What many people don’t realize about Logan Paul:There was a time - years back - when Logan wasn’t controversial at all. If there were approval ratings for YouTubers just as we have them for Politicians - his was likely over 90%.People lovvvved Logan Paul. I thought his videos were hysterical. His Vine videos circulated all of my friend groups.But then this…..thing….happened…..When you have a large following on social media you feel this pressure to perform, to provide good content for everyone. You feel compelled to “keep the momentum” going.But keeping the momentum going doesn’t always coincide with quality content. Sometimes, because of your large following, it’s just a matter of pushing the content out there. Pushing x-number of videos per week. The Feed algorithm rewards that in viewership numbers, and in turn financial rewards.Logan knows this. Every YouTuber knows this. Content content content.But this is a dangerous game. And where Logan begins to go down this treacherous path, a bit blindly:Rather than 200 takes for a single 6-second video (which Logan did - smithing his content to perfection), he now seems to wing it once or twice and post these meandering 10–20-minute videos.Also - he is no longer this oblivious, innocent, bumbling, likeable fratboyish Viner, who is filming from his dorm room or his parent's house in his old bedroom with dirty laundry in the back corner of his room. Probably still asking his mom for money to go to the store.He’s standing on Lambos shouting at pedestrians. Flexing his cash. Wearing Gold Chains and dressing like a peacock, parading around like an arrogant rap star.We get that he is playing a character.But it is a perfect example of what happens when you lean too heavily on your brand elements and claw your way for relevance in Instafamous culture. The novel ideas are diminished. Occasionally, your over-the-top unmoderated style transcends into some unfortunate manifestations of idiocy that still haunt Logan.To churn out video after video in the lane of ridiculousness without proper thought is to swim in treacherous waters.I occasionally wake up in sweats because of Quora.It is usually because of some nightmare that I wrote something stupid that got misinterpreted and sent around the internet and my family started getting calls. “Sean is a Nazi racist misogynist a$$hole!”“Son of Trump Appointee caught writing horrible things about XYZ.”It’s a bit irrational, but the fear is healthy. It keeps me in line.My point - this internet notoriety stuff can all go south, really, really, really fast. The daggers come out quick. I’ve seen it happen to friends. People are just as eager to tear you down as they are to build you up.Yes - I’m more sympathetic to Logan than most. Perhaps, because he looks like he could be my brother. And, in my own microcosmic way, I relate to the magnetizing effect internet-notoriety has on drama.I think Logan would be well advised to practice some caution before pushing submit. And perhaps return to the old Logan. Less quantity. More quality.
