I've seen/received enough roasts by teachers over the years, but one really sticks in the front of my mind:After two years of work, we were barreling fast towards our upcoming GCSE exams. The students were stressed. The teachers were stressed. Everyone was, understandably, stressed. I have always been a well-behaved and hard-working student. My respect for teachers was always unbound; my Mum always used to joke that I took their words as Gospel. Yet I had this one teacher, my GCSE History teacher, who was an enigma unto herself. She'd exuded this posh air, as though she was doing us a favour by gracing us with her very presence.I - being the model student - had been a favourite of hers since she'd taught me in First Year. Now, five years later, things had changed. I have to use a laptop in my exams and lessons, and she had become convinced that I was mucking around. This was not the case, and my consistent high grades in written homework and timed class essays, did not sway her of this opinion. She was rude and dismissive to the entire class as well. God help anyone if they asked a question.Two years of bullying the entire class came to a head about two months before the exams. There was one particular boy that she had a fixation on; if there was anything she could do to pick on him, she'd find a way to do it. Every. Single. Lesson.Over the previous few weeks, she'd dismissed every question he had asked (genuine questions. He'd struggled to understand some of the content), and frequently called him 'stupid'. After every lesson and in passing, the boy would make it clear how he felt about the teacher: she had scuppered his initial love of history, as she'd done to others in the class. She'd made him feel like crap for months.In this particular lesson, she was droning on in her monotonous voice (the most unimaginative lessons), when he sneezed. Sneezed. Which any person with half a brain could ascertain was an involuntary bodily function. Not to this woman. Her eyes bulged out of her heavy make-up; her penciled eyebrows raised in shock, her mouth slack. Anyone would've thought she'd just been slapped.The following explosion was something that I will never forget. She began screaming in the boy's face...it felt like it went on for an eternity. She screamed in her soprano voice: "How dare you sneeze in my class. You disgusting child. Idiot. Moron. Get out. Get out. Go to the front office. Now." After weeks of sending him out of the classroom for something as simple as a yawn, she screamed at the boy to be sent to the Headmaster's office. He rose silently, hung his head, and slumped out of the door. We were all stunned.When the boy returned, the teacher resumed her controlled demeanor, but no amount of badly applied make-up could hide her scathing looks. About fifteen minutes later, the boy (despite desperately trying to avoid what came next), coughed. As he finished coughing, we could all see the horror in his wide brown eyes. Predictably, the crazy woman started screeching again. He remained silent, and tears began to brim at the corner of his eyes. He reacted just as before, silent and still. Until he'd decided that enough was enough. He jumped out of his seat, tears swimming his eyes, and hyperventilating. He stood his ground - albeit shaking - and said: "Enough! Please, just stop. Just stop." At that point, he grabbed his backpack, swung it onto his back, and stormed out of the classroom to find our Head of Year and complain (naturally, we all backed him up).We found out later (after further weeks of bullying), that the teacher had always been a bit mean, but really let herself go for it due to her impending retirement. Regardless, student's can't control natural bodily functions (the sneeze and cough were genuine, no exaggeration on the boy's part), and by dismissing his honest questions, she made that boy lose his self-confidence, and made him believe he was stupid.He never came back to another History lesson.
