to be one of the strengths of the institution. Bright students emerge from all sorts of backgrounds and they understand that Virginia is their launch pad to a successful and productive life.
