I could hardly believe it.)So, when you come to Scotland, just fill the tank, then pay. It's logical to us.Secondly, price. Budget for your fuel in your holiday allowance. It's going to come as a shock. I remember the fuss in the USA when the price rocketed to $1 a gallon. We were already paying four times that.It's NOT gas. Petrol is a liquid. It's in a gravity tank under your car. Ask for petrol, or diesel, if it's not petrol. A hire car is unlikely to be LPG.Oh, I almost forgot UNITS.Welcome to the 21st Century. Nobody uses 'English Units'. Not even the English. We measure liquids in litres. (Which you mis-spell 'liters'.) A small car (sorry, compact) holds about 50 litres; a large car 70 litres. It costs me £80 to fill my VW Passat. That's over $100!And it wouldn't help if it was gallons. Because you messed up when you crossed the Atlantic. Somewhere in that crossing, someone forgot that there were 8 pints in a gallon, and made up a new ratio of 6 pints to the gallon, so your gallons are smaller than our gallons - which we don't use any more anyway.*Other than that, refuelling in Scotland is the same.Be safe. And remember that we drive on the wrong side of the road.Notes:*Thank you to all the people who reminded me that it's not the gallon that changes when it takes an Atlantic crossing, it's the pint. An American pint is only 16floz. The British pint is 20floz. There are 8 US pints in a US gallon. But that's just over 6 Imperial pints.And thank you to all the people who said that the inconvenience of having to go into the filling station office is now largely in the past, due to credit card technology. But that's not the point. Your still providing your means of payment up front. In Scotland, you'll be trusted to fill the tank and then pay. It's about trust.Amendment: I've been informed that non-American credit cards can't be used at the pump. (Maybe because they're viewed as un-American credit cards? I don't know.) So we foreigners will still have to guess how much fuel to pay for and pay in advance.Here's another example. I took 6 people to a restaurant in Edinburgh that I'd never been to before. (It was recommended.) I was paying for the meal and put down my credit card for the £160 bill. The owner apologetically informed me that he only took cash. I didn't have nearly enough cash, so he asked if I was still going to be in Edinburgh the following day. As I was he told me to come back and hand it in then.
