Personally, I would say this is because very poor levels of psychotherapy training are wide-spread. Trainings produce a lot of people not remotely suitable for the work of psychotherapy.Worse still, licensing boards (which are supposed to regulate the practitioner’s continued professional development) get formed on the same basis: low level of clinical and theoretical expertise and near zero capacity for reflection.So, as an outcome, they ‘regulate’ very little, mostly focusing on policing the feelings and pronouncing all variations of the latter irrevocably dangerous. This is what very poorly trained therapists, governed by their licensing boards, call ‘boundaries’. To answer your question, they get uncomfortable because they are convinced that expressions of feelings in psychotherapy means ‘crossing the boundaries’.These therapists are not capable of the symbolic thinking nor they are capable of being an object of the client’s feelings as a part of exploration and healing.One lady (of twenty three years of practice!) wrote an angry comment to my answer, telling me, with much pride, how well she keeps her clients “out of harm’s way” by “immediately referring them” should they develop any feelings towards her as their therapist! All with the support and under instruction of her licensing board - of which she was a member. Need more be said?..So, yes - extremely poor level of training and general education within the field of psychotherapy would be the culprit.

A trainer is responsible for the instruction and safety of his U/I. Letting a trainee get in a bad situation - let alone deliberately setting it up - is not only bad training but would get the trainer in deep trouble and probably lose him his Checker qual to boot. It’s routine to film flight deck evolutions for U/Is. It’s too noisy to provide much verbal feedback in real time, so recording it lets the trainer go over the evolution with the U/I later.
