It’s quite common these days for patients to obtain knowledge about their disease in the web. Often, they appear at the doctor’s clinic with their ipads or notes and their conclusions on what their aliment is and how it should be treated and even what kind medicine to be prescribed. Hence, their purpose in seeking consult is to confirm their diagnosis or to prove themselves right. (Its often the latter). When the doctor’s assessment doesnt agree with the patient’s, words are uttered in the clinic with the effect of making the doctor incompetent.I have encountered quite a few of this situation. As a professional, I listen. I let the patient relate his “google” findings. I make him feel smart. But the moment i sense the patient’s lack of trust or confidence in me, i would bring out my referral form and refer him to someone else. For those who listen to me, they get all the medical attention and treatment options i can offer.A few hours of google search seems to be more powerful today that a decade or so of studying and training.EDIT…This scenario is actually a test to the clinician’s professionalism and patience. Perhaps the most common reaction is irritation and a facial expression akin to… “what?!”. But i guess, in this era of open and free internet information, we have to accept that patients are no longer ignorant about their ailment. They just need some clarification and a gentle correction and persuasion whenever they get their information wrong or skewed. Myself, i have to learn. Just like my patients. And who needs patience? Not them….
