As far as serious historians are concerned, the Anunnaki share a similar religious and social niche to the other ancient pantheons in Egypt, Greece and Mesoamerica; mythological beings who inspired humanity with the knowledge of essential skills like farming and the shaping of clay into pottery. But beyond that their existence is as dubious as the existence of Odin or Mars.But the claims they are actually extraterrestrials is largely ungrounded, promoted primarily by non-historian authors like Zecheria Sitchin. A man who also claimed things like Sumerian being the oldest language in the world from which all others are derived and is infamous for his very shoddy attempts to interpret Sumerian tablets and seals. For instance, interpreting that Ea (or Enki) - who historians understand to be the Sumerian-Akkadian god of water, wisdom and the crafts - was the god of mining and the director of the Annunaki’s efforts to mine the Earth for gold.I don’t claim to be an expert on Sumerian art but I’m pretty sure that’s water with fish dancing around Ea centre-right. If he’s god of mining, what’s he doing playing with fish?Which actually raises an issue pointed out by William Irwin Thompson in his 1998 publication Coming into Being: Artifacts and Texts in the Evolution of Consciousness: For such an advanced society, the technology involved in these images comes across a bit too literally. Almost like something out of a cheesy B-movie at times.What Sitchin sees is what he needs for his hypothesis. So figure 15 on page 40 is radiation therapy, and figure 71 on page 136 is a god inside a rocket-shaped chamber. If these are gods, why are they stuck with our cheap B movie technology of rockets, microphones, space-suits, and radiation therapy? If they are gods, then why can't they have some really divine technology such as intradimensional worm-hole travel, antigravity, starlight propulsion, or black hole bounce rematerializations? Sitchin has constructed what appears to be a convincing argument, but when he gets close to single images on ancient tablets, he falls back into the literalism of "Here is an image of the gods in rockets."The pictures below are how we mine for gold today. It’s one of the ways we have been digging for it for the past sixty to a hundred years.Mines today can be serious operations. As well as digging shafts deep into the earth, they can be big pits of dredged earth with broad tracks to the bottom to provide easy access for trucks with wheels as big as a person. They’ll be machines that scoop, load and dump several tonnes at a time.The question this begs is… where the hell is the evidence for this kind of mining operation? Where are their machine shops? Their rubble tips? Signs of heavy machinery to move all this heavy material like tyre tracks or excavation marks?Presumably, if the Annunaki are extraterrestrials on a spacefaring gold rush, why exactly were their methods apparently lacking in heavy machinery? Think about it, what mining equipment could be possible by an extraterrestrial civilisation capable of crossing interstellar distances in times that is practical. They could have machinery or techniques that make our modern drills and conveyors look positively primitive. They would have access to veins too deep even for us, maybe they could have mined gold in the mantle. Not to mention there are thousands of rocks in space with high and easily accessible concentrations just floating around.Sitchin’s hypothesis for the Annunaki coming to earth to mine gold banks on the idea a society with science capable of granting human-level intelligence to large multi-cellular beings and going into orbit with impunity was mining for gold with trained monkeys and pickaxes. Did the ancient Sumerians (or any ancient civilisation) just omit the house-sized carts they loaded the ore into when they created pictures of their ancient history? Are we missing a tablet that shows what could be imagined as a 21st century boring machine? Was there any device that could have made all this look puny that we just haven’tr deciphered yet?The California and Canadian Gold Rushes may have started with independent teams panning in the rivers and later digging, but once there was clear evidence for gold, those claims tended to be bought out by investors running a more serious mining consortium who set up networks of sluices, conveyors, sorting sheds, and basically set up an industrial zone to dig up as much gold as possible as quickly a possible.If aliens came to the Earth of old they’d probably do this too. They’d likely bring machines that can work ten times faster than a human with a pick with no need to rest. And even if they did uplift humans, they would have trained them to use tools we might recognise? They would have set up machine shops for on-site maintenance and would be providing tools and machines because damn it we’re here for the pay-dirt.We have yet to find evidence the Sumerian mining operations were anywhere close to the scale. A venture by such an advanced civilisation could only feasibly resemble a copper-age empire if it was the interstellar equivalent of five guys and their boat venturing into uncharted lands to strike it rich.Historians generally take seriously the artwork of ancient cultures because for these societies, fable and true history are kind of a blur. What they don’t take seriously are wild hypotheses that various artworks featuring ancient gods are chronicles of early humanity under the yoke of some ancient alien empire.
