It’s also nice to have a tiny corner of the internet that’s entirely my own, a place where I can showcase my work and connect instantly with kindred spirits.If you’re looking to create a site of your own and wondering where to start, today I’m going to walk you through my own thinking and decision-making process, end to end. There are five main steps to making a personal website:Securing Internet Real EstateCreating ContentChoosing an AestheticAdding VisualsLaunching Your SiteI’ll explain each of these steps in detail below.1. Securing Internet Real EstateThe first step to building any website is to purchase a domain name. This is relatively easy for personal websites, as your classic options would be the standard “firstnamelastname.com”.Check out Godaddy, Namecheap, or any of the other top domain hosting sites to see if your domain name is available for purchase. Usually you can secure a domain name for a couple of bucks per month.If you’ve got a more common name or if your domain of choice is already taken, consider it a forcing function to be more creative with brainstorming. Play with your initials, the ordering of your name, even adding a word or two before or after your name.Looking back I might have wanted yz.com — if I were feeling particularly minimalist that day — or yehong.zhu if I was really feeling creative. But whatever domain name you end up getting should really speak to you, because you’ll ultimately be linking everyone back to it.One bonus consideration is that after you decide your domain name, you can set up a custom email with your domain—i.e. “info[at]firstnamelastname[dot]com.” I’ve used G suite for this in the past, which costs $6 - $12 per month. This is of course optional, but a personal email domain can be a nice touch.2. Creating ContentFiguring out what content to put on your site is hands-down the hardest part of designing a website. Generic Wordpress templates cannot replace a thoughtful approach here. It will be obvious to the end user if your site is custom-made or not.I had to really understand what I wanted to include and showcase, which took a significant amount of thinking and planning, down to the number of tabs to include and what information each should contain. Below is an example of some early ideas I had thrown around.As you can see, it took some organization to actually figure out what I wanted to prioritize. Writing down my thoughts helped, but like a branching tree, each “tab name” that I’d listed above opened up a brand new set of questions about what to display.Check out an early rendition of the links I was considering for the “Resources” tab alone—a reference tab that I wanted to have online for my own sake as much as anyone else’s:Not only did I have to figure out how to pare this list down to something more manageable, but I also had to prioritize by category and render the links cleanly, so that they would display well on both desktop and mobile web.Similarly, for my “Writing” section, I had to figure out how to organize my writing, how to title each sub-header, how to display the articles to the user and how to order the display. To find my bylines, I dug deep into the various online archives of publications I’ve written for in the past, then winnowed them down to the best articles I wanted to include on my site.In addition to my writing, I also wanted a place to showcase my personal photography. So I looked through some old folders on my computer (the massive ones, with multiple gigs of data) to find photos I’d taken that I thought were high-quality, unique, and well-edited.Most of these were from my various trips abroad, and many were pulled from photographs I’d already culled on my Unsplash page. Ultimately I wanted a full-bleed gallery view for this sample of my photography portfolio, so later down the line I looked for a site format that could support that.Finally, I knew that I wanted to have both an “About” page with a short biography, and a “CV” page for potential future employers to check out my previous work experiences. Rather than re-summarizing my LinkedIn profile (like so many personal websites seem to do), I wrote and designed both in a playful way to tell my story with a sense of humor.3. Choosing an AestheticNowadays, there are so many templates floating around that you can create a gorgeous site without writing a single line of code. This means that making a personal website is often more of a design challenge than a technical one.Personally, I wanted a visually arresting site — one that could be tastefully minimalist while still conveying enough of my personality to leave an impression. As a result, I thought carefully about the design choices at stake.After debating the merits of module tabs versus infinite scroll, I realized I wanted tabs to distinctly separate each page and link back to specific pages, rather than a single easy to scroll through, but never-ending page. So I went searching for the perfect template for my imagined visual outcome.Having worked with Squarespace, Wix, and Wordpress before, I was familiar with the ins and outs of each platform. In a nutshell:Wordpress provides plenty of optionality; it’s cheaper on average, but premium templates will still cost you a pretty penny. It’s also easier to use and more customizable if you want to code a little bit.Wix is extremely customizable, especially for nontechnical users. You can more or less drag and drop elements where you want them to go. But the design schemes often felt less-than-clean, and there were too many changeable elements for it to be an easy task to assemble a site.Squarespace is like a walled garden — every template has a premium feel. It promises a strict aesthetic once you fill in the blanks, but the tradeoff is that it’s not very customizable after you select a template.Since creating my site a few years ago, webflow.com has also become really hot, though it takes a little more time to customize and has a higher learning curve in the beginning. But give it a try if you’re down to learn new things.Optimizing for a more premium-looking site, I combed through 84 Squarespace templates, ranking my favorites in a shortlist. Having to visualize what my site would look like from these templates was often difficult, as I saw potential with each one that I liked.After several agonizing rounds of elimination, I finally settled on a faux-restaurant template called “Trémont.”I chose this template over the others for three reasons:It had a full-bleed cover page.It had a full-bleed scroll-through photo gallery.It had simple tablature and simple iconography.Now that I had chosen my aesthetic, it was time to provide the visuals.4. Adding VisualsBecause Squarespace templates are usually very heavy on visuals, I knew that I needed a panoply of DSLR pictures on hand to populate my site. The landing photo would be the most critical, as it would catch the eye and cement the user’s first impression.Fortunately, I had prepared a bit in advance.A few summers ago, a photographer friend shot this photo of me in Manhattan. The sun was setting just as we wandered errantly through some train station, bathing everything in a dusty gold. I liked it because of the framing, and because of the negative space. It didn’t need a lot of elements to speak volumes, and left room for words and icons to be superimposed on top.With the landing page set, I thought about other pages I would need graphics for — especially for the pages related to my writing, CV, and resource recommendations. Not having a ton of premium flat lays on hand, I turned once again to Unsplash, my favorite free stock image site.The flat lays displayed in the search results were eye-catching and would make for high quality header images. I picked a couple of photographs for the headers of the tabs and standardized the visual layout for the various links.The other aspect of my site that needed visuals, I realized, was the writing section. The “minimalist” approach would have been to showcase a list of hyperlinked titles—but where was the fun in that? I looked for different page layouts to display my articles and finally found one that rendered both the image and the caption alongside the title.There was no option on Squarespace to display the thumbnails from the meta-data of the article links, the way Facebook does automatically with content posted to their platform. So I manually added the elements, titles, subtitles, pictures, links, captions, and formatting for each of the 40+ stories I wanted to display on my site. Tedious work, but a nice effect in the end.Now that the major elements of the site’s content, aesthetic, and visuals were in place, the heavy lifting was done. Putting the pieces together required a perfectionist’s eye, but was a relatively straightforward task to complete.To amuse myself, I’ve also hidden two easter egg links on my site. They’re fairly subtle because they don’t necessarily look clickable, but you can probably find them if you’re observant. (Message me if you think you’ve found them and I’ll tell you if you’re right!)5. Launching Your SiteBefore you go live, make sure to double check the little things—like the names for your URL slugs, the page and navigation titles, the page descriptions, and the social image previews.Also make sure that your social icons are correctly linked, that you’ve got comments enabled (or disabled!), and that you’ve got site analytics set up in the backend so you can see if people are visiting your site—and if so, how they’re finding you.Once you’ve finished your personal website, congratulations!Time to post it everywhere — social media bios, blog posts, business cards, resumés, ad infinitum. Over time it should become one of the most top links to your name, thanks to Google’s handy dandy ranking algorithm, which indexes exact keyword searches and maps it onto the most relevant domain names.Voilà!
