How did your life look at 18?
Here is a pictorial biography:I was born in 1949 at Palakkad in Kerala but we migrated to Mumbai soon after my birth and I spent all my childhood, boyhood and early teens in Mumbai. This is probably the first picture ever taken of me when I was just some months old. From all accounts, I was a happy baby and didn’t trouble my mom too much. That’s me, below, at the age of four. We lived in a small two room flat in Sion Mumbai. I don’t know why I was closing my eye when the snap was taken. I had not yet started going to school. I went to school only at the age of 6. Till then I played in the mud and sand piles at construction sites around my house. I still have memories of this. It was perhaps 1953. There were no play-schools, pre-schools, or kid care centres. LKG and UKG had just become fashionable in cities. In most cases kids just enjoyed being mischievous till the age of 6, when harried parents finally packed them off to school and considered the fees well spent. No donations, no interviews. We just went to the nearby school and filled up a form and from next day an aayaah would come home and escort us to school which was mostly walking distance. No one bothered about the schools ‘snob value’. That came later. English medium schools began to be fancied. Till then regional language medium schools flourished. That’s me, below at around the age of 6 or 7. We moved to King’s Circle, Matunga, Mumbai. I had just started school. I remember fighting for my share of my time in the only tricycle we had in the building. We also played marbles in the mud and I remember practicing to write with a slate and a piece of chalk, the alphabets that we learned in school and proudly reciting Ba Ba black sheep to the delight of my mother who never went to an English school and could not speak in English those days. That’s me below at the age of 8 or 9 perhaps. My voracious reading habit had resulted in my eyes getting weaker and I had just started wearing glasses. Those days Harry Potter was unknown. I read Enid Blyton and have read every single one she wrote. TV did not exist. Radio was popular. We flew kites, and played street cricket with tennis balls, Lagori, Hide and seek, marbles, gulli danda and kabaddi. At home my grandparents, would narrate the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and the stories from Panchatantra, Puranas, Krishnavatara and the like. That’s me with my parents. We were at the airport to see off my Dad on his maiden trip to Europe on official work. This was in 1961 when I was 11And below is how I looked in my final year in school. This picture was taken to affix on my hall ticket that permitted me to appear for the SSC examination and I also used this in my identity card while studying in First Year Science at Elphinstone College Mumbai. The picture was taken in 1966 when I was 17This is how I looked at 18, when I came home for the first time on vacation from BITS Pilani in 1967If this pictorial biography interested you, try exploring my life further in pictures. In response to another question earlier, I had written something similar and continue well beyond the age of 18 that this question asks about.Gopalkrishna Vishwanath's answer to What did Quorans look like as children? It had proved to be a very popular post with 125K views and over 11.6K upvotes.GV
Should psychologists be board certified in order to treat a personality disorder and those that suffer from PD abuse?
Is it useful to require that therapists be board certified in order to treat personality disorders? No, it is counterproductive to require that psychologists and other mental health clinicians be Board Certified in order to treat personality disorders. we already have a severe shortage of therapists trained to diagnose and treat people with personality disorders. If we create a system where therapists have to be board certified, we will end up with even fewer psychotherapists who are eligible to treat personality disorders. So what might actually help?I believe that we should introduce all licensed mental health professionals to the diagnosis and treatment of the three most common personality disorders—Borderline, Narcissistic, and Schizoid Adaptations—during their training for their degree. For example, to get my undergraduate degree (BA) in psychology, I was required to take a year of statistics and a course in physiological psychology. If we are required to take these courses for our degree, why not also require an introductory course on personality disorders?I would also suggest that graduate level mental health programs add a somewhat more advanced course on the diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders. This way we could guarantee that every future clinician would have had a minimum of two courses that gives them a basic knowledge of personality disorders. Many mental health practitioners have school loans and need to go to work immediately. Very few of them will have the necessary motivation, financial ability, or free time to continue for an additional 3–5 year advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders. Those that do will become our future experts in the area. And even this group may be reluctant to jump through all the additional hoops necessary to get Board Certified.By the way, Board Certification is not common in the mental health field. It is much more characteristic of specialties taught in medical school, such as dermatology, etc.Is it useful to require Board Certification for mental health professionals who treat people who have experienced abuse by people who have personality disorders? Here are some basic reasons why it is not particularly useful or practical to require clinicians who treat abuse to be Board Certified:Almost every mental health clinician is already treating people abused by people with personality disorders. That is the largest part of most people’s practice. There is nothing essentially new about this idea. Freud’s whole theory that childhood traumas lead to adult psychological problems stated that fact without mentioning the term personality disorders. There are so many different forms of abuse that there is no single technique to teach that would be relevant to all of them. There are all sorts of different approaches to abuse and trauma. Most take a minimum of 1–3 years to learn. Very few therapists will have the time, interest, energy, or finances to learn more than one or two.Everyone is different. An approach that works with one client may be useless to another.Punchline: The best way to ensure that all mental health clinicians learn about personality disorders is to make it a required part of their undergraduate and graduate training. Adding another introductory course on the diagnosis and treatment of various forms of abuse would at least ensure that all clinicians have some basic knowledge of how to recognize and treat people suffering from abuse.A2AElinor Greenberg, PhD, CGPIn private practice in NYC and the author of the book: Borderline, Narcissistic, and Schizoid Adaptations.www.elinorgreenberg.co
Is coaching needed for the preparation of the DU JAT?
Maybe there is no one better than me to answer this.I gave DU JAT without any coaching. I bought by the publisher Arihant and just practiced the Maths portion that too in the last 10 days before the exam.(PS :1. My GK is good because I am always into various stuff and I research about things and I also read newspaper 'cause you need something to timepass when you poop, lol.2. My English is good 'cause I was in an English medium school and also since childhood I am into English TV series, movies and songs.3. Since childhood I have given several competitive exams so my logical reasoning was good so I didn't practiced it.)Then the results came!I got BA (Hons) Business Economics a.k.a BBE and the day I got the admission slip I was over the moon. I was so happy about the fact that I got one of the only 3 professional commerce courses present in DU. I left Bcom (Hons) and took admission in it. The 3 courses provided by DU JAT are one of the best and most reputed courses when compared to all other courses present in DU.And if I can crack DU JAT without coaching then you can too.The only thing that you need to do is BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.All the best.
