PDF Editor FAQ

Why would someone choose Florida Atlantic University over Caltech?

I took a few classes at FAU, mostly in the math department, and did a research project with a professor there. If you are good enough to get into Caltech, professors at FAU will treat you very well. They will be happy to get to know you individually, offer you career advice, and even work with you on research. You will probably get excellent letters of reference if you remain ambitious and motivated, and if you find the right professors it's not too difficult to publish a couple papers. You could also do that at Caltech, but professors will appreciate you a lot more at FAU.(It helps to go for the small graduate level classes and talk to the professors after class. If you're good enough to be a Caltech student you can probably take those freshman or sophomore year.)The work is a lot easier at FAU, which can be a good thing because if you want to focus on research or side projects, you can choose to take an average courseload and funnel your energy into unrelated pursuits. But you can still take challenging classes if you really want to, and if you can't find what you like you can always ask professors for an independent study. And as Giordon mentioned, Florida offers generous financial aid to the well-prepared.

Is Florida Atlantic University right for me? I don't party much and serious about studies. When I search for FAU, what comes out are details about late night parties, alcoholism, and drugs. Will I be a mismatch?

You already have a few reservations about Florida Atlantic University. If you realize during your first semester that FAU isn’t the place your want to spend the next four years, then seek out some other options and work on a couple of transfer applications. I would recommend earning as a high a GPA as possible while at FAU. In most cases, the higher the cumulative GPA, the better odds a transfer institution will admit you. Investigate financial aid for transfer students at the schools you are thinking about transferring to. Investigate potential issues with late night parties, alcoholism, and drug use at the transfer institution. NOTE: These are potential issues at virtually all college and universities, including ones like Harvard.

How is Florida international university reputation?

FIU is good, and respectable.I attended FIU, Florida International University around 1998. I was in the Dance department at the South Campus, sweetwater area, not the North Miami location.I believe their reputation is acceptable. I had friends who majored in biology and went on to graduate school, became doctors.I noticed many of the staff did not speak English, like the uniformed grounds keepers. Most students spoke Spanish in the common areas, however most professors gave the class in English, even if they struggled with English not being thier native language. Sometimes they would make a joke in Spanish. Bi-linguals will have an advantage. So, I would recommend FIU to anyone who gets a partial or full scholarship, or the pell grant, or institutional grant. Since the price per credit is highter than MDCC, I would reccommend those on a budget to attend Miami-dade (community) college, MDC for the 1st 2 years, and transfer any credits, if self paying. The administration will ask for transcripts. I was accepted, and registered. I spent $160/month on gas commuting, now price would be double, from Pembroke Pines. I put my tuition on a credit card. The dance scholarships were by audition only for 2nd year students. MDCC gave me free tuition, so I went there after. Broward College offers 3 four year degrees (computer science, nursing, education). If FIU has your major it is definately worth taking a tour to check it out. I am back in college as a zoology major. I will be touring UF school of veterinary medicine campus. I am years away from knowing if I will be able to attend grad school, (grades, GRE, Gmat, MCAT, LSAT etc) but I want to. I will be going to college later in life. I am 39, and most likely will be 50’s by the time I complete. I love lifelong learning. I also want to take some classes in industrial design. I am a mixed medium designer, and art foundation classes, drawing, color, softwear, etc.I am interested in being a science educator. Some science classes can be taken online for free, for credit (MIT). You can get department specific financial aid, so check out the specific building where your major is and the department head offices.FIU has a performing arts theatre hall, a black box theatre, and a class room studio beyond the gym. They built facilities specific to my major. They only thing I didn’t like, is that technically I was a musical theare major, and the music, drama, and dance were all totally separate specialties, no blending. So I left and went to NWSA/MDC after 1 year. I remember the photography lab. Back then parking was free. Florida has a system where all the course codes transfer in state, so as long as you graduate with the last 20 credits from that institution you can get the degree, no matter where you took classes. Not all colleges offer the same course code, so some will just be added to your electives list. For freshman year, ENC1101 and 1102, Algebra, etc, it really doesn’t matter where you go, in state. For me, Musical Theatre or MUSIC, I ended up with more credits than I needed. I take classes based on interest not on just what the degree requires.FIU had a cafeteria, and an art gallery and I remember going to graduation. Personally, I enjoyed it. I learned alot. I think FIU is not as “presitgious” as ivy league names, but it is competitive in terms of the quality of education you will recieve. You can sometimes look up professors and choose between them, some classes are offered by more than 1 at different times. I liked being able to ask my professors questions after class. Now that I have a different/expanded interest, Animal Science, I am looking for a program that is specific to my philosophy on animal ethics and wildlife managment. I might be a wildlife biology major. I have to talk to the career counselors after admissions to see which program is best for me. In animal sciences, some programs are pro-human (vivisection) and some are pro-animal (veterinary) and I am not interested in working for animal agriculture/food science. I am studying how to design self sustainable wildlife sancuary habitats, so botany and horticulture and forestry. I am a science major. Each university has a different focus. In north FL, FSU, the agriculture science degree is GMO technology. So, since I am into organic, I won’t be relocating there. But you really have to see for yourself. But their dace department was #1, I toured it after high school, as an intern in government. I decided against politics and went onto arts. I am now a law office intern and I lobby for animal rights. I am a nerd. There are a few other dancer/doctors. I am dual major. Science/design. But I don’t know what degree I will earn.I went all the way to NY to look ay NYU and decided on Florida. At the time, FIU had multicultural classes. I took afro cuban dance, and lots of micro specialties, african dance, and afro haitian, modern dance, and estetics, martial arts. I was an athlete. At the end of the day, your resume will either get you a good job or not. I taught dance. FIU was good training for teaching. I still want to teach, just more about anatomy, psysiology, and maybe one day be a professor (age 60) who knows. ;-) FIU is fine. What you have to pay attention to is your major for example, for dancers who wanted to teach at public schools, FIU had a Batchelors of Dance Education, batchelor of arts. NWSA offeres a BFA, Batchelor of Fine Arts, not for teaching exacly, so the dofference is the amount of work. BA vs. BFA NWSA was more classroom hours to graduation, concentration on stage performance, so more physical labor. The dancers at FIU were older and more experienced. NWSA were like me, wanted to dance, but didn’t have all the early training as kids, so we could catch up. I was in the remedial ballet technique. NWSA has a poor graduate retention rate, meaning out of 100 freshmen, maybe 3 actually go the whole 4 years. We got good, and got jobs and left. The ones who graduated were the foreign exchange stuents on full scholarship. The dean of NWSa had a special deal with Taiwan and he imported dancers from Canada as well. I think FIU is built around “International” and student visas are avaiable, but FIU is about interational business trade. The cost might be less than NOVA, Barry, St. Thomas, UM… whatever is closer and affordable.Once you go have lunch on campus, you will either clique or not. I have friends at FAU in Boca.I will go anywhere that fits my schedule. I am not a full time student, I have to work. You need a 4 year degree to get a decent job, i vote do the quickest one. Good luck! ♡♡♡♡♡♡ Don’t be like me and be undecided and not graduate! I regret it now. It’s hard to make a living on minimum wage. At least teaching is a fair wage.
