According to one survey, the ten most prestigious professions in USA in decreasing order are: Doctor; Military Officer; Fire Fighter; Scientist; Nurse; Engineer; Police Officer; Priest; Architect; Teacher.A survey in Canada found that the following professions are most respected: Nurse; Doctor; Scientist; Farmer; Veterinarian; Architect; Teacher; Engineer; Accountant; Dentist.In most developed countries or egalitarian societies, the list would be similar. Civil servants (except police) will never figure in the list in such countries. Some reasons are: Public services are available without difficulty. One does not have to know or plead a public servant to get one’s work done; People choose their professions on the basis of their capabilities, education or what they like and not on the basis of what others think of the profession; Civil service is not rocket science. So, the brightest choose other professions; Civil service in these countries is not synonymous with ‘influence’, ‘power’ or ‘high nuisance value.’As a country becomes more prosperous, the role of government in a common man’s life decreases. Civil servants are supposed to be background workers and facilitators and that’s the role they play in developed countries. However, when the society is hierarchical, civil servants and the ‘ruling class’ may continue to have a significant role in the country. In India, we have also inherited the system from the colonial times when civil service was the main machinery which ran the country. Therefore, civil service continues to be one of the most sought after and prestigious professions in India. And this will continue to be so in near future.

I do not recall any Austrian generals being proficient artillerymen.Infact, you know, I’m struggling to think of any famous general who was specifically slain by a noted and named individual on the other side.Just these examples from my Western-centric knowledge should tell you all you need to know. The vast majority of famous executioners in warfare aren’t recorded in the history books. Just some stupid boy who got told ‘you’re going’, or some young fool who decided he’d rather get shot at then spend a lifetime as a farmer. Yet, they also get really fucking good at their jobs over enough time, and those who survive sometimes get to take a toll on the chaps who order them forward.Want an uncomfortable truth? Battlefields are really shitty, loud, horrible places. People vomit, they shit themselves, they cry, and they generally get in the way. It’s really hard to find your arch nemesis and enact a duel of the fates. Sometimes, they get trampled to death. Sometimes, they get shot through the fucking skull while surveying the defences. Half the time, they get caught out in the wrong place, their bodyguards get slaughtered, then another nobleman hammers their skull in from behind and stamps on their head. Which is exactly what happened to Henry V’s brother, Thomas of Lancaster.Even in the First World War…hell, especially in the First World War, generals were biting it. The British in particular liked their officers to actually know what the bloody hell they were fighting over, so they regularly surveyed the ground. Awfully close to the thousands of German snipers and artillerymen who had no stars on their labels, but a load of training and some pretty good guns. Hell, Lord Kitchener got killed by a sea mine. One of the most broad, general ways to die. Can’t quite imagine Kaiser Wilhelm rubbing his hands together as he heaved that one charge over the side, can you?Most of history, it could be quite difficult to kill a leading figure on the other side. Not because he sat at the back, but because he would be rich, well trained, and surrounded by blokes who had one profession: killing you. Yet, when those same blokes got overwhelmed, it tended to be by their counterparts. Nobodies. Retainer knights. Household troops. Slave soldiers. Folk without a name to stamp on the history books. Weird thing is, that didn’t stop them.

I have never seen a clown in real life, but my general feelings, based off movies and TV is that they are creepy and horrific if you think about them too long; the profession itself, I feel, is a symbol of an older more magical but less scientific world that is now dying out.
