Absolutely 100% fucking yes.These political billboards are nothing but a public nuisance, waste of taxpayers’ money, ugly blots on the city landscape, and a giant open display of dick-stroking by political parties and aspirants alike.Most of the billboards fall into the following categories:Political campaignsWishing the public on a religious or public holidayWishing a particular candidate or political leader a happy birthday or congratulating them for the win (ass-kissing)A proclamation of something a public servant has achievedThe first one is permissible (not desirable though) but the banners and billboards should be taken down before voting and the responsibility of the same should lie with the one who put it up in the first place.The second one should be done on social media.The third one should be done in fucking private.The fourth should not be done at all. That is the precise reason you were elected, you fucking dimwit.People are so fed up of such utterly disgraceful displays of public sycophancy that it brought out the sarcasm and wit in the residents of Mumbai a couple of years back.[1]A group of residents in Mumbai's Kalyan got fed up too, and what they have done is an inspiration for the entire country. These people put up a hoarding at Netivali chowk wishing a happy birthday to a dog.But not everything is jovial.Recently a young girl was killed when a hoarding fell on her while she was driving. Yep. Killed.[2]Subhasri was killed in an accident in Chennai on Thursday. The accident took place after an illegal hoarding fell on the 23-year-old while she was riding her two-wheeler.Subhasri lost control of and fell on the road. Moments later, she was run over by a water tanker.Imagine the plight of this nation that people are being killed because of falling banners. That poor girl had her entire life and a fledgling career in front of her and it was undone due to the apathy and utter incompetence of our elected “leaders”.This also has a financial cost associated with it.Almost two-thirds of the total costs incurred by political parties during elections goes into publicity.[3]Considering that the same would be split between print, digital, social media, and physical, let’s assume that only 10% of it was on printed banners and billboards. That would be ~6% of the total.However, the total spend by all political parties in India in 2019 General Elections was a staggering INR 60,000 crore.[4] That would imply INR 3,600 crore spent on such worthless banners. And that is not the end of it since such banners keep cropping up after the elections.The urban landscape is already getting cluttered and suffocating. Instead of spending money on infrastructure development, or on beautification, we have idiots in elected offices pulling such mind-boggling gimmicks.There is an urgent need to curtail political banners and hoardings.
